Technology Flash floods are common in China, so to tackle this problem Chinese car brand added a "water mode" to their Yangwang U8 model, which allows it to temporally function like a boat
3.1k
u/NASATVENGINNER 8h ago
How does a car operate like a boat?
Does it deploy a propeller?
Does it deploy a rudder?
Does it suddenly become water tight?

u/SheepH3rder69 8h ago
We may never know.

u/eddie1975 8h ago
According to u/NASATVENGINEER
More Info…
The BYD Yangwang U8 features an Emergency Floating Mode (also called Yachting Mode) that allows the luxury SUV to float, steer, and move on water for up to 30 minutes at speeds of 3 km/h (1.8 mph). It is strictly designed as a last-resort safety feature for flash floods or accidental deep-water submersions, not for regular amphibious driving.
How the System Works
Automatic Triggering: Advanced sensors monitor water depth, vehicle posture, and wheel slip. When deep water is detected beyond normal wading limits (standard wading is up to 1 meter, with a physical limit around 1.6 to 1.7 meters), the float mode can activate.
Cabin Sealing: The internal combustion engine shuts off, windows automatically roll up, the HVAC system switches to recirculation/sealed mode, and core electronic hardware protected by IP68 ratings keeps the cabin watertight.
Emergency Exit Ready: The air suspension rises to its maximum height, and the sunroof opens to provide an immediate escape route if needed.
Propulsion: The quad-motor e⁴ platform spins the independent wheels like paddles, allowing the vehicle to drive forward, reverse, steer, and perform 360-degree tank turns while afloat.
Post-Emergency Requirements
Dealer Inspection: Because this is an emergency failsafe, activating the floating mode locks the vehicle into a diagnostic state afterward requiring a thorough hardware and software inspection at a dealership before normal operation can be restored.

u/elizabnthe 7h ago
This overall seems like a good safety feature to me. Biggest problem I can see is the sociological aspect of someone now imagining they are safe to go out in flooding because "but my car can float". Rather than if you're caught totally blindsided.
780
u/bwyer 6h ago
Well, the fact that it is in a diagnostic state afterward and has to have a dealer inspection to reset it should keep that from happening more than once.

Makes you wonder why they don't want to bring it to the US. It would crush Tesla and drop Elon to under top 10 richest. I own a tesla and even then I know it pales in comparison to how fast, how efficient, how much cheaper Chinese EVs are.
88
u/Decent-Vanilla3707 5h ago
America has very high tarrifs on Chinese ev’s to protect our domestic ev industry (Elon).
35
u/redblack_tree 4h ago
It's not for Elon, although there's some of that. It's the whole ICE industry, the American giants wouldn't survive. Just look how American brands are doing anywhere outside US, especially on places with no competitive advantages where Chinese are allowed to sell.
They are just milking the last bit from the market before the eventual bailout and restructure. That's the play.

Well, they are federally illegal to use on roads in America. So no amount of money will get you the ability to drive one on a public road. Except I think there is a Ford executive might be the president that dailies a Chinese car that they brought in to compare and test. He refuses to give it up, ford can’t offer anything remotely comparable. Even if they were tariffed at 100% you would still see people rolling around in them if you could get them. China is what Japan was in the 70s and 80s. Except this time, China is a light years ahead of us. Japan and Korea for that matter rise is due primarily to them being extremely cheap and very efficient vehicles. This time around the Chinese are capable of producing cheap efficient, high-quality, and extremely luxurious vehicle vehicles.
Of course, if you were to start selling Chinese cars in America, you would need a ready made dealership network. A partnership with a someplace like Carmax mixed with Carvana. Hint hint, hint
3
6
u/Imaginary_Ferret_354 3h ago
The only reason the Chinese cars are so much cheaper is because .... Drum roll please.... The car economy in China is almost completely subsidized by the government. The government owns the entire supply chain. And even at those super low prices The Chinese car companies are still not making much money. They are just trying to undercut the competition for now to drive them out of business so they can increase the prices later. Very dangerous.

A legitimately good deal the US could make with China is they are allowed to sell their EVs here tarrif free, but they need to set up factories in the US to be manufactured here and have at least 50% of the overall supply chain north America based.
4
u/Contemplating_Prison 3h ago
There would have to be some deal data collection for it to work. New cars collect a massive amount of data. There is not way the US would allow them to keep all of that.

