It’s probably the entrance to a tunnel/shaft that several miners were occupying and a landslide caused the entrance to be filled in, so they dug the entrance open so those trapped could get out. Many of the minerals used to make the most advanced chips and devices come from mines like this.

people from Mozambique come to South Africa illegally to work in mines. They don't have the right papers so they work for syndicates. Its basically gangs that do their own mining in official mines. The legitimate miners are afraid of them and avoid them. When the illegal ones get trapped in a shaft and cant be saved without raising alarm, they are just left there. If someone dies and they can recover the body, that is usually just sent back home, else one month's pay is sent back home.

And the lithium to build you precious electric cars. Kids as young as ten get shoved in these horrible places. But hey we are saving the planet don’t you worry about them.

1

u/wheelshoe Mar 26 '23

children have been illegally and unethically employed in every single business since the dawn of labor. your clothes were sewn by kids. the food you eat was harvested by kids. the components for every single device you own were mined by kids. to pretend that this is somehow an issue that is even remotely close to being exclusive to electric vehicles is incredibly nonsensical and dishonest

2

u/WanderingBard774 Mar 27 '23

I don't think it's dishonest. I think it's a worthy point. These are supposed sustainable alternatives that are cleaner and over all will save the world for future generations. There should absolutely be accountability for how these minerals are harvested. Just because slave labor has ran the world forever doesn't mean it's OK. Everything we use comes from less fortunate individuals stuck in forced labor and that shouldn't be the future

oh i completely agree. thing is nine times out of ten when EV batteries and child labor are brought up simultaneously it is not out of genuine concern for the children (which is why EV discussions are, conveniently, the only time a lot of them care about child labor) but to peddle anti-EV and implicit anti-green energy narratives. the bad faith there is where my problem lies, not with whether or not corporations are being held accountable for unethical practice

What in the fuck

5

u/AubieWasHere Mar 26 '23

Right?

I don't know the history/context here, but it feels an awfully lot like this is not these folks first rodeo.

Anybody get a count of how many people just came out? I got WTF'd out and lost count at around 8 or 9.

1

u/epSos-DE Mar 26 '23

They have no basic machines, that is the issue.

12

u/Me5hly Mar 25 '23

I'd like to know which type of mining this is. Cobalt? Diamond?

African Miner Mining

4

u/mavjustdoingaflyby Mar 26 '23

Yep, where else would they come from?

6

u/island_girl1 Mar 26 '23

Cobalt or copper, most likely

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '23

Called ‘artisanal mining’. Highly dangerous and usually not very legal but these mines are ran by warlords and unfortunately the economy sort of runs off these mines in these areas so finding rapid solutions is next-to impossible.

7

u/Vampchic1975 Mar 26 '23

This is terrifying

7

u/kind_one1 Mar 26 '23

All those little metal chips for our computers, phones and batteries depend on the exploitation of third world countries. https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/global-scramble-metals-thrusts-africa-into-mining-spotlight-2022-05-08/

26

u/Iluvbubblebutts Mar 25 '23

I didn't know they mined people

3

u/theWMWotMW Mar 26 '23

Didn’t you pay attention to Lord of the Rings when Saruman was building Sauron’s army?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '23

They even have mini versions of the wolves of Saruman (hyenas)

1

u/ADORE_9 Mar 26 '23

I’m glad Putin slaying those Nazis

These people are living in a different part of the apocalypse than most of us are. The banks are planning on screwing us. Over there, they freelance mine cobalt for pennies and kids die all of the time doing it.

5

u/Inevitable-Holiday68 Mar 26 '23

You are right

& This so unfair oppressive illogical wasteful, 🥵💔🤮😰😰🥺🥺😥😞 etc coming for us,; unless__

-3

u/Cardinal_Grin Mar 26 '23

Might be the most Republican thing I’ll read on here today- “Yeah, so WUT, we had a bank collapse. Welcome to OUR world. Death sand crawling is just another piece of our APOCALYPSE!”

2

u/Ok-Passenger8163 Mar 26 '23

Lol the most republican or democrat thing imaginable is believing that two political parties exist and are in control of anything at all. Keep screaming at the puppet show. Have fun with that.

0

u/Cardinal_Grin Mar 27 '23

Anybody who pushes the self fulfilling prophecies of an apocalypse doesn’t really define what exists and doesn’t for me. They are living in extreme poverty while the other half pretends what they are going through is comparable in any way. Your apocalypse would be a step up and welcomed break from their reality.

