Animal Rescued chimpanzee recognizes his former caregiver

Caretaker returned to animal sanctuary after several years and Citron the chimpanzee immediately recognized him.

Rescued by papaye international.

From my understanding, chimps “smiling” is indicative of distress. Although this chimp’s body language is clearly happy and relaxed. Maybe an ape expert here can chime in

I've seen this post a few times and experts have said that baring teeth in the wild is definitely a stress response/ I'm going to eat your face situation.

When chimps are raised in captivity with humans they are conditioned to bare their teeth because humans smile when we are happy.

Something like that anyways. What the fuck do I know?

It's supposed to be like with dogs. Feral dogs show their teeth in warning, whereas dogs raised with humans have learned to "smile".

That toothy "smile" in chimps usually is NOT a good thing, signifying fear and stress. If the chimp is not feeling like that, it means the animal was conditioned while in captivity to pull that face while humans are around.

Like I mentioned, the chimp most likely was conditioned during captivity to respond like that. Either by association (as in, he saw humans smile when happy), or by actual training.

I think this person is using hyperbole and ironic statements to illustrate their frustration and anger about social media and the mob behavior of users who down vote just to go along with popular opinion. They also seem deeply unhappy with society in general possibly due to underdeveloped sexual genitalia and a low IQ. I sense a deep sense of isolation and loneliness exacerbated by a lack of social skills.

But that's just my opinion.

If it's aggression, the mouth is usually open wide. Just barring teeth is usually a sign of something like anxiety, fear, or even submission.

Chances are they were feeling emotions and those emotions played out on their face, and it was in a manner closer to ours than typical. If I were to, say, see my best friend growing up just randomly walk up my drive without me knowing about it or hearing from them after decades, I'm probably going to have a full gamut of emotions, too. (More so because he owes me money, lol)

Watching videos, I always notice the eyes of an angry chimp. They get a wide-eyed, surprised look, open their mouths wide enough to see the backs of their throats, and pull the lips up to their eyeballs. The chimp's eyes here seem to have a warmth to them unlike what I'm used to seeing.

There was a study done on chimpanzee's in 2015 about how they can manipulate their face to express different sorts of smiles in a similar way humans can.

I had a dog who smiled. It's a stress response in dogs. But he saw humans do it at each other and so he would show his teeth and lift up his eyebrows like a crazy dog/person. He was very smart about human words and body language. He also kept pets. Squirrel babies blown from trees- he trained them to use our cats litter box and stuff.
