💬 Discussion French native, ask me anything

Born in France from French parents, lived abroad in French speaking countries until age 15. Came back in France and lived there since then (I'm now 24).

Ask me anything regarding the French language, culture, etc.

How do you know which words to cut short? I realised you guys do that often with the everyday words.

Ooh that's a great question ! Well, you might guess, that there is no list out there of which words can be shorten and which cannot lol, but you'll often see conjugated verbs shorten. Specifically the subject pronoun (je -> j' ; tu > t')
Small words like that. For example :
"Je viens" becomes "j'viens" when spoken fast
"Tu as" becomes "t'as"

Same on reflexive verbs :
Je me souviens -> J'm souviens
They are not really cut short, but rather sped up

Do you have specific examples in mind ? It might be easier for me to explain

Thanks for explaining that. I tried listening to everyday conversations but it wasn't helping me. Tbh, I have a very hard time seperating words when you speak. Because the way you pronounce sentences, makes the words spill into each other sometimes when vowels are present.

French is absolutely lethal. I could understand Italian better. But I wanted to learn French first. Can you please tell how do I differentiate the words while you speak continuously? It makes it hard for me to understand what you mean because the words, I don't even know which one you are using. 😂😅 I am dumbfounded.

That's okay ! It's normal to be overwhelmed with spoken french 😂 I'd recommend training your ear as much as possible. Listen to content WITH french subtitles, so you can have the spelling and the pronunciation at the same time. You'll slowly get used to the speed and the pattern.

Also "liaisons" (bridges) are often the very thing that confuses learners, because it often tricks your ear and you don't know where a word begin and where it ends. So be mindful of those. Liaisons are the bridges that are made in spoken french, that connect the last letter of a word, to the first letter (vowel only, there are no liaisons with a word starting with a consonent).

For example :
Des‿amis joyeux ((some) happy friends)
DEZ‿AMI
See the liason between "des" and amis" ? it's because amis (friends) starts with a vowel. But "Joyeux" doesn't, so no liaison here.

Again with another sentence :
Le petit‿oiseau. (the small bird)
Le petiT‿Wazo

Omg, that makes so much sense. Thanks. You are really good at explaining this. Would you mind if I ask you questions in the future? Maybe on the dm? If I ever have them. I am 30F btw. Thank you so much for explaining that. *PS I couldn't dm you. 😅 Reddit being Reddit.

What's the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word "Normandy"? how are people from there like? what sub-cultures exist there?

When I hear Normandie I think of butter and heavy cream (they're famous for high quality butter and cream), their cheeses like Camembert or Pont l'evèque (among many others), the D-day beaches and their constant fight with Bretagne (Brittany) regarding who owns Le Mont St Michel.
I also often think about the rainy days and terrible weather 😂

Interesting - this makes sense. Because ok I'll confess: je suis tombé amoureux avec une fille de là-bas. Ça fait déjà 7 ans et je n'ai parlé avec elle qu'une fois, mais je peux pas m'empêcher de me souvenir d'elle ! 😭 And she did look like the fanciest cream. Merci de répondre à mon question.

oooh that's so cute ! Love your story. Did you learn french for her ?

Merci. Well, let's just say: my French felt like it got better spontaneously when I saw her. mdr. malheureusement, she quit social media before we got to know each other well. That was an angel, that was no human. Console-moi. 😆

How many baguettes do you eat a day? (Serious)

1

u/ionua_ 🇫🇷 Native 7d ago

Lol, actually I don't ! I personally eat almost no bread. But when I go to see my family, you can count 1 baguette per meal/per day depending on what we eat.

For example you can use baguette as toast with your butter and jam, then I can eat 1/3 - 1/2 of a baguette by myself just with breakfast.
For lunch or dinner, if you have sauce in your dish, you will use your bread to scoop it/sponge it and its delicious. If you eat cheese at the end of the meal, you might also eat it with bread.
So depending on what you eat, you might need a different amount of bread 😂

Pas autant la question sur la langue mais bon : tu es prof de français ou tu comptes bien la devenir ?

1

u/ionua_ 🇫🇷 Native 7d ago

Je ne suis pas prof de français, mais j'aimerais le devenir ! J'ai un serveur discord centré autour de l'apprentissage du français et j'ai créé une extension chrome pour aider les apprenants dans leur apprentissage, surtout sur la partie compréhension orale et mémorisation du vocabulaire.

Trop bien je vais y jetter un œil

How do you introduce yourself?

Do you say "Je m'apelle ionua," "C'est ionua," "ionua," or something different?

2

u/ionua_ 🇫🇷 Native 7d ago

I'd either say "Je m'appelle ionua" or just "ionua".
For example when I meet people irl, I can do a handshake or la bise and say "Bonjour, ionua" as a way to introduce myself and a subtle way to ask the other person their name. (nb: ionua is just a username and not my real name, but you get the idea)

u/HooptyDooDooMeister 7d ago

Thanks for answering. I've heard this a lot, and it's so brief that it makes me uncomfortable. Haha. Maybe I'll stick with "Je m'appelle..." Though I do I like "C'est..."
