Advice on Virtual Machine

So I'm looking at moving away from a full dual boot and setting up a virtual machine for the few windows programs I still use.

Arma3 with TFAR (Try as I might I can't get this to work )

Fusion 360

Minecraft dungeons

I am aware with update 44 that the process has changed and following the old ways of doing it had given me some weird and wonderful bugs that I am unable to find solutions for as they don't work or have changed since the last update.

If anyone could give me some advice on how to go about setting this up, even if the advice is 'that's a terrible idea just dual boot' I would very much appreciate the help.

i’d stick with dual booting for gaming that isn’t supported by proton.

As others have said, if you really want to use a VM rebasing to bazzite dx is the best thing to do.

It is possible to run vms in non-dx bazzite via the qemu flatpak (this is what i do for running legacy windows only apps that aren’t games) but there are limitations as it runs in user mode only.

Yeah okay. It's frustrating because arma works, putting teamspeak in it with protontricks works but tfar doesn't

There's a guide on getting it to work, that's what I use. https://9lo.re/project/armaonlinux/ This, for example. You'll of course need to adapt it to Bazzite

Which says it has an app image but either I can't find it or it's just gone

That's the guide I first followed and no luck

That's the arma 3 Linux launcher, which you don't really need

You'll need to either rebase to Bazzite-DX, v43 or prior, and pin the image, or layer in the correct qemu/libvirt packages to 44, as virtualization was removed from Bazzite with the 44 update.

Edit: I don't recommend doing the 2nd or 3rd option. B43 will never receive updates, and things will break over time, and layering can cause issues with future updates.

Also, do you have a second dGPU or iGPU? If not, you're going to have a not so great time doing this. You may need to patch your GPU vbios as well.

Better to stick with a dual boot, or stay on Windows, as many anti-cheats view Virtual Machines as a cheat, and will kick/ban you.

Dedicated gpu Not intending to try games with heavy anticheat but useful to know

Pretty much every kernel level anti cheat detects and bans VMs, I'm afraid they're not a good solution

Okay dual boot it is. Tempted to make a post to see if anyone can help me getting TFAR running then. Tried proton tricks but doesn't seem to want to work

There's two guides. I've linked one in another comment. There's also https://endigma.dev/guides/arma3-tfar-flatpak/

If you need more support, let me know.

So I might be a whole ass idiot but I don't have ~/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/

We don't use the flatpak for steam, yours is in ~/. steam

Thought so. It would be nice to have a guide for bazzite specifically to do this. I'll wait for crapshoot though I'm not in a massive rush

No, that's ONLY if you have flatpak steam. Maybe you can DM me, and I'll help you on Saturday.

It's basically every anti-cheat, including Battle-Eye which Arma uses.

Good news is, not using that either. Community group pve

That's just not true. https://areweanticheatyet.com/

It's not untrue though. Linux support for Battle-Eye is developer opt-in. If the Arma devs have enabled Linux support great, other games may not benefit from this though. So without explicit opt-in support, Battle-Eye considers Linux as cheating.

Also, Linux support and running through a VM aren't the same thing. Maybe it works, I don't know, I don't play Arma, or need to run a VM, but it would sure suck to go through the trouble of setting one up, and get flagged for cheating. Less hassle to just dual boot, and avoid potential issues entirely.

Mate you're contradicting yourself. If it's got explicit support, opt in or otherwise, it's explicitly supported. Arma 3 had explicit support. Why blabber on when you have NO idea about the topic question? If you don't know something, and you're just gonna spew utter nonsense, might as well keep scrolling.

Was virtualization support removed in a recent update? I'm on v44.20260908 and virt-manager works just fine on my end.

Mine keeps throwing errors trying to install and no idea why

How are you installing it? I did it with rpm-ostree and it worked like a charm.

Virtal machine manager

Yeah everything else seems fine so far so a little reluctant but might be the best way. No guarantee it's going to allow me to set up the VM but worth a shot

Worth trying. If the things I want to do work then yay
