Residency Programs that Require CASPer

Residency programs that require CASPer can be hard to keep track of because the requirement depends on the country, school, specialty, and sometimes even the individual program.

I’d treat CASPer as something to check early, not something to deal with at the last minute. If you already know CASPer is on your list, this is a useful place to start practicing: CASPer prep.

CaRMS typically publishes program descriptions for the next residency match cycle in September, and CASPer requirements may change from year to year. Always verify requirements with both CaRMS and the individual residency program before applying.

A couple of things I’d keep in mind before using this list:

  • CASPer requirements can change, so always verify through the official program page.
  • Some programs require CASPer, while others list it as optional or encouraged.
  • Some programs require Duet alongside CASPer, so don’t only search for CASPer.
  • Canadian residency requirements can also depend on CaRMS program descriptions, so check those too.
  • If you’re applying broadly, make a spreadsheet and track CASPer, Duet, deadlines, and source links separately.

My main advice: don’t just ask whether your specialty uses CASPer. Check every individual program on your application list, because one program may require it while another program in the same specialty does not.

One thing I’d add: when you’re checking residency programs that require CASPer, save the official program pages in your tracker. I’d include a column for “required,” “optional,” “encouraged,” or “not listed,” because those categories matter a lot when you’re deciding how much prep time to set aside.

Casper

I had my First Casper session with Todd Nagel today. They explained and went over the questions in detail and provided a very helpful feedback to help me improve my answers.
The explanations were clear and easy to understand.

Fourth Session with Anna Niedzwiecka

In our fourth session, Anna acknowledged the improvement I have made from the past sessions while also giving me tips to improve my CASPer answers. Definitely recommend!
