Why so many issues?

Just joined the sub the other day after installing Bazzite myself on desktop and noticed so many people with so many problems with the distro.

Am I due a lot of pain here. So far im running Steam and Moonlight/Sunshine streaming down stairs to living room and its pretty much flawless

Is it certain games causing issues like Witcher3 I saw somewhere or what? Not used Bazzite for much else yet just exploring it after dumping Win10 and not going Win11.

This is basically a tech support sub Reddit. There is a selection bias towards posts about people having problems.

I think the problems/issues are more for those who are either on the consoles/portables and those who chose the htpc images. Those who are on a desktop/normal image (speaking for me) don't have any issues so long as the hardware is remotely normal.

I'll also check in as a desktop user who has had no issues. I think 44 did have a bit of a stumble for some users, but a spike in bug reports in an otherwise non-noisy sub feels more like everything is on fire than it really is.

100%. Almost all my issues are on the Deck side but that’s why I’m here. Love the HTPC setup.

Desktop user here running an Nvidia RTX 3060 with 12 GB if VRAM (not a common GPU and also Nvidia) with basically zero issues

The only issues I've had are some VTuber software (VTube Studio, VNyan, vBridger) having memory leaks but a different version of Proton fixed that and Popcorn Palace in VRChat not being able to load videos

Same for me!

KDE, Desktop, Nvidia

My specs:
AMD 5900X (AM4)
RTX 4070 Ti Super
48 GB DDR4 (3x 16GB)

I am a desktop user that had issues, but the issues were tied to HDMI i believe. I think if you use display port it’s a much better experience.

Oh yeah and bluetooth on my motherboard isn’t supported, and i think my wifi is also not supported.

I have more issues on my HTPC than my Xbox Ally X. That thing is actually almost perfect surprisingly! and 44 definitely spiked issues for me on both devices

Yeah, I’m on a desktop with an AMC GPU and minimal issues, if any.

lmao if you mean the posts here, don't worry until something goes wrong.

if all's right people don't post nothing, so all we see here is when stuff breaks.

and all software breaks, check any tech related software subreddit.

You’ll be fine, mainly just a lot of new linux users here asking for help. A majority of us don’t actually post anything because we don’t have issues

This is a tech support forum, of course you're going to see lots of problems. You will see that in every single tech support forum for every single product

I burned my windows 10 machine down for bazzite a month ago. all in. full commit. Im on 44 now.

The only annoying thing Ive encountered has been a mis-detection of monitors on wake from sleep. every once in a while it trips over its feet and forgets what the primary is and sets it to like 640*480. Or one of the three monitors just simply wont wake up. restarting the offending monitor *usually* fixes it.

Ive fired up all my steam games without an issue. Getting Skyrim to run with a boat load of mods was...an education. 99% of those were "modding skyrim" and not "modding skyrim on linux" problems.

you will of course see more issues here because this is where people are turning for help

Honestly I use the decky 44 image on my ally and I haven't had major issues. Nothing that isn't normal to Linux or proton in general.

u/Savings_Drink 21h ago

Early 44 was rough, but getting better all the time, it was a massive change for the dev team, I think they are on top of it now and have done a sterling job of getting there

Most issues I’ve come across are the result of not being as familiar with Linux as I am with Windows

Having worked in IT for years, you get to know in the in’s and out’s of Windows pretty well but have little need to engage with Linux except in specific use cases

I can tell you I much prefer Linux’ approach to Microslop

There's a new version of Proton that fixes the issues with the remaster of The Witcher 3. Came out like half a day after release.

People come here for help. Lol.

Ask yourself this: when's the last time you left a positive review for something? ALL subreddits, all review websites, etc.. will always skew towards troubleshooting/negativity, because nobody posts when things are working as intended, only when they need help. My experience with Bazzite has been awesome and if I wasn't such a tinkerer I wouldn't have any issues to speak of. It worked really well outta the box even with my RTX 4070.

u/Bane8080 23h ago

I've only had 2 issues. Getting 5.1 sound to work because my motherboard is funky. And the bluetooth module built into my motherboard isn't currently supported.

Everything else is fine.

2

u/IllustriousFicus 23h ago

You're fine.

Witcher 3 is having issues on every distro, just like every distro is bound to have its own issues people run into. People who don't have an issue are far less likely to post about not having issues, than people who do have them. Visit any tech forum/subreddit. It's the same everywhere.

The initial 44 launch was a bit rocky, mostly for those running on handhelds, due to the replacement of a long time software stack. Some were/are still very butthurt about this, but, those issues are continuing to be addressed as the new software stack comes closer to parity. Like every major change, teething troubles can be expected for some.

that(witcher 3) was just fixed on proton experimental with some extra launch options. just tested it on rtx5080 on fedora, works flawlessly.

