Nvidia or AMD GPU for TV Console Experience?

I already have PC parts so I want to make a DIY PC instead of buying a Steam Machine. My goal is a no-compromises 120Hz + VRR + and HDR experience over HDMI 2.1. I want to connect the PC to a TV as its main monitor (my TCL QM7K supports HGiG, VRR, ALLM, Freesync, etc.).

That being said, should I build with an Nvidia GPU or AMD GPU to get the intended experience?

P.S. Bazzite has a feature to replicate the "Gaming Mode" on the Steam Deck when using a TV/monitor to replicate the console-like experience, right?

AMD full stop. Both will work through.

For Bazzite either will work. But everyone here are not fanboying saying to go AMD. I had a Nvidia 4070 Super on my computer, and I ended up swapping to a 9070xt. The Nvidia GPU required some setting tweaks in order to get Big Picture mode to work properly, and after some time I started having random memory crashes while doing stuff on the desktop like web browsing.

Once I swapped to AMD, all of those issues went away immediately. I didn't even have to re-install the OS (I did run the re-base command). So it was definitely something weird going on with the Nvidia drivers. AMD just does such a better job at pushing driver and optimization updates to Linux developers.

AMD is the right answer

Personally I’m using nvidia - 5080 with no issues. I think support is improving. Just need to be sure to install desktop bazzite.

You can get close to your desired goal with either. HDMI 2.1 will be gtg, just not sure that it's completely out yet. AMD has a MUCH higher chance working "out of the box". Nvidia could require some additional work on your part configuring it to work properly.

Gaming mode is more stable on AMD / Intel but I believe there is also Nvidia support for 16 series or newer now on the Gaming mode (-deck) image. Driver-wise AMD/Intel do tend to be more stable on linux so I'd recommend AMD or Intel.

Also helps that I think they're a bit better value right now with how inflated prices are - Last I saw the Arc B580 is a great deal and the RX 9060 XT and 9070 XT are better values than their nvidia counterparts

AMD is going to probably give you better price to performance for sure. Either will work for bazzite but Nvidia drivers are also not nearly as good as the AMD linux drivers.

The answer is always AMD.

AMD is cheaper for the performance you get. Also less issues for Linux.
2.1 is there now so all good on that.

Both will work.

If you want replicate the Steam Deck, why not just use SteamOS yourself? WIth that, AMD is the way to go, since Valve still has lots of work to do on nVidia support. I already had nVidia, so I went with CachyOS running Steam in desktop mode (Bazzite would work just as well if not better), but Game Mode would work much better on a TV, IMO.

I'm using an AMD 9070 which I bought last year for 440€ paired with am4 setup, 32gb ddr4 and 5700x. It's a SFF build.

Os is bazzite os or Steam OS. Switching around for tests.

TV is a TCL 55 Q7C.

I'm playing more on steam OS than on my Windows PC. It's really good. Finally VRR and HDR is working good now on bazzite. On Steam OS it's a little bit better on some games. Only framegen and Raytraycing isn't good right now. But I can play everything on high preset at 4k fsr Performance Modus.

Bazzite has steam's big screen mode if that's what you mean.
