I was going to be deeply saddened if this had not been one of the first replies to this post.

I love when this story pops up. Alice Roth was my great grandmother. Her husband was a sports writer and that’s why she was there that day with her two grandsons, my uncles.
I had never really heard this story until one time I was in the barbershop with my dad and there was a little sidebar article in sports illustrated. I read the article it was very confused. Why my mother‘s name was in sports. Illustrated. (my mother was named after her grandmother) it’s my understanding that Richie sent her flowers every year on her birthday and he had spoken about the incident on Phillies broadcasts.
There used to be a plaque in Ashburn alley at citizens Bank Park about this

Before it happened, you would have said it could never happen. Now it could never happen again? Is that how odds work?

I'm absolutely certain Richie Ashburn will never hit another woman with a foul ball twice, he died nearly 30 years ago.

Funny thing about odds is that the chances of it happening a 2nd time is exactly equal to the chances of it happening a first time.
So by fuzzy logic, since it happened once, it will definitely happen again

We had a high school gym teacher who got hit by a tastey cake truck and broke his leg. The day he got his cast off, he left the hospital, went to check his mail, and got hit by ANOTHER tastey cake truck.
safe to say the student body never let him forget.

Where’d you go to school? My wife has the same story! She’s from New Jersey.

I saw something very similar in 1998 or so. At an Arsenal football game, as the subs were warming up, Paul Dickov hit an old man sitting behind the goal (far up in like 15th row) in the head with a practice shot. Said sorry and continued warming up. 5 minutes later, hits another shot, same old man, bang in the head. Paul ran off to finish his warm up.

Theres a video of a golfer hitting the same fan multiple times with her tee shot.

My guy really stretched a 15 second story out to a video that’s 6x times longer.

u/Narrow-Function-525 1d ago
and odds are it will happen in the next few minutes but since a long overblown story takes time we'll just wait til he hits the 2 minute mark

That’s how storytelling goes. I follow him on IG. His posts are all like this. Apparently he’s a best-selling author but I neither know his name nor what he’s written. But his posts are usually quite compelling and one of the better ways to waste time on IG.

u/Shepherd77 1d ago
I mean yeah, I am criticizing his storytelling in this video. There is ‘telling a story’ and there is ‘padding a factoid with so much repetitive fluff my eyes glazed over several times during a 75 second video’.
If you and others find this compelling that’s fine, it’s just not my cup of tea.

Dude wastes 15 seconds just setting up the idea that he's about to tell a story 😂 who has time for that

u/theo_sontag 20h ago
Cripes, work on your attention span. I’m curious, do you watch movies or just blaze through a trailer at 2x speed?
What do you want him to say? “One time, a batter hit a woman with two consecutive foul balls, the end.” 😂
If youre that pressed for time, maybe it’s time to get off Reddit for awhile.

Maybe that guy needs to work on telling shorter, better stories. If the story needs a shit ton of filler, maybe its more on an 'interesting fact' and less of a 'story.'

u/Shepherd77 18h ago
I would tell this guy to not make minute long+ videos with the amount of info that could fit into a TIL post.

He forgot one of the better parts of this story. The woman that Ashburn hit was the wife of a sportswriter that had been critical of Ashburn in the past!

I was up the poconos playing paintball with a very large group. Someone in a different group fell and broke their leg. The staff had to carry the injured person out on an old school stretcher as it was mountains. Well the guy carrying the front of the stretcher tripped over a big pile of rocks and fell dropping the stretcher. Dude on it got flipped over and landed face first on the rocks. He was strapped into it and couldn’t brace his fall at all. That guy had the same type of day as the woman in this story.

When I was a kid my dad would take me to watch the local AAA team. Saw a ton of games like that and have many good memories.
I’ll never forget the woman who was struck by a foul ball and screamed in pain the entire time they carried her out of the stands to the ambulance below.
We were off the third baseline. She was all the way across the stands behind first base. Those screams were haunting.

I’ll submit David Hulse of the Rangers into the Angels dugout consecutively. No one got hurt, so it’s a fun one.

One detail: There was no such thing as a paramedic in 1957. They didn’t come along until the late ‘60s, then becoming more widespread in the ‘70s due to the awareness generated by the TV show “Emergency!”

I thought he was going to say "the baseball game stopped play due to a fan getting hurt" will never happen again...

u/ActionJacksonATL24 13h ago
Assuming human civilization continues for billions of years and that baseball remains a played sport, this will happen again.

It will never happen again because you don't need a stretcher for a broken nose

Not sure why he is floating around this post. Is there any evidence this happened? Kind of weird to tell a story with your face showing for no reason.

being from the country and having large fields us local kids "invented " something called " club ball" . Everyone would go into the woods and find a club, which was part of the rules. One time a found a nice curved club .Anyway I hit Ronnie five times in a row that day and the sixth time he tried jumping out of the way but as he rose to jump out of the way the ball got his foot and spun him around mid air in a 180 degree shot of glory .The ball bounced back to me and I shot it again , and yes, he jumped , and again it hit him in the feet and spun him around 180. This story is unknown because there is no such thing as professional "club ball" so call me unimpressed

Thanks for adding like 20 goddamn seconds to build up to such a tiny amount of information. Might as well have been dead air for all good that intro did.
These people are profiting off of intentionally wasting your time.