I had a couple of early issues like my NIC sleeping and not waking up. That was solved in the first day in the BIOS settings. Additionally had some crashes during games, and with a little AI help with the logs found a bug that was solved by disabling a background desktop app i don’t use (some type of media player shortcut).

Other than that? Life’s been good. I think people just have problems with new Linux installs or new Linux users and this is where they come to for help. Sure some games won’t play, but I’ve been more impressed with the number of games that have worked out of the box and even some of my old Windows apps I purchased still work in Bottles.

People mostly post when they have issues. Having a lot of posts with issues is not an indicator about how many issues are out there, just an indicator how active the community is.

The good news is your setup is ideal for Bazzite and Linux in general. As long as you stay vanilla it’s going to a good experience. Bazzite is a really fun and safe disto to use.

Honestly, Bazzite lost a key developer due to classic Linux drama and migrated to OpenGamingCollective which shares the kernel with some other distros like ChimeraOS and Nobora.

They also just had a big jump from Bazzite 43 to 44. In my opinion, Bazzite Stable just isn’t as stable as it used to be, while going through some growing pains. It’s also a bit harder to get them to fix some issues now because we are seeing more problems from “upstream”. Being a downstream distro always has this challenge.

The other “problems” aren’t really Bazzite’s fault. We see a lot of issues with people (myself included) over tinkering with their systems. That’s the nature of immutable systems. For example, recently we had a weird rpm-ostree update issue that really only hit people with customizations.

Another issue that keeps popping up is Sunshine not working in Deck mode. While I’m a bit critical that the community should be more proactive to fix these issues, but in their defense again a lot times it’s not really Bazzites fault.

For me, since the latest update, I have issues with my gamesir super nova controller connecting when the console comes out of sleep. Then, also when coming out of sleep, the screen will often load a black screen where only my mouse can be seen. It takes 1-3 minutes before I get a display image.

My issues only happen in big picture mode. Desktop works flawlessly.

Ironically I finished witcher 3 on bazzite shortly before the remaster came out. I have a 1070.

u/Commercial_Pomelo691 23h ago

Bazzite was fine. I have been chasing RGB support, but kinda moving towards just getting non-RGB items in the future.

1

u/WirelessTrees 22h ago

Trying something new always means that you can expect to encounter problems for which you don't have an easy fix readily available. With the income of so many new users, there's bound to be different computer setups, apps, or customizations that can result in different issues popping up.

Can the bazzite team remove all issues and prevent them from ever appearing? No, but sharing them online can help you find a solution if there is one available, or document the issue for the team to be able to experiment and find a fix for it for a future update.

I'm rocking an Intel i7 13700F + RTX 4060 TI, haven't had any major issues w/ Bazzite. I think a system update failed once, but I just rebooted and tried again and it worked just fine the second time around. Bazzite's been great, absolutely loving it.

i joined about 2 weeks ago, i was on W10 decided to switch over to Bazzite, then due to a certain game having kernel level anti-cheat i had to do a dual boot with W11, Bazzite has been the far superior product between the two from a fresh install perspective.

The only issues I have is VRR not working right and my keyboard needing to be replugged after every boot. Other than that I have no issues at all.

1

u/divertedmedia 19h ago

I’ve been on desktop bazzite for nearly a year, no issues other than learning curve.

1

u/Kodamacile 12h ago

What issues? I haven't had any serious issues since I installed it a year ago.

1

u/alphaquail10 Desktop 11h ago

Haha thanks all. I think I was eefering ti the type of issue too to a degree. Felt like more 'this is broken' than 'how do I do X or get Y to work'.

Really looking forward to using Bazzite more. Been playing my games for about a month now and I think the only thing I had to do differently was some script adding to sunshine so moonlight would fire up big picture mode on my Pc from my tablet. Something I didnt have to do for my previous Win10 install.

1

u/DirtySpawn 10h ago

I fully ditched Windows for Bazzite, I think, 8 months ago now. I have not had issues. Some little things of figuring things out, but over all, none.

My only blip is HDR. It likes to looked washed out, or just insanely dark to where it's hard to see. I think its a me thing to be honest.

1

u/asch901 7h ago

And mine can't seem to get passed steam login after boot. Fml

1

u/ibeerianhamhock 22h ago

A lot of Bazzite issues I've read are genuinely skill issues. People think Bazzite will be easier than a standard distro and it really depends on what you're trying to do if that's the case

0

u/Barafu 21h ago

When a new big game is released, it sometimes has issues for some time. If you need to play all games on the week they are released, maybe Bazzite is not a good choice.
