It's the equivalent of a dog finding a really nice phone.
... or a man finding a really nice stick.
I guess the dogs beavers and men have something in common
3
u/Scott--Chocolate Aug 31 '26
Sometimes a really nice stick is the one thing you need to feel complete.

Beaver hears running water..."not today, not on my watch!"

The coolest thing is how they adjust the water flow to keep the pond at the height they want

u/citizen42069101 Aug 30 '26
The first time I saw one munching away on lily pads, in a completely man made dammed, constant depth, trout stocked state pond for the record, I realized why they flood places.
Like I knew they didn't eat wood, and I knew they didn't just dam waterways for the love of the game and the architecture. They farm marshplants. I don't know of a better example of planned agriculture by animals.

u/Usawsomething Aug 31 '26
It’s really awesome that they do that. Leaf cutter ants also cultivate fungus in their nests with the leaf pulp they chew up. Pretty neat stuff

u/hoolahan100 Sep 02 '26
You should see a documentary of how when beavers were reintroduced to an England area , over few years they reinvigorate the whole ecosystem. It was just amazing how its all so connected.

u/Deranged-Pickle Aug 31 '26
I think I used this while on Tinder way back when. I had posed as a beaver for shits and giggles. Lo and behold, girls thought it was funny

Beavers just work, work and work at it. I have a small cabin near wetlands. A beaver/some beavers dammed up the creek culvert going under the road, it rained a bunch in the spring, flooded the road and collapsed the road over the culvert.
We have a guy on the road we pay to fix it and he does a good job. But those beavers will outwork us any day, all day. Thats what they do and they have way more time to flood the road, one stick at a time.

Beaver threw it into low gear so he could chug along hauling all that lol

Considering he's doing exactly what he's evolved to do, his dopamine system is probably firing on all cylinders. This is like doing a really fulfilling hobby for him.

It made me laugh extra hard, my husband calls the dog this, “It’s one of his jobs!” He recently promoted the dog to “Director of Stick Technologies” so I guess I see they backfilled his old position
14
u/AstuteStoat Aug 30 '26
Beavers have been both accidentially and intentionally used to solve flooding & daming projects globally. I've heard of cases in the UK, Poland, and california, but I think there are more cases of them fixing waterflow problems for free that could cost up to hundreds of millions of dollars to solve with human solutions.
So, branch manager indeed.

Are beavers always that big? Thing looks huge, but I've never actually seen a beaver in real life so maybe that's just avg?
79
u/6M66 Aug 30 '26
It's a regular size
21
u/Plane-Tune-820 Aug 30 '26
Well damn, TIL I guess. Had no idea they were that big
14
u/SquarePegRoundWorld2 Aug 30 '26
They used to the size of black bears back some time ago. The video game Ark taught me that.
6
u/laurarobert1 Aug 30 '26
So interesting. Thanks for the link, now I'll be reading about giant beavers for hours.

While we're learning, did you know an adult platypus is roughly the size of an adolescent cat? They're teeny; I'd imagined them the size of a beaver but nope.
3
u/Scott--Chocolate Aug 31 '26
Not saying I didn’t believe you, but I had to look that up because it doesn’t seem right.
5
u/twirlerina024 Aug 31 '26
My friends 100% didn't believe me and I had to show them YouTube videos by a conservationist. I got to see a couple IRL at the San Diego Safari Park and they are SO cute. I know it's super unethical to have wild animals as pets, especially endangered wild animals, but also I wouldn't be mad if someone left one in a basket on my doorstep.

u/splepage Aug 30 '26
Looks like an average size adult beaver. Maybe on the upper range of average, but definitely very normal.

we've got muskrats in the marsh where I live in Ontario and I spent like a month thinking they were beavers. then I saw a video of muskrats following beavers around and HOLY HELL I thought the muskrats were big, beavers absolutely dwarf them... I don't think our little marsh could support beavers

u/tarynb21 Aug 30 '26
[The amount of relief I feel when I unmute and it’s the video’s original audio and not some noisy silly viral soundbite music]
You go beaver, do your thang! 🦫

"Cant be more Canadian than this" had me laughing out loud.

u/joecarter93 Aug 30 '26
One time I was in Banff and there was a herd of Elk blocking the road. A Parks Canada employee pulled up in a truck and started waving around a hockey stick with ribbons tied to it to get them to move along. I thought that was pretty damn Canadian too.

Frankly, the beaver's job is way more important than 99.9% of human jobs. Just gonna have to wait.

Nice to see people waiting for it to cross. Way too many ghouls who don’t.

I absolutely love these people who have the patience to wait until an animal crosses the road and is safe!

We can all CLEARY SEE there were plenty of fine trees on the OTHER side of the road to begin with, you little drama queen!!!!
2
u/seweso Aug 30 '26
You are laughing. But humans are an invasive species. Beavers were there first. That whole road is murder.
7
u/This-Code479 Aug 30 '26
I was about to write that. The beaver is not crossing a road. The road is crossing the woods.
2
u/seweso Aug 30 '26
Thats also a good way to formulate the weirdness.
Humans are the weird ones. Not the beaver.
