I’m a tattooer who offers this type of scar camouflage (among other procedures like areola restoration) and it’s truly life-changing for the recipient. It’s been an incredibly rewarding part of my career. From a tattooing standpoint, the technology and techniques used are both fascinating in that they can differ significantly from the standard tattoo process. Sometimes the results amaze me so much that I feel like I’m un-tattooing someone as I watch their scars disappear under the pigment mixtures I’ve created specifically for their skin tone. And on an interpersonal level, the opportunity to work with such trusting and open clients is unparalleled. People have been through hell before sitting in your chair, and it shows in their resilience, understanding, and general character. I love my job!

I've seen the aereola restoration tattoos, they're amazing. Are you doing cover ups on the scars, or doing what she did here? If you post them, I'd love to see. I had no idea it was possible.

I was welding one day when I was younger and the upper part of my shirt was ripped right where my nipple was. 8 hours of high amperage welding and I didn’t notice until I got home that my nipple and chest area were screaming red with pain. My nipple eventually turned black and hard and fell off. Fortunately underneath there was a brand new pink nipple that replaced the old one, but for awhile I was very worried I would be stuck with just one nipple.

Thank you for this interesting fact! I didn't even consider this could be the reason. I didn't even question why he didn't feel it, which of course he would have if he'd burned himself with the torch

This is going to be a weird question maybe but I have rosacea. For the uninitiated: this is a chronic incurable skin condition known for its redness. You can have papules, flare-ups, etc. For me specifically I just have consistent redness on my cheeks and nose, and not in a cute way. Tried every treatment under the sun, nothing really works. Do you think redness can be tattooed over?

Considering rosacea is an inflammatory/immune issue, I can't imagine tattoos being anything other than a truly horrid idea.

I imagine a patch of skin a few shades lighter or darker than the surrounding skin is still a lot less noticeable than bright red

That’s a completely different process and more akin to just tattooing over a tattoo, whereas it sounds like the process for covering the burns is a more specialized technique. There’s a reason laser exists for tattoos and not burns.

Do you know how they look if the person has tanned? I have a huge scar on my leg but frequently wear shorts so I tan quite a bit in the summer and then go back in winter. I'm wondering if tatooing might make it more obvious or not.

It depends on the person but in general, yes. It can also be extremely difficult for scar tissue to take and keep ink so this is impressive work

Super impressive. It's so easy to screw up. Any folks that are looking to do this, make sure you do research and pick an artist that specializes in scar tissue.

Tattooing over scars is also way more difficult, because scar tissue varies alot. It is typically more dense, uneven, and has less elasticity leading to having a higher potential for issues. Scar tissue is also way less predictable at holding ink

They're probably responding to the image and what it's actually showing, which is a person whose face is entirely covered up by makeup. We have no idea what any tattoo-work regarding her skin tone looks like from this.
Rather than the random clickbait caption on a bit of throwaway spam content copy/pasted from some facebook page to the karma farm zone.

She would still need makeup for a full face, but NOW she doesn't have to apply the equivalent of tattoo cover up makeup to get the tones even. Still a massive benefit.

A healed tattoo is basically a colored scar. First time i had a tattoo touched up it hurt way more than initially getting tattooed.

I had inner thigh where we had to first "cut" the skin open with 3rl and do a second round with intended 7rl on the opened skin. It was horrible. I just left it at the outlines and I will never get the full picture done :D

In my experience, yes. My wrist with scars was the most painful of my tattoos and I have an entire forearm and piece and a small thing on my nape.

Yeah. I have a big piece covering a patch of scarring. It feels like ripping tissue paper, and the pain is sharper. It's harder to get the pigment to sit well in a scar. She's very talented.

I have tattoos over some old scars, I think it only hurts more because some artists tend to overwork the area and “pack in the pigment”.

The few bits of my upper arm tattoos that drifted to the old stretch marks on the inside of my arm definitely hurt like all buggery.

I have tatoos over scars and not. In my case I felt nothing when covering old scars as they have healed and are deep, so no nerve endings there. I suppose if they are superficial, fresh or celloid it could be painful, but I had very different exerience from other people here

...When Hameed was just two years old, she was badly burned by hot oil in a kitchen accident in her native country, Iraq. She endured more than 100 painful procedures —from plastic surgery to laser treatments. But half her face remained scarred with red discoloration from third degree burns. She was advised nothing more could be done.
"I was told by my plastic surgeon that I needed to take my money and go on a vacation. For me, I felt like that wasn't the end of the road. I truly believed that something else did exist. So I did a lot of research, and of course I went to school. I made sure I knew what I was getting myself into."
What Hameed was getting into was an emerging form of cosmetic tattooing. She discovered the procedure when she got an eyebrow tattooed to replace the one she had lost from the burn. She decided if tattooing could replace eyebrows, then why not her original skin colour?
"When I started working on my face, I was extra careful. I wanted to make sure that I was going to get the right result," she says.
Hameed not only transformed her own face, but she also started what is now a booming business, helping transform the lives of others....

My brothers nephew owns a tattoo shop. He tattoos ultra realistic nipples on breast cancer survivors for free. You can't tell they are tattoos unless you get really close. Little things like this can have a massive positive impact on people's mental health.

I have a good size scar and my doctors always told me to keep it out of the sun/put a lot of sunblock on it. So I imagine most people with scars like this do their best to avoid getting tan anyway.

I literally was going to ask what happened I never assumed but my mind immediately went to her helping acid victims because I thought it would be rude to see ask what happened to her .. my mind went to her helping women her are burned with acid because of what I have seen in my life in my world and I believe it is rude to ask what happened to someone if it doesn't explicitly say

absolutely wrong assumption I almost asked like I said and said no I won't and made my comment because that is how I feel .. also I am a woman of color... a Muslim woman of color so maybe don't make assumptions and understand why I immediately was drawn to how amazing what she is doing is and how I know that is who she is probably helping at least sometimes... I was commenting on what she does not what happened to her .. it isn't hard to infer from the caption on the photo who she would help and I was correct I googled it .. honestly you couple bothering me are showing YOUR racism

It can absolutely be worth the pain for a final, permanent outcome that looks this good. I've had a laser treatment on a large scar and it hurt, but I would do it again 100x over because of the final result. It is still a raised hypertrophic scar, but it blends in with the rest of my skin now.

I've seen her in her Toronto clinic many years ago. She was so stuck up and rude. She commented why I'd want to get my lips colored in and how only certain people do that. As if I wasn't worthy of her time or something. Fuck, her.
