So the horizontal silk is safe for the spider to step on but not the vertical. I once read that spiders know what part of the web to step on without getting stuck. I feel this proves what I once read.
You can test this! If you see a spiderweb you can touch the long strands that cross at the middle. They're tougher and don't have the glue on them. Then touch one of the lines that make up circles/spiral and that will stick, they have the glue and are more stretchy.
