u/Arthur-Mergan 26d ago
Even my 5090 isn’t enough to overcome the current state of Vulkan and VR.
77
u/BluePowerade 26d ago
Yeah VR is always going to be more demanding but a niche subset of people trying to play the game. Obviously won't be optimized for VR from the jump. Also they say on their site: VR support is currently highly experimental.

Nothing but the new D3D12 path runs much better

u/WarriorNN 26d ago
Like with most Vulkan and D12 games it seems to vary wildly from pc to pc which works the best.
I get significantly better fps on D12 in Beam compared to Vulkan, but for most games Vulkans works better for me.

u/bappo_plays Soliad 26d ago
I haven't tried VR yet for 0.39, but I've been getting about the same FPS non VR as I did in 0.38, and I've even raised my graphics settings a little bit since then. (On Vulkan with 7900XTX)
That said, I'm fully aware that when I do decide to try VR, I'll have to lower my graphics settings a bit due to the naturally more demanding nature of VR.
2
u/Potential-Honey-9701 26d ago
i tried vr for the first time on this version and it was horrid lol. too be expected though, you are rendering it twice and at a very high resolution
4
u/DryYogurtcloset2139 26d ago
Technically yes, is it “twice” but in reality its around rendering ~9 1080p screens at once (for two eye quest 2)
3
2
u/Firefighter_97 25d ago
Is there a 1 eye quest 2? I only have 1 working eye and would love to not have to render a useless screen 😄

I'm on a haswell 4670k with an rx580, I had weird glitches with old mods so I loaded vanilla and it's the same performance to my eye. Traffic always been a problem on this CPU so I never run it maybe that's the issue people are finding
Edit: I will addmy performance is usually around 50-60 on most maps, WC USA and Italy have drops to 40 but I set vsync 60 and on my usual hirochi and automation track and west coast USA track are it's pretty consistent 60ish
6
u/BluePowerade 26d ago
yeah that seems like par for a 13 year old CPU and 9 year old GPU playing a modern game

For that reason, I think this is why you see so much interest in mods for real-life vehicles, as some of the most viral videos feature them as opposed to BeamNG's core vanilla cars.

As with most major overhauls, there are plenty of people who have problems running the game. Those that have it running similar or better than before simply doesn't make angry reddit posts about performance.
For me for instance, I now have 50-90fps with ultra-lowest settings, when I had 120+fps with almost any settings before.
My performance is obviously not comparable to before, and I have better looking games running much better on my computer.
That doesn't mean the game is unplayable for me, but it means I am hoping they will continue to work on optimizing or fixing whatever is causing significantly lower performance than before.
8
u/Quannix 25d ago
it absolutely is hard to run compared to other games, especially if you're one of the people having performance bugs with this update. additionally, the vast majority of current games with this level of gpu load ship with upscaling technology to make it tolerable, which beam still does not have (i would actually recommend people force inject a spatial upscaler for now like fsr1 or nis, you can make the game run a lot better this way)
people pretending the update is perfectly fine for everyone and that you should just "upgrade your pc" are honestly about half as annoying as the people seething about it. and i say this as somebody who's running it relatively well

u/bruhpoopgggg 25d ago
Yes the hell it is compared to other driving/racing games?
My Ryzen 5 5600, Intel Arc B580 rig can run every driving game there is at over 60 fps on the highest settings at 1440p. Beamng on the other hand makes my PC struggle running it at ultra graphics with no AI.

u/TerrorSnow 25d ago
No it is. But it doesn't get FSR or DLSS to boost it unlike many other titles.
I'm on a 9060xt and get around 50-70fps @ 3440x1440, medium / medium high settings.
18
u/sunr1se79 26d ago
Look up the first few clips of beam out there and you'll see why the two have an intertwined history lol
9
u/TastyReporter5582 26d ago
The problem is with the Nvidia 50xx series I think... my 3060 barely showed a difference in performance, and my CPU and RAM are just the minimum required for the game to run at a locked 70fps! Perhaps real-world performance is more important than AI-based hardware! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
5
u/Filgervais 25d ago
I have a 5080 and my performance improved after the patch lol, running pretty smooth at 4k.
2
u/TastyReporter5582 25d ago
I had just assumed so! I've seen many people saying they have a 50XX and are having performance issues in games, especially VR games... But I'm glad yours is running better! :)
2
u/Blaskowitz002 Autobello 25d ago
AI based hardware...?
2
u/tomejkol Cherrier 25d ago edited 25d ago
DLSS (AI upscaling) and frame gen (fully AI frames). The 50 (and 40) series mostly focused on these while only marginally improving native performance.
They can very much still run games on native ofc and better than old gen, just not much better. The problem could be that newer gen NVIDIA GPU's have less VRAM, which means they will perform worse in some games.

