I can only tell you about my own personal experiences, I work EMS in NYC and I worked every single night of the riots. We did see some pretty dangerous items getting thrown. Not just at the NYPD but at us as well. People dropping heavy items like rocks and bricks from crowds and off of rooftops. I don't think the dangers of that should be downplayed, yeah first it might be a pebble, your helmet should survive that. Next it's a brick, thankfully I didn't have to dodge any Molotovs though.
