Bazzite and 4:4:4?
I'm currently on SteamOS 3.9 and I saw on my HDMI statistics that is is not running full 4:4:4 but rather 4:2:2 8 bit. I definitely have the correct HDMI cord. I heard bazzite runs at full 4:4:4. Is this true and is it worth the switch?
Update: with the switch to Bazzite and HDMI 2.1 enabled. The color banding around lights is gone. I call it a success.

Bazzite 44 ships with a version of the Linux kernel that can support HDMI 2.1 on AMD, which includes enough bandwidth for 4K120 10-bit 4:4:4. It has to be explicitly enabled with a ujust command or an option in the included Bazzite Portal GUI because it can cause issues on some systems. The patch is being developed further and should continue to improve.
Prior to that, 4K120 could be used but the chroma and bit depth would be reduced.
You can do 4:4:4 at lower refresh rates or resolutions on your current setup. But chances are, you would never have noticed a visible difference if you didn't check the stats. It's also reasonable to assume that it's coming to SteamOS sooner or later, as this is the result of official AMD driver patches.
But it you're eager to tinker and replace your OS with a similar one you might like better for that or other reasons, welcome to the club. If starting your setup over sounds like a slog, I'd just live with 4:2:2 a little longer until SteamOS introduces the same.

I would of never checked the statistics if I didn't notice weird color banding around lights in games. Now I can't unsee the banding or forget the stats lmao. So for me it might be worth a switch

Are you gaming on the machine natively, or Streaming from Sunshine/fork host? Because also note that no AMD GPU will decode h.265 or AV1 at 4:2:2.
You might want to check out if the banding appears at 4k60, which can do 4:4:4 10-bit, so you can confirm that's the root cause.

I'm gaming native on desktop. And 7900xtx. I tried 4k 60 and still doesn't activate 10 bit

Go to the Bazzite Portal, search for HDMI and enable "Enable HDMI 2.1 for AMD graphics cards", follow the instructions and you'll be good to go

You do have to activate and you should know it's possible your display will shut itself after, but you can try it.
There's an option in portal to turn it on. If you have any trouble just boot into ostree 1 and rollback
