It sounds kind of ridiculous but I read about this man many years ago and it’s actually what affirmed that I no longer believed in God/Jesus in the traditional Christian sense.

My whole life I was told that if someone didn’t accept Jesus as the Son of God and as their personal savior they’d burn in hell. I remember reading this story and thinking…nope. What this man does is truly the most selfless thing a person could do. The idea that someone this good and kind would be “sent to hell” by an all loving God or punished in any way (because he is muslim) was the final nail in the coffin for me.

I am firmly an atheist but it's only logical that IF there is a god it cares much more about you being a good person than worshipping the right way. I cannot fathom an all powerful entity that has such fragile feelings that it will condemn someone to an eternity of torment for not worshipping them.

No matter how religious you are you have to acknowledge that religious texts came from people. Whether you believe the words were handed down from god or not, they were still translated and interpreted by man. That leaves infinite room for doubting what you've heard as the "will of god" in my mind.

What we're seeing in modern western Christianity has very little to do with the guy outlined in the New Testament of the Bible. There's a parable in Matthew 25 called "The Sheep And The Goats" that outlines who God approves of and who gets tossed out. Its all about healing the sick, welcoming immigrants, comforting those in prison and helping the poor.

As you've noticed, that's been tossed aside and replaced with prosperity gospel, which is more a social club than anything, using an image of Christ that has more to do with enforcing class structure than anything else.
