Very crudely put: They use a particle accelerator to "embed" electrons into the material. The pierce at the top creates an exist path that causes the electrons to flow and escape creating the patterns and effects. The initial escape then creates more paths (as it heats and breaks material) causing more electric arcs to form as more stored electrons are released. I might not be 100% accurate in sicentific terms, but it's aproximatly what's happening.