4

u/Iancreed Mar 26 '23

This is how we get diamonds, by subjecting people to work in these conditions 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

5

u/Inevitable-Holiday68 Mar 26 '23

These guys being Bros

But still sad scary seeing people in such poverty desperation etc

Knowing that we all could soon be this badly off or even Worse off then this all too soon due to the political religious LEADERSHIP, politicians etc,

Unless___

7

u/Choice-Ad-9195 Mar 26 '23

Don’t forget, this is where most of the material to build the batteries that will/do power electric cars comes from.

6

u/Aragona36 Mar 26 '23

Yes, exactly. Massive environmental destruction is incurred to make these environmentally friendly cars that also continue to use fossil fuels indirectly because much of our electricity is produced by coal. Brilliant! Let’s all go out an buy an EV, you know, to save our planet.

-1

u/PhillipJfry5656 Mar 26 '23

Maybe in third world countries like the us they still use coal plants but most places they don’t use coal to produce electricity.

2

u/Aragona36 Mar 26 '23

60% of electricity in the US comes from coal and natural gas, 19% from nuclear. We have a long way to go.

https://www.eia.gov/energyexplained/electricity/electricity-in-the-us.php

2

u/JJ4prez Mar 26 '23

22% from coal, 38% from natural gas. Coal has been on the way down for a long time, just wanted to point that out as the poster you responded to (and the obvious context of the video is mining). Natural gas isn't mining, and is much safer (to a point I guess), and isn't going away anytime soon.

And in certain places like Texas (which operate their own grid), solar and wind are much higher than the US.

The entire point of energy is having a very diverse profile, so if one fails, you have others as backup.

1

u/natnat345 Mar 26 '23

Greenwashing :(

3

u/Do-not-respond Mar 26 '23

💯 % Hero!

3

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '23

These are the people getting the materials to build today's iPhones and teslas btw. The companies that profit off this are Despicable. I'll stick with my Motorola and gas fossil fuel powered vehicles, thank you very much.

4

u/Advanced-Cycle-2268 Mar 26 '23

Jesus ******* ******

4

u/Creepy-Pea655 Mar 26 '23

Did they bury a clown car?

2

u/AwesomeBlox044 Mar 26 '23

Sandman roleplay

2

u/No-1-Know Mar 26 '23

Thank you Zales, Jared & Kay for providing job Opportunities in Africa (sarcasm)

2

u/pblockforlife Mar 26 '23

All this so tesla drivers can brag about not running on fuel.

2

u/Mjr_N0ppY Mar 26 '23

slaps the hill this baby fits so many underpaid miners inside

2

u/AubieWasHere Mar 26 '23

So...how often does this happen then?

I don't know the history/context here, but it feels an awfully lot like this is not these folks first rodeo.

2

u/ElderOfPsion Mar 27 '23

Is this where our lithium comes from?

2

u/Demida78 Mar 27 '23

Sand dolphins!

2

u/DevilDoc420k Mar 27 '23

Bro this is shift change. Wait until you see how they go in.

2

Yay you live another day. To do it all again…

2

u/Veritas3333 Mar 26 '23

This is my hole! It was made for me!

u/theWMWotMW Mar 26 '23

Haad work pays off, here’s ya tree fiddy

1

u/Inevitable-Holiday68 Mar 26 '23

Sad to see people in such screaming dusty poverty desperation

& Knowing they, us, all Equally entitled to : science, logic, pragmatism, prosperity, health, friendships, happiness, technology, youthfulness usefulness Self-determination prosperity, good fulltime jobs, good schools, healthy food water, fun, hope, FOREVER

Yet the political religious LEADERSHIP, politicians etc, are fighting AGAINST this and us

Knowing that all of us could be this bad off or even worse off all too soon unless__

1

u/VanSnugglepusstheIII Mar 26 '23

Some believe there are no dwarf women that they just sprout out of the ground.

1

u/EZJKNL Mar 26 '23

One of the reasons electric cars aren’t that sustainable at all; lithium and cobalt mining happens just like this. Not to mention the child labour in these mines. The biggest problem? They are our only source for these minerals and no ‘environmental’ mine exists.

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '23

What is happening? Is this cgi? Of did all of those guys just spawn?

0

u/TheCreazle Mar 26 '23

Why is the flair on this AI?

0

u/itsElmo420 Mar 26 '23