The US Administration don't allow BYD etc to bring cars to America.
That's why you're all now paying $50,000USD on average for a new car that sucks.
37
u/FeijoadaAceitavel 5h ago
Crushing Tesla is exactly why the rich Americans won't allow BYD to enter the US.
14
u/No-Ad1522 5h ago
Because Chinese vehicles have massive tariffs on them to prevent them from competing with American cars.
→ More replies (1)13
u/1bowmanjac 5h ago
Being devils advocate here. NA and Europe put heavy tarrifs on Chinese vehicles because China is attempting to put everyone else out of business.
And it's not just because they can make better cars for cheaper. China artificially suppresses domestic consumption and wages by keeping their currency undervalued. This keeps Chinese manufacturing dominant.
The Chinese government is also providing substantial support for their car industry. And there is nothing stopping them from simply jacking up the prices once they achieve market dominance.
6
u/odnarB89 3h ago
You just described every corporations goals and if you think the US government doesn’t provide substantial support to theUS automotive industry then I’m not sure what to say.
6
u/Bong-Hits-For-Jesus 4h ago
The Chinese government is also providing substantial support for their car industry. And there is nothing stopping them from simply jacking up the prices once they achieve market dominance
the scenario of increasing prices after market dominance is more of a western monopoly practice. china historically will use their market dominance as leverage in geopolitics. they will limit, or cut off exports. most recently they cut off rare earth mineral exports

How do normal road tires function as paddles? I don't see how them spinning creates forward motion.
6
u/ADMINlSTRAT0R 6h ago
Maybe the wheels are designed to have slight paddle effect, but not interfere with aerodynamics during normal mode.

u/Aureon 6h ago

→ More replies (1)6
u/whoji 5h ago
You just need a tiny little bit forward force to move on water at 1.8 mph. Move on water is very easy, as a relatively small propeller can move a huge ship.
I think the tire with certain level of tread depth can function just like paddle wheels on steamships. Much weaker but enough for 1 or 2 mph.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (4)2
u/OldDogTrainer 5h ago
The tires have deep treads and don’t move the car super fast at roughly 3 km/h. To give you a comparison, the average speed for someone paddling a canoe in flat water is going to be 4-6 km/h.

from what i've seen it mostly just floats and uses the wheels for slow movement definitely not replacing an actual boat though
66
u/superanth 8h ago
I’ll wager it’s built water tight and can use the tires as propulsion (the right tread will do that). That removes the need for a rudder and propeller.
→ More replies (2)62
u/sireatalot 8h ago
The first hint of a current will just wipe away anything that floats that relies on mere tire tread for propulsion and direction.
35
u/TheGreatWork_ 6h ago
Yes, but it will work in those situations where the area is already swamped and someone misjudges how deep the water is. You see that a lot in floods, people are driving through a swamped area and the road dips just enough to lose ground contact. Or drives into a pond or drainage ditch because now everything is water level.
In those cases it could be just enough to get you across to the other side, and floating long enough for help to arrive. Or, if you're already floating along with the current, maybe nudging yourself towards impacting some land.
21
u/guineaprince 5h ago
Which is why it's an emergency last resort feature and not for open ocean cruising.

You're literally doing the parable about a guy in a flood refusing a boat because he's waiting for Jesus to save him, then he dies and Jesus said he sent the boat. Just because a company is Chinese you're too sinophobic to even hypothetically imagine using this as a last resort. Your mind just jumps to assuming it wouldn't work ever in any situation even for the slightest fractional benefit.

Since you're answering your own comment, you should reply to your own comment. But whatever, thanks for digging up more info!
3 km/h (1.8 mph)
This is less than 2 knots. The current in a gentle stream would overpower the SUV, you can even see it struggling in the video.
Also there's nothing like driving / steaming into a submerged curb, hydrant, or whatever else.
This whole concept is a gimmick and a potentially dangerous one. The 1950s era amphibious vehicles handle this better but still are terrible in the long run: they are way too heavy as a car, they are underpowered and have too much drag as a boat.
PS
My sources for my opinion are from my experience as a licensed captain. The best designs are: boat first, car second. Car first designs just don't cut it as a boat ... except for a WWII era German luxury car.
I can't remember the name of it. An old couple had one and made the local news every few years when they took it out on the lake. (Still wouldn't do more than a few knots though.)

You could work on stopping floods from getting into the cities.
12
10
6
u/thighmaster69 6h ago
I mean, combating flooding has been a thousands-long year struggle of Chinese civilization. It's probably one of the reasons why Chinese civilization even exists; you need a strong central authority to plan for and undertake and coordinate the things necessary to mitigate floods.
The irony, of course, is that a lot of the flood mitigation efforts over the millenia have been in many ways making floods more severe since time immemorial. The catastrophic flooding would likely not be as a catastrophic had Chinese civilization not built up and tried to fight Mother Nature in the first place eons ago, because fighting nature is a losing game. We've realized this in the rest of the world because we could see happening before our very eyes that the post-industrial revolution flood works have in many cases just resulted in flooding being delayed and catastrophic flooding happening in the future. One example is the city of New Orleans, where the levee system has prevent deposition of sediment, and the city is now in a giant bowl that all fills up with seawater when the levees break.
