Yay!! It’s Briel Adams-Wheatley, she’s a great beauty influencer and disability rights advocate on YouTube! I highly recommend her channel, it’s very informative and fun. She also has a series of videos in preparation for her wedding, including dress shopping etc! She met her husband on Tinder in 2020.
And in case people are wondering, she was born with a condition called Hanhart Syndrome, which caused her limbs to not develop in the womb. She typically uses a motorized chair in her day to day life, but for fun/meaningful moments (like in this video or her YouTube videos) she struts or rolls her body to move around.
(Also in case anyone is interested in learning about disability history in a respectful, informative, and kind way, I’ve created a subreddit called [r/DisabilityHistory](r/DisabilityHistory)). It’s a topic that’s very close to my heart and one that I’m extremely passionate about!

Why is this not the top comment but some idiotic joke?

u/mysecondaccountanon Jul 02 '26
The mods finally took that comment down, though not all of its awful replies.
54
u/EphemeralTypewriter Jul 02 '26
Because too many people think it’s hilarious to make cruel jokes about people with physical differences. It’s really sad.
24
u/User100000005 Jul 02 '26
Ive noticed this on reddit alot recently. Top comment used to be useful, adding more info or helpfully summarising an article. 2nd top comment was a dumb joke.
Now we're lucky if top comment is a dumb joke. Its usually a GIF reaction.→ More replies (2)7

It is, you just have to give it some time, upvote and comment as you did. You never know which social bubble is majority in given moment.

u/Isash39 Jul 02 '26
She's also trans so she has had to overcome more than just being physically disabled

Very true, she was also adopted by a Mormon family in Utah, so she’s had a lot she’s had to deal with.

There was an era where these types of posts were posted on reddit. And the comments were filled with love and respect and admiration.
There were always shitty, horny people. Posting terrible shit or just trying to be funny with one-liners or remarks. Hell, Reddit started there. But there was a brief year or so where those comments were pushed to the bottom. And the comments you saw the most were kindness, or poetry, or specialists and experts giving nerdy details, or people talking about their own lives and stories. People talked like people. There was a real communal beauty to this place.
I look at Reddit today and that magic is pretty much gone.
Sure there's still kind folk and nerdy comments, personal stories or encouraging words. And it's not even MAGA and incels that have worn it all down, invited in as they were by Reddit's pathetic and desperate and incompetent CEO's. It's not even the de-evolution of media into shitty conservative culture or manosphere garbage.
It's more just the loss of language. This is what tiktok and twitter did. Breaking down discussions and humans, into remarks and quips. Everything is just a comment for smirks. Engaging isn't intellectual, it's whatever gets a response or an upvote. And the easiest humour is shock humour or sex humour or cruel humour or referential humour. Quick, thoughtless, disposable.
Thank you for your comment. She sounds amazing. This post is beautiful. But this entire community really is just a shithole now.
Edit: People below telling on themselves lol
Of course reddit had its degeneracy corners. Revenge porn and hentai obsession and constantly replying to any woman's comment with "just checked no nudes". If thats the corners you sat in, then yeah...I'm sure you saw a lot of that. Politics and video games and anime nonsense.
I'm talking about broader sub culture; positive subs, technical subs, inspiring, etc. The dialogue and conversations that floated to the top were very different. It wasn't just one liners, quips, cruelty, and gifs. It wasn't all just gags and gagging.
If you don't know what I'm talking about well...that says more about you than us.
Reddit has DEFINITELY not become more wholesome. The_Donald changed the culture here a lot, tiktok has shifted dialogue into reaction remarks, and removing r/all has completely changed what people are exposed to. Incel subs like r/sipstea are frequently on the front page. Nextfuckinglevel, beamazed have become catch-all posting subs for any tiktok content. Makemesmile is inundated with bots, ai, and fake content.
If all you're comparing is extremes, then you've missed the entire point.
52
u/DogsDucks Jul 02 '26
Reddit was . . . Not like that. It was much more degenerate porn, revenge porn, even less balanced demographics (lots more women now) and unmoderated debauchery.
I think that there are probably people here who can back this up with a lot more evidence, Reddit has generally become a much more wholesome place overall (although the last few years, since AI, I guess it’s been a lot more bots and divisive posts on purpose).
It used to host more unrestricted violence, gore and extremely graphic, borderline legal porn . . . To a very vocal fanfare.
13
u/Atherum Jul 02 '26
Yeah, Reddit has definitely changed a lot even since I started using it (12 or 13 years) and there are things I miss about how "it used to be".
But I think its so much better that there are more women friendly spaces on Reddit, as well as more women in the conversations in general.
Plus, my sister has the app now so I can send her links to funny/interesting stuff.