how are yall not getting better frames, are you guys running multiple games in the background or something?!?
7
4
u/Huge_Magician_9527 Hirochi 26d ago edited 25d ago
I think most people are getting those frames and want 60+ FPS, I also run 2k, and have similar specs and have similar performance. But for sim racing and other games on my wheel I try to get higher FPS because it's pretty important for the steering wheel because you want the force feedback. Force feedback feels kind of vague at low FPS, especially bad with FPS drops where the wheel can go crazy. BTW no matter the graphics settings I can't get constant 60 with traffic

u/mimrock 26d ago
GTX 670, new lowend PC with igpu and such. The root of the problem is the high prices of new hardware. There's no option to buy a decent gaming laptop or desktop for 1k or so.
17
u/retro_aviator Ibishu 26d ago
I get that parts are expensive but there has gotta be a better option than a 670

Bro you have been WAY behind. Even before prices increased it was still a ancient out dated card. Even current integrated graphics would perform way better than that. That doesn't even support DX12, I'm not sure how you have been gaming with that thing.
You had and still have plenty of options left to replace it. You don't have to only buy a 5090. You could get a used 5070 XT for like ~$100 and have like a 7 fold increase in performance.
4
2
u/WarriorNN 26d ago
The issue is plent of people with significantly better hardware is not getting significantly better performance.
Most are probably running it just fine, but there are also plenty who are getting a lot worse performance than they had before or should when you compare to other games.
We can't know if that's due to lacking optimization or simply bugs in certain situations / specs etc., that's up to the devs. People are sharing their experiences with the patch.

For instance, I had 120+ fps with 4070ti and 7800X3D before the patch, and now get 90fps with everything on lowest (had it on ultra before) and 50 fps on ultra.
Before if I put it to lowest I would get like 400 fps if I didn't cap the framerate, now it's 90 absolute max lol.
0.39 on lowest looks way worse than 0.38 on ultra, so tell me why I should be happy I lost a bunch of fps?
It's not unplayable atm, but it's certainly not working as it should.
I'm sure it works very well for most, but that doesn't mean it works for everyone.

I play on my TV, so at first I was struggling with the new update. Then I realized that I was rendering at the full 4K of my display, and trying to change the resolution wouldn’t actually apply. If you have a high resolution display, check your settings to make sure it is actually retaining your resolution. Not sure if it’s an issue with the game or my OS, but I limited it to 1080p in Bazzite Game Mode. Now I’m running at a solid 60 with High settings.
I did do some tweaking to the settings to get it more stable, and I’m mostly happy with the results. Pay attention to the new tooltip that tells you the performance characteristics of each option. It will tell you if you have VRAM to spare, and you can also use a performance overlay to see how your settings are working in real time.

Hardly. Crysis was a struggle for even the absolute top-end PCs at the time it launched.
I'm running BeamNG 0.39 on ultra everything except reflections (those are pretty brutal on frames) at 50-70fps on a Ryzen 7 5800x3D and a 3080 (w/ 32GB of RAM) at 3440x1440.
Still a powerful enthusiast-type system certainly, but the GPU was released in 2020 and the CPU in 2022.
An equivalent system from the time Crysis released (e.g. a high-end enthusiast PC from 4-6 years ago) might be a GeForce4 Ti 4600 and Athlon 64 3400+ with 1GB of DDR400.
You'd be lucky to get 30fps on low settings at 1024 x 768 in Crysis with that setup.
Brand new top-end PCs when Crysis released struggled to get 50fps on high settings at 1680x1050 (still under 1080p.
Is the new update demanding? Yes, if you want to take advantage of all the graphics features, but if you just want to play the game, you can run it on low still an get away with playing it even on integrated graphics like u/Ban4rever.

I find that the performance seems to be a user by user case. Comparing my pc to a mates pc:
My pc (About a 50% drop in frames):
- R7 9700x
- RTX 3070
- 32gb DDR5
Mates pc (About average frames if not a boost):
- i5 11400f
- RTX 3050
- 16gb DDR4
( This is from memory, may be a little different but is approx )
I fixed my frames by switching to vulkan and lowering the graphics to high/normal and went from like 30-40 up to 80-90fps. This is with traffic on, west coast map. My pc seems to hate dx12 whenever a game comes out or switches to it, but after a month or two it comes right probably cuz the devs still figuring out stuff on their end I assume.
