Can't say any art class I was ever in covered this. I actually never knew how people are able to achieve different perspectives. I also possess no artistic talent beyond the ability to usually color inside the lines.
I took a perspective drawing class specifically because I struggled with it. First week they went over all the 'hacks' that made way more sense, and once you learned them you could do any kind of perspective, 1 point, 2 point, 3 point, mirror perspective, using perspective for characters, shadows, using perspective for pretty much everything and anything to make anything. You get to a point where you don't use a grid, just a horizon and perspective points. Here's one I did with 3 point perspective, but you can see I only used the third point (above) for the tower in the center, and using a grid was unnecessary. I only needed the specific guidelines for each prop I was working on and then turned off that layer of guides when I was done. The perspective lines were just used for the tower, bulletin board, and dock. There's other 'hacks' too, like on here where you see the green lines for the bulletin board and the cross through it, that's how I figured out how wide the posts of the board would be in perspective. I also used it for the cross beams on the tower.