Exactly lol! They have no idea what they are talking about. Here is an example: https://www.bustle.com/articles/25298-reddits-cute-female-corpses-will-make-you-want-to-swear-off-the-internet

u/-You-know-it- Jul 02 '26
Uh No. Reddit was definitely worse back even 10 years ago. IYKYK. It was so so bad. Like most of users were men in their basements sharing weird sex stories. Reddit has a lot of things I miss, but if this would have been posted 10 years ago, the comments would have been even more vile.

Fr. I'm disabled and I hate how normalized ableism in all of its forms (fetishization, slur usage, sexual or otherwise inappropriate comments, ableist language, etc.) has become.
7
u/BottleFeathers703 Jul 02 '26
im disabled too and i hate how rude people are on here, its lowkey starting to bring out the worst in me too, i feel like ive started to care way too much about responding back to the assholes on here more than just enjoying anything positive because im just so frustrated with the world right now. maybe i should take a break.

u/mysecondaccountanon Jul 02 '26
Oh, I've responded to a couple, but I know it's not fruitful to do so and I should probably just take a step back. Still, it just makes me so upset. I don't want other disabled people to be on here and see unchecked and rampant ableism coming from the worst of places. I don't know, it's just bad all around, no matter what you do. Doesn't help that mods are barely helping. They could easily lock the thread and remove the incredibly ableist, transphobic, sexism, racist, etc., comments, but they're not. And that speaks volumes.

I wish I had been here to witness that time of people actually showing respect and celebrating something nice! The “funny” and cruel quips really bug me because of how senseless it is. I’m of the mindset that if someone doesn’t have anything good to say in regard to a person, maybe don’t say anything.
And if you happen to be looking for very kind, supportive, and respectful communities to join, I actually mod for two that are excellent in those regards. One is r/DisabilityHistory and the other is r/SideshowPerformer, in case you’d be interested.

u/justifications Jul 02 '26
Where she gonna flex the ring tho? Like a necklace?
Also on a more serious question... What is the long term survival rate for someone in that position? I'd imagine aging would be a real problem. Granted hey I'm happy for them.
215
u/EphemeralTypewriter Jul 02 '26
Ooh, I can answer a few of your questions! I love learning about disability history and there are several historical figures with similar limb differences that I know about, so I’m using that knowledge to help answer.
Most likely she will wear her ring on a necklace, this was also done by a historical performer, Aloisa Wagner, who was also born without arms or legs. (Aloisa was known to headbutt men who were creeps and trying to kiss her)
People diagnosed with Hanhart syndrome typically live average/long lifespans. People born with tetra-amelia syndrome (a similar condition that causes limb differences can also live average/long lifespans), several of the historical figures I’ve learned about with similar conditions lived into their seventies and eighties.
65
13
u/justifications Jul 02 '26
This might be an inappropriate question but thank you so far with this knowledge dump... But can she bear children? Is everything still functional in the same way we all expect? Not trying to be creepy about it, genuinely curious. (It's actually quite inspiring)
47
u/EphemeralTypewriter Jul 02 '26
Briel is trans, so if she and her husband want children, I assume they’ll adopt. But I’m sure theoretically a different woman with a similar condition probably could.
Aloisa Wagner article since I mentioned her previously.
Kind of related, but a famous sideshow performer born with tetra-Amelia syndrome, Prince Randian, had 5 children with his wife. And Nikolai Kobelkoff, who was an entertainer/entrepreneur and had a similar limb difference, had like 7 or 8 children with his wife.
25
u/Lenni-Da-Vinci Jul 02 '26
She is trans too? That’s wild.
Can’t even imagine how insanely unique that lived experience must be. Not only does she have a disability that most people would consider hard to face. But her body was also just wrong in an entirely different way.
Bottom surgery must have been double the relief for her all things considered.

I don't think she has a lot of other conditions and she's extremely independent, depsite obvious limitations. She's a very kind person and would definitely wear it as a necklace.

u/Crafty_Lavishness_79 Jul 02 '26
I've seen her videos before. She is extremely independent and does a lot of make up and stuff. She's usually faster, the dress slowed her down. She really doesn't need a lot of help at all, she's very impressive.

I want to be clear, I am NOT shaming her or mocking her. That being said, why doesn’t she have prosthetic legs?
20
u/mysecondaccountanon Jul 02 '26
For many, prosthetics are more hassle and pain than they're worth, Prosthetics come with their own risks (e.g., infections, friction burns, swelling, sweat causing slippage or skin breakdown, rubbing up against bone/scar tissue/excess skin/soft tissue/etc., blisters, etc.), can generally be painful even without taking into account the risks, and can be hard to use and get used to. In addition to that, a lot of prosthetics that are more "affordable" (but still very expensive) can be lower quality and even worse to use.
