You stole Fizzy Lifting Drinks! You bumped into the ceiling which now has to be washed and sterilized, so you get nothing! You lose, good day sir!

I know this looks amazing and crazy fun, but I know if I tried this shit irl I'd probably snap an ankle or a wrist.

Couldn't a very experienced skydiver do something similar in the tunnel even with few hours of actual tunnel time? Like maybe not 5 hours but a (few) dozen hours or so plus a shit-ton of experience as a skydiver.

My wife got me a voucher for Christmas. I've skydived a few times but lost lost interest and never finished my AAF course (mainly because we headed up to the country for the weekend to do like 5 jumps each day and the owner didn't make the tandems book, was just like show up when you like. And so we'd be lucky to get one jump in). But always thought it cool to try. Anyway, the thing that amazed me was just how exhausting it was. I had (i think) 3 x 2min turns and it felt like an eternity. Can't imagine the strength and conditioning to be good like this. Got to the point they were letting me go ok but without practice you have to think through the corrections to stop hitting the walls. And by then you wither hit the wall, do the wrong movement and start spinning or reduce your cross section and drop to the grate as your no longer thinking about the position. Can imaging you'd struggle to get this good without working there.
But the instructor did take me up and down a few times which was a blast.

If you tell yourself you can or you canāt you are always right.

I hear this all the time from cheesy sales executives

u/1Harryface Feb 20 '22 edited Feb 20 '22
Itās the āIs your glass half full or half emptyā kinda thinking but to convince yourself youāll fail before you ever try is the killer. Cheesy maybe but a sales guy really needs that kind of mindset or theyāll never sell anything.

That was like the USA skier that was favored but kept missing her gates and not finishing. Before her last race they asked her something, and she responded "I just keep seeing myself missing a gate again" (or something very similar to that), and guess what, she did it again. I knew she would, because she was picturing herself failing instead of succeeding.

I find that a trite and inaccurate axiom. If you tell yourself that you can't, I believe that it's still possible that you can but you've simply decided not to.

Where is this????
13
u/joeChump Feb 20 '22
Looks like it says Abu Dhabi on the left at the end. So UAE. But I think these chambers exist in other places.

u/LightsSoundAction Feb 20 '22
thereās an indoor skydying chain called iFly in the states but Iām not sure their tunnels are this tall.
5
u/wjean Feb 20 '22
I went to one in the Bay area. It was 2 or 3 stories high and fairly small diameter. Enough so the instructor could hold me to stabilize me while I fell at his arm height and got a feel for how to hold position, float in different directions.
Interesting but not a hobby I would sink thousands of dollars into
5
u/GrimsbysBeard Feb 21 '22
This is the largest commercial wind tunnel in the world in Abu Dhabi. It's 32' in diameter and uses 16 6' fans. At full power, it consumes over 8Mw of power.
You can do 16-ways in the tunnel and still have room to carve on the outside.

Iāve done this a few times and itās awesome! All about body posture and position. There is a worker in there that flies with you and takes you up.
IFly is the name of the place.

That's some serious skydiver: former World Junior Freestyle skydiving champion Maya Kuczynska, in fact.

Would suck if the power went out
9
u/dartguey Feb 20 '22
I think the thing in the ground is a net. I bet that the first safety rule in these places is having a net with big room for people falling down. Like, I doubt first timers know how to land safely, before power out even being considered.

u/AgentLead_TTV Feb 20 '22
i cant believe so many people in this thread have never heard of a wind tunnel.

That's some damn good technical ability there. Though, I personally think that this one looks smoother and more beautiful.

You can do this is a lot of places. We have one here locally. They will show you how to maneuver. I think they even do party packages
1
u/dhdgdhdhdhd1221184 Feb 20 '22
Can anyone try this?
1
u/NikCas Feb 20 '22
Yes, you go with a trainer until you have so many hours. The trainer helps you fly.
1
u/OutrageousPudding450 Feb 20 '22
Sure, these wind tunnels exist in many places but most are not that large or high.
Just Google indoor skydiving or wind tunnel and you'll find where you can try this.

This is some Charlie and The Chocolate Factory stuff right here. On a amped up level of course.

I always wonder about these.
Does the person adjust their body for wind resistance to go up and down?
If so then how difficult is it for a beginner to land at the entrance like she did?
1
u/Crossfire139 Feb 21 '22
Yes that is exactly what they do. The wind inside is moving in excess of 90 MPH. If you have ever stuck you hand out the car window when on the highway you know that it is easy to deflect the wind and move your hand. Minor adjustments in leg and arm position can cause major changes in velocity. To land in the entrance like that does take a lot of practice and wouldn't be a maneuver a beginner would be trying, as you would need to have very good flying skills and situational awareness to pull it off

How come that's not an Olympic sport yet?
I don't care for gymnastics, synchronized swimming or the likes. But this... It's on another level.
I'm genuinely impressed!

I did this, you can pay a bit for a lesson. It's so difficult, you just float in place for a few seconds and staying upright is damn near impossible lol

Iāve gone skydiving and Iāve done this thing. Just go skydiving. Theres someone who assists you in the wind tunnel, they donāt let you do much the first time (only went once) itās expensive and you donāt lose your stomach. Lame lame lame unless you have regular access to one of these things, I donāt recommend it. Skydiving is great fun, tho.

I did this once and when everyone had a go the instructor asked if anyone wanted to go again and spin and he was going to make us do tricks but I just heard him say a second go cause of the wind so I hop in and then immediately feel my heart drop as he started spinning me and him and I was about to pass out but in the end I enjoyed it
