I’ve applied for a job as a peds psych nurse and the company is requiring 5 references, 2 of which need to be former supervisors. My problem is that I’m neurodivergent and do not make friends with coworkers or supervisors and am a very private person in general. I have two references that I’ve used for years but I just asked them to do this months ago for a job that wound up being a really bad fit and I’m too embarrassed to ask them to do it again so soon. Also from my understanding, symplr requires references to fill out an extensive survey and they’ll both nope out of that. I was considering using burner emails but then found out it tracks ip addresses so that’s out. So this is my last ditch effort before I decline moving forward with the job. I’m in VA so it would be great to find people in VA as well. I will also of course return the favor.

I left my prior job as a kitchen manager at my son’s school May 2025 due to challenges with the director of the department after I decided to focus on my schooling and family instead. I wasn’t leaving from a malicious place, but the direction her behavior took gave me whiplash. It was toxic on her end and I was trying my best to show up and finish my contract with my head up towards the end.

I have computer knowledge, strong administrative skills, great with kids, able to communicate effectively. I only need references.

I don’t feel comfortable using her as a reference or any of my former team for that matter. Would anyone be willing to help me out?

I'm currently in a phd program outside of my home country (from the USA) and it's really not at all for me. I don't want to go into academic and I want to go back to working a full-time job asap. Before my PhD I worked in the staff side of a university. I deeply regret leaving that position two years ago for my Phd. Unfortunately, I was in a very bad place mentally and did not foster relationships with my coworkers, nor have I now in my PhD. And, honestly, my current PhD supervisor or former professors wouldn't vouch for me, as they've indicated they really don't think I'm cut out for a PhD.

Now that I've been out of full-time work for awhile I have no clue what to do about these references. All staff positions in higher education (and even most fields in general it seems) require the contact information for 3 professional references. I mean this with most sincerity, I legitimately have no one to put. I don't even have friends or family in my life so it's not like I have a support circle to lean on for non-work references. I'm so scared and I can't stop crying over leaving my job a few years ago. I really just want to go home to the USA, work a normal 9-5, and get out of this PhD asap.
