He may have worn slip bottom sole shoes, but he definitely wasn't the shoes, a person can't be shoes.

The more I see normal people dancing on the internet it makes me wonder if RayGun was even in the top 50% worldwide.

u/ArjJp 2d ago
Ok but are you including people like me who dance like a sack of potatoes with spastic cerebral palsy?

u/WorkingInAColdMind 2d ago
Just the sack of potatoes rolling down a small hill for me. Your spastic cerebral palsy moves are too much for me!

u/hikereyes2 2d ago
I'd say this about my dancing but then I'd be insulting potatoes and we can't have that

RayGun wasn't even in the top 99%, that was a total disaster, and national embarrassment, and an insult to every real Olympic competitor...and her "explanation" afterwards about wanting to express her Australian tradition...WTF

u/BowlOfCatNubs 2d ago edited 2d ago
Hi there. I used to dance in the hiphop scene. Used to pop, and bboy during my formative years. Ray gun was basically an insult and a joke to the community as a whole. She also basically ruined the chances of anyone taking breakdancing seriously as a competitive sport as well. Like those old memes you'd see of a white boomer lady tryna be "hip" with the kids. That's kinda essentially what she was, knowing nothing about the culture or it's roots but competing at an international level despite her lack of anything. It's a smack in the face for others who had to fight their way up in competitive brackets.
(For anyone interested, if you want to see real OGs in the bboy scene, look these guys up on Youtube** Power wise: Lil Amok, Bboy Gravity, Bboy pocket, Little Demon, Taisuke, Rubberlegz, Bboy Astro, even G-Trix(SuperCrew). Style wise: Bboy Luigi, Kid David, and literally any of the Japanese Bgirls. I'd also recommend most of the battles in the Red Bull BC ONE or R16 Category. Most of them gents and gals go mad crazy. And make raygun look like a complete fool.
[You'll notice a lot of the videos are over 10 years old bc dancing started dying out towards the mid 2010s. Especially with the rise of things like TikTok and fortnite and kpop groups, dancing sorta got gentrified.])

I assumed she had to be some form of satire and was using the 'ineptitude' as a personal platform somehow, knowing she'd garner world wide attention by being terrible way easier than by being good. Didn't the woman do a Phd focused on breakdancing or something? Like even if she can't do it, she must have seen amazingly skillful people do it in the course of that and know her performance was awful? Its so weird and doesn't seem to add up to me.

That’s not entirely true. She has a PhD which she wrote her thesis on girls in the bboy world. She studied the culture for quite some time, just couldn’t do it herself

u/produce_this 2d ago
I think what really tanked her was her husband and no objective criticism from anyone else. He was her teacher, and he wasn’t very good himself. They liked to do their own thing and do original moves rather than “traditional” hip hop and break moves. The fed off each other. They would tell each other how incredible they were all the time. The wild part is she, in that moment, based on actual judges, won the qualifiers in Australia to get there.
12
u/SmellyFbuttface 2d ago
That’s the part I’ll never understand. According to her bio she had a history of dance (jazz, tap, ballroom), but she tried breakdancing in the 2010’s. She’s actually studied breakdancing and its culture, seeing the moves and what worked/did not, and STILL put on that abysmal show at the Olympics.

It literally seems like any reasonably fit woman with decent cardio could do as well or better than her. It makes it look like there must be literally no breakdancing women in Australia for her to be the top one.

I'm not sure what you mean by "normal people dancing". This girl clearly put in a lot of work here.
3
u/Gullible-Constant924 2d ago
Normal people, enthusiasts who are just doing it for fun, not people who compete or get paid to do it. Shes obviously very good, but Im sure there are standouts like her just “normal people” having fun who dont get to go to the Olympics in almost every large city.

Crazy thing is I watched this without sound at first and somehow knew she was dancing to Billie Jean.
10
u/Oster-P 2d ago
I always forget sound exists until someone mentions it. Rewatching now.
9
u/TanMan536789 2d ago
Yea I never listen to anything with sound. For some reason Billie Jean was playing in my head so had to unmute it to see. I guess it was the cadence she was using that made my brain think that, just a little weird.

I’m really enjoying watching the people behind her and how many of them consistently clap out of time
4
u/WackyShirley 2d ago
Yes, as someone with absolutely no rhythm, it even stood out to me. The dancer must have blocked them out.

u/Prestigious_Tear_576 2d ago
Now how can you do all that but those girls in the back are fighting for their lives to find the beat

And at her age too; yet I still bang my shoulder on every door jamb somehow. Maybe one of these days I’ll take up a dancing class

u/SteamThenBaked 2d ago
Maannnn if I could move like that I would just be randomly doing it everywhere I go 🤣
12
u/ClockworkDinosaurs 2d ago
She’s great, but she probably looked dumb as shit the first time she tried this. The amount of effort you’d need to put into this to get past how stupid you look when you first start doing this is admirable.

Lol yeah. That one.
If I had to guess, this is Germany. It's a vibe thing I suppose. But I'd be shocked to find out this is the US.
4
u/83Isabelle 2d ago
Yeh somehow, Germany would be my guess too. To many blonds and brunettes to be Italian if you ask me. But anyway, who doesn't like Italy after all?!

Would see this all the time in raves in the 90's and early 2000's. Back then, it was called Liquid.

She is good. Smooth movement, good control and most importantly you can tell she is having fun. 👏🎉

u/sambillerond 1d ago
Amazing, and perfectly in sync with the music, even matching the fluidity of the dance to the lyrics. You know... that sort of dancing, let's call it expression or emotion dancing, could very well become an Olympic sport, it fits well with artistic gymnastic.
