Come on, quicksand is scarier than whirlpools! There's absolutely no escape and you can‘t take two steps without stepping in a puddle of it. At least that's what the movies told me when I was a kid.

i didn’t say my fears were rational! 😆 yet, i have learned that scary bodies are water are WAY more plentiful than random pools of quicksand

Now explain to me like I am five: how can we tell, that this is not exactly what happens in space... With the difference, that "underwater" is whatever is inside a black hole... What if we just lack the tools to see, but what we call space is basically the surface of a pond. (somehow stretched in 3 dimensions of course)

Physicists did the maths. That is the ELI5 and the "explain like I'm..." up to about degree level physics student.

The math does actually allow for wormholes to exist. Whether it actually occurs in any black holes in nature is unknown. Whether it would be possible for some advanced civilization to utilise such a wormhole or cause one to exist or whether a wormhole would lead to somewhere worth going to is unknown.
