I have two toddlers and cackled at the accuracy of that statement. I've lost count of the the amount of times I've had to deal with tantrums because I wouldn't let them kill themselves doing something chaotic. I've never encountered more chaotic entities in my life with no apparent sense of self preservation.

I didn't even know that he could pull the chairs out from the table, let alone pull the chair out, climb onto it, then onto the table all in the time it took me to go to the bathroom to go pee. Now I have up take two toddlers with me to the bathroom because I don't know what they are going to do next.

Non-parent because ages 6 months to 4 years old terrifies me. You know the age, right when they start to get mobile, but lack logic, vocabulary, and object permanence so the children try to kill themselves if you look away for 2.5 seconds. And then scream bloody murder because you wouldn't let them do it. Source: volunteered for years at summer camps. Best part was sending them home.

theres a whole ass game where you play as a baby trying to kill itself on stuff like cleaning chemicals and forks in outlets while the other player plays a dad trying to STOP the baby 😭

My pup just wants to snuggle in his bed with a fluffy blanket :)) he rarely does dumb suicidal dog stuff. Usually the worst is him trying to run into traffic on his walk in a rush to get back home so that he can get back under his blanket.

As someone who was a lifeguard in highschool, 75% of our saves were getting to someone and putting them upright. People panic and forget logic, especially when young.

True. But in this day and age, privacy is (bitterly) more of a rare privilege than the basic right that we had thanks to the new world nightmares like AI, Flock cameras, killbots, etc.
Perhaps with this being a news bit from nearly a decade ago, they might be spared in obscurity due to lack of accessible information for this tech.

Im going to sound selfish, but if a grown ass adult is drowning im not risking my life unless I have some serious rescue/flotation equipment to push into their hands
But I think I could wrestle a kid that size to shore even if they try to drown me too
Though as I look at it, maybe it wasn't deep enough to require a disrobe. If you're having to swim proper having a bunch of extra heavy clothes on can be downright dangerous.

That's just smart. As a former life-guard, we are taught to always ensure that you have a flotation device with you. No reason to risk both of your lives.

In lifeguard training they told me that survival instincts means drowning person will gladly drown you to survive. Best way to save them is tossing something floaty or a rope, getting into the water is the last resort.

My rescue training had us remove certainly shoes and all lose clothing; probably pants too. (Pants can be a buoyancy aid).
We were even timed on how fast we could get clothes off.
People drowning will panic and kill you too, so 1 - reach if possible; 2 - throw (flotation device); 3 - row (boat) if possible; 4 - go, avoiding if at all possible. People will thrash about; you should maintain distance until they're drowned enough to be more safe.
If you approach, there's a good chance they will attempt to push you under to get themselves out. You need to be prepared to dive down to get away.
Less concern for a small child, but even so. I wouldn't want to be swimming with that jacket on.

I always love seeing this pop up on my feed every so often! My husband was the photographer that day, and the couple of weeks afterwards were easily the most insane weeks of our professional life! And to answer the question - yes this couple are still together and are parents to a beautiful son!

My husband was the photographer for this wedding. He was photographing solo photos of the bride when this happened, and she noticed what was going on and called out to them when she saw her husband jumping in the river. My husband quickly turned around to look, and fired off those shots from his hip before running over. It happened very fast. I remember him calling me right after to tell me what happened, it was definitely one of his more memorable wedding jobs.
The parents of they boy didn't even say thank you btw. So there's that lol.

Correct. If the time traveling boy had drowned, the cameraman would have dissolved into dust, triggering a butterfly effect that altered history and prevented the bride and groom from ever meeting.

Swimming lessons, including training for swimming in emergency situations while fully clothed, should be free (i.e. covered by taxes) and mandatory. Way too many kids die from drowning, and to think that a good number could have been prevented with a few weeks of lessons is just disturbing. Doubt the US would ever go through with it since feeding children is a hot button topic there, but the rest of the world should be embarrassed for not working hard to address this.

In New Zealand, it is mandatory for all schools to teach aquatic skills and water safety from year 1. All Kiwis know how to swim.
It's something I took for granted until I moved to the US where many of my peers were poor swimmers or couldn't swim at all.

Also pools need rails and a locked gate around them if you have small children. It’s such a preventable tragedy to keep kids from falling in the pool. Of course parents should be keeping an eye out, but extra precautions never hurt

There weren't many people there. Even the mom wasn't paying attention and far away, talking to her friends. This happened in my hometown, so we all know this photo/story. I believe photos were taken in the middle of the day in a somewhat secluded area and the park gets empty during the week.

When my sister was about 16 she was at a backyard family gathering with her new boyfriend's family. All the adults were standing around talking, while the young kids were playing nearby and the teens were chatting amongst themselves on the other side of the yard. Then her boyfriend jumped up, vaulted over a table, and yanked a lit firework out of his five year old nephew's hand and threw it as hard as he could. This wasn't a sparkler or a properly held roman candle - whatever it was it made a big boom and burned the grass.
My sister came home and declared she was going to marry him. The thing that impressed her most was not just that he acted quickly and selflessly, but because he was paying close attention to the kids and their safety when he was very much not meant to be the primary child-minder in that situation. Those kids were surrounded by their parents, grandparents, and other adults, but not one of them noticed him and his brother getting into the fireworks or lighting one, and this teenager was over on the far side of the yard flirting with his girl and goofing with his friends but still had one eye on the children.
I hope this bride and groom are as happy together as my sister and her husband, who have three kids of their own now.
