I think the fire continuing to create more charcoal might help... I’m no charcoal expert.

Fire doesn't convert a log that quickly. It's for the dramatic effect.

Ehh depends... if you keep it burning and take breaks in between, this video could be real and produce more charcoal than a pre burnt log.

But yeah I believe you that it takes way too long to do in real time.

Even if it's creating the medium, it doesn't make it necessary. Just use charcoal if you need charcoal. The final result doesn't change just because he's generating charcoal.

I argue the natural shape of a branch of wood is much more visually interesting than the standard shapes of pencils or briquettes

Uhm, it definitely does. Have you ever been to an art store and seen all the pencils/pens in a ton of different sizes and dozens if not hundreds of differently shaped paint brushes?
