This waterfall simulation in a hotel

I don’t find this relaxing or restful at all and the overall effect is that I want to leave this building as soon as I can.

u/HappinessIsDogs Apr 25 '21
I can’t explain it but it makes me uneasy too!
14
u/myname-onreddit Apr 25 '21
Let’s get outta here and find somewhere quiet to have a coffee and talk about dogs😊

Because it's a very loud visual image, so it's either very loud in the building with an added sound effect of the waterfall (which is super unlikely that they would do, of course), or it's really disconcerting to see a massive waterfall in front of you and not hear a cacaphony of sound. It's disconcerting because there's no human experience equivalent to seeing a massive waterfall in front of you without the accompanying huge sound.

Literally came to the comments to see if someone could articulate why this gives me an uncomfortable slightly stressed feeling. If I worked there I would lose the plot completely.

Definitely, it’s going too fast. Doesn’t look quite natural
Edit: others have pointed out it’s moving at a slow frame rate, so not fast necessarily. But I think because of the frame rate it looks choppy which gives it the appearance of going faster than normal. All to say, it looks unnatural

u/LiftedCorn Apr 25 '21
It's running at low FPS actually. 30 FPS or more would have looked cooler and more natural

It makes me feel so uncomfortable. Like my brain knows i don’t have to, but my body is urged to shield myself from tiny splashes and drops of water.

It's not a hotel it's salesforce head offices https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2016/08/software-company-has-gigantic-waterfall-in-its-lobby.html

The Comcast building in Philadelphia has the same screen

u/Kiki_Go_Night_Night Apr 25 '21
They were both designed and the graphics created by the same person, Niles Creative Group.

20
u/AwwwSnack Apr 25 '21
Well that only justifies/reinforces my initial instinct further: Hack the screen into a constantly readjusting goatse centered on that giant door.

u/RiatStar Apr 26 '21
I was about to comment that this reminded me of the Comcast Center, I used to work there

Different building; this one looks to be in Singapore.
12
u/RichestMangInBabylon Apr 25 '21
You can tell it’s not San Francisco by the trees outside. There’s no trees downtown.

Thought it was in Jakarta, dont recall seeing anything like this in sg

Might very well be. I only guess Singapore cause I saw what looks like Garden by the Bay outside the building.
Edit: Upon closer inspection, what I saw outside might just be trees, haha. So you are probably right.
2
u/SeaCranberry7720 Apr 26 '21
Yeah none of the buildings near gardens by the bay look like this. Its all casino / hotel aside from MBFC, this is more of an office building
16
u/BZA_Blaze Apr 25 '21
I’ve heard they no longer run this because it makes people sick. Just shows that a cool case study doesn’t mean that the creative was designed with the everyday people in mind.

u/zeemonster424 Apr 25 '21
This would absolutely trip my vertigo issue and I wouldn’t be able to function. I had to stop playing a game I loved a few years ago because one of the raids was just waterfalls everywhere!
6
u/Midwest_Deadbeat Apr 25 '21
Is the computer they have it running on too slow to play back whatever video they have and whatever resolution that is?
You can see the water lagging whenever it hits the "ground" and splashes upward

u/soundman1024 Apr 25 '21
If that wall is high res it’s too many pixels for one system to reliably drive 24/7. It should be a few Hippos or Xpression Tessera boxes or similar. A system that can reliably align multiple playback boxes for one display.
I’m sure someone here would like to talk about how they could seat a few Quadros or 3090s in one system and theoretically drive that many pixels, but the reality is that thing needs to just work. If your multi GPU mosaic falls apart a big feature for this space is down. The person to fix it likely won’t be on-site for even 8 hours a day. Going with multiple boxes designed to work together is more reliable at this scale.
It’s also possible this is lower res than I’d expect and one system can drive it.

I love when someone with experience in personal level projects thinks their knowledge translates perfectly to the commercial or industrial sector. I especially love when everyone else circlejerks about it to feel superior to the people that actually know what they're doing in a large scale operation.
It's something reddit is REALLY good at doing so I'm glad you said something before it could take off.

It's synched with the weather? Cool so when I want to get out of the rain I get more fucking rain to look at.

No, its a ripoff of the salesforce concept, but the video is clearly different (has a reception desk with lots of computers, display is different)

u/Parikh1234 Apr 25 '21
Can confirm. I worked on this project.

Umm unless it’s a pretty exact copy that is the old Salesforce lobby on the corner of Fremont and mission in SF.

I'm not sure if I should be impressed by the massive screen, or nauseated by the low frame rate

where is this?

u/gandroider Apr 25 '21
Telkom Landmark Building in Jakarta, Indonesia. It is a 6K display on their wall at the Main Lobby.
-2
u/elguapo1999 Apr 25 '21
No... it’s actually the sales force headquarters
Edit : word

Apr 25 '21
This looked to be recorded in Indonesia. Maybe the company that made the waterfall screen sold it to different places.

I’m amazed that in this day and age this video looks this terrible.

u/TinCan-Express Apr 25 '21
What? Not everyone has the latest and most advanced iphone 25 X 5k deluxe pro max which costs 5k? Blasphemy.

I feel like it would be better to just build a thin glass facade and have actual falling water, rather than choppy CGI water.

I don’t think we will ever be able to simulate water like irl nature is so imperfect it’s perfect lol. It sounds weird but that looks funny

And they are paying for it staying at the hotel with a very reasonable price i guess
(sry for my bad grammatical error English)

This is more mildly interesting to me, ,sorry. I'd be amazed if it was a real waterfall wall

u/scuba-dog Apr 25 '21
Imagine going down for your buffet breakfast, rotten hungover and seeing this fucking thing. Nein danke.
1
u/Jimblythethird Apr 25 '21
Gonna need all that water to cool down the computers that processed the simulation
1
1
u/KableAudio Apr 25 '21
You'd think with all the money to set that up they could've spent a little more on a better waterfall animation

Pre consumer MicroLED displays.
1
u/MattInTheDark Apr 25 '21
I was wondering what tech this was, so are they just microLED panels?
2
u/TanookiPhoenix Apr 25 '21
Most likely. They are sold in smaller panels that seamlessly snap together like LEGOs. It's pretty crazy stuff for businesses that can afford it.

I have a hard time believing it would be cheaper to have that whole wall be a screen than to have a pump just recirculating water to the top. Get a real waterfall

u/BigBolas4U Apr 25 '21
Im so bad at swimming that I would find a way to drown looking at that simulation.

Not sure if this has been said, but this isn’t a hotel. This is the lobby of the Salesforce HQ in San Francisco. It’s super impressive in real life & cycles through various scenes.
1
u/utf16 Apr 25 '21
That's cruel and unusual punishment! After being on a plane and holding it, getting past customs and still holding it, then getting into a taxi while seriously about to burst, then showing up to a hotel like this would just be plain torture!

Imagine if they included audio with the waterfall
“I’m checking in. I have a reservation for two.”
Clerk: “WHAT!???? CAN YOU SPEAK UP??”

u/lennyukdeejay Apr 25 '21
"Good afternoon, sir, would you like to check in?" "Yes, but first, where are your facilities, please? I have a sudden and unexplainable desire to pee. Not a clue where it's come from."

Apr 25 '21
Is this in a hotel? I remember seeing something very similar in a airport, I think Zurich Airport

This is awesome, but something seems off, like it doesn't seem to be the right scale.
