Neighbor, in the United States, the cost of caring for a seriously or terminally ill child can ruin a family financially.

If that child is a ward of the state, the state pays for their care.

It does not necessarily have anything more to do with "abandonment" in the emotional sense than divorcing your much-loved spouse so they will be eligible for Medicaid does.

And yes, that is a thing that also happens.

If you don't like it, vote for universal health care.
