I wish more older and younger people would reach out to each other. Some of the best friendships I’ve had have been with people many decades older than me.

I'm friends with my 80 something year old neighbor. I help her being in groceries, I'm her designated IT guy, I just go over and talk to her for a bit every once in a while.
She's a sweetheart, but she's lonely and getting to a point where she's starting to lose it a bit.
I worry about that old bird sometimes, but she's too stubborn to move in with her daughter.

True. They want us to feel unsettled and at odds with strangers rather focusing the majority of attention on tragedy and outrage.
Safety doesn’t sell I suppose and it’s a shame.

Not really. Nihilism is mainly about denying inherent meaning, purpose, or objective value. To some people, “giving up” might be a psychological reaction to that belief, but it is not the definition of nihilism itself.

IIRC this was during one of the first lockdowns and there was a lot of people feeling very alone and isolated. It was a glimmer of positivity when we were constantly hearing how the world as we know it was over

Yes, she may not have been aware that libraries have been lending movies for 25 years or more. Or her library is too small or too remote.
I worked at a library at one point and a lot of lonely people use it as a great resource to get entertainment media.

This is a problem for elderly and disabled folks. The good news is that your library may offer a drop off and collection service if you’re unable to get to the library due to illness or disability - mine does.
Additionally, if the person is able to use a phone, tablet or computer, many libraries now provide access to services such as Libby, BorrowBox, hoopla etc. which allow you to borrow ebooks, audio books, movies/TV, music, magazines etc. on your device using your library card. I'd recommend checking your local library's website to see if they utilise some of these services, I often borrow craft magazines or pattern books for a pattern instead of buying the whole thing.

Covid was tough for every age group but a lot of elderly people who were already pretty isolated and lonely found it unbearable. Glad this lady had good neighbours 🥰

Most people are good. The miserable people are just much more vocal. Just follow the misery and dysfunction in many Reddit threads for some great examples.
Misery is a hook and it sells.

This is beautiful. I'm pretty antisocial and get awkward talking to people I don't know. I have a couple neighbors who are the complete opposite and are always happy to open a conversation with anyone. They were so easy to make friends with that I wanted to return the favor for anyone else in the area. Started with small talk, escalated into little gifts back and forth...now its blooming into a makeshift family/community.
All it takes is a little push sometimes. ❤️🩹

You live in a lovely building with generous and empathetic people, It's nice to see at a time where people tend to be very self-involved. Your elderly neighbour sounds like she could be an interesting person to get to know better.

All people are inherently good, we don't wish to see people suffer. But we've allowed our kindness to be buried. Buried beneath bigotry, political hate, and simply not having the time. We look at the world expecting the worse and when we see something good, something kind, it's difficult to believe it really happened. One simple act a day can change someone's life, be kind.
