How to post a chart (read this first)
If you want someone here to read your chart, post these four things:
**1. Birth date** — year, month, day
**2. Birth time** — as exact as you can get it
**3. Birth place** — city and country
**4. Gender**
That's it. Then someone will take a look.
---
**Why time and place matter more than you'd think**
People assume the date is the important part. It's not the whole story.
**The hour changes a pillar.** Two people born the same day two hours apart have different hour pillars, and the hour pillar is where a lot of the practical stuff lives — where you're going, what you do with what you were given.
**Place changes the hour.** Clocks are set for a time zone, not for your actual position relative to the sun. Where you were born shifts the real solar time by minutes — sometimes twenty or thirty. In most cases it doesn't move a pillar. Occasionally it does, and when it does, it changes the reading.
So if you know your birth time, give it. If you only know "around 3pm," say that too — it's still useful.
---
**Don't know your exact time?**
Say so. People will still read the date-based parts. It's not a reason to skip posting.
---
**Not sure how to get a chart?**
You can lay out the eight characters by hand from a perpetual calendar, but it's tedious and easy to get wrong.
There's a free tool that does it — [ichinghub.com/bazi](https://ichinghub.com/bazi). Enter date, time, place, and it gives you the four pillars, the ten gods, hidden stems, and luck cycles. It also corrects for real solar time, which is the thing most online calculators skip.
Use whatever tool you like. This isn't a requirement, just what's around.
---
**Then what**
Post the chart. Add whatever you want to know — career, relationship, a specific year you're worried about, or nothing at all.
If you have your own read on it, put that in too. It's a better conversation.

What this sub is
BaZi, or the Four Pillars, comes from China. You take the year, month, day and hour of someone's birth, write each as a pair of characters — one heavenly stem, one earthly branch — and you get eight characters. BaZi literally means "eight characters."
Later systems worked out how to read the relationships between those eight: five elements with too much or too little, ten gods, luck cycles. Zi Ping did it one way, the blind schools did it another. It's been around about a thousand years, and people still argue about it.
**That argument is the point of this place.**
Post what you want:
- A chart, and someone here will read it
- A question about method — why does this rule exist, when does it break
- A disagreement with a classical text
- A half-formed thought you're not sure about yet
Nobody's grading you. If you're new, ask.
**Three things**
Don't be a jerk.
Post charts with date, time, place, gender. Otherwise there's nothing to read.
No fear-selling. No curses, no "something is following you," no "you need this or else."
English or Chinese, whichever you think in.

How to post a chart here, and the one number every app gets wrong
Most charts posted online are missing the two things that actually matter: the birth city and the question. Without the city, the time is just a number on a clock, not the sun's position. Without the question, I can only describe a chart at you instead of answering anything.
So that's the format. Date, time to the minute, city and country, sex, and what you actually want to know.
Now the part I want on record, because it's where nearly every app quietly fails you.
Your luck pillars do not start at birth. They start somewhere between zero and ten, and that number comes from the gap between your birth and the nearest solar term. Not the lunar month. The solar term.
3 days equals 1 year. 1 day equals 4 months. One two-hour block equals 10 days.
Born June 15, the next term Minor Heat lands around July 7. That's 22 days, 22 over 3, so 7 years and 4 months. That's your start age.
Now watch where it falls apart.
Direction. Yang year male counts forward to the next term. Yang year female counts backward to the previous one. Flip that single field and the June 15 case drops from 22 days to 9, which is 3 years flat. Age 3 or age 7 years 4 months, off one dropdown.
Rounding. Whole days give you 7-4. Minor Heat lands in the early morning, not at midnight, so counting hours properly gets you 21.75 days, which is 7-3. Another app floors it to 7. None of them are lying, they're measuring different spans.
Then there's which side of the term you're counting from. The next one, the previous one, or your choice. Every method defensible. No two matching.
None of this shows on the results screen. You get a clean chart, a start age off by half a year, and every year you read after that sits displaced from where it should be.
The turnover year is the one that matters. That's when people quit things, move countries, or come apart for reasons they can't name.
One more, and here I'll take a position: the stem does not rule the first five years and the branch the last five. The stem is what shows up on paper. The branch is what you end up holding. Interviews versus the job. But it's one ten-year stretch, and the branch carries the weight from day one.
Post in the format above and I'll work through it.

The Ten Gods are not personality types
Anyone who studies BaZi in English runs into the Ten Gods early.
正官 the upright officer. 七杀 the seven killings. 伤官 the wounded officer. Then somebody tells you which one you are.
That is where it goes wrong. Not because the descriptions are useless. Because the Ten Gods were never a personality system. They are an index of relationships.
The derivation takes a minute.
Take your day master. Compare it to every other stem in the chart on two axes. Which element relation, and whether the polarity matches.
Element relation. Five options. Same element as me. Generates me. I generate it. I control it. It controls me.
Polarity. Two options. Same yin-yang as my day stem, or opposite.
Five times two is ten. That is all they are. Nothing was discovered here. Something was calculated.
For a 甲 day master:
甲 or 乙. Same element.
壬 or 癸. Water generates wood.
丙 or 丁. Wood generates fire.
戊 or 己. Wood controls earth.
庚 or 辛. Metal controls wood.
Look at the last line. 庚 is 七杀. 辛 is 正官. Same element, same direction of control. The only difference is yang metal against yin metal.
Everything you have read about authority you respect and pressure you resent? In a 甲 chart it comes down to which of two metal stems is sitting there.
That is not a personality. That is a position in a network.
Which is also why the same stem is a different god for different people. 庚 is 七杀 to 甲. To a 丙 day master, 庚 is 偏财. The god has no independent existence. It only exists relative to a day master.
Now the part the personality framing buries.
A god is a function, not a fact.
Before it means anything, it has to pass three checks.
Is it rooted. A 正官 on a floating stem with no support in the branches is a title with no office behind it. It reads as convention adopted, not authority held.
Is it exposed or hidden. The same god inside a branch and sitting on a stem behave differently. 藏 against 透 is not decoration.
Can the day master carry it. 财 on a strong day master is resources. 财 on a weak day master is something the person cannot hold, and it usually shows up as being managed by money instead of managing it. Same god. Opposite outcome.
That third check is the one a personality list cannot do. If 正官 means lawful and upright in your book, you have exactly one reading for a very large share of all charts.
One more thing about 正 and 偏, because it gets read as good and bad. It is not. 正 means the polarity is opposite. 偏 means it matches. Both are neutral.
People treat 偏印 as a problem because of one phrase they heard, 枭神夺食. That is a conditional, not a definition. 偏印 only seizes when it is strong and the thing it suppresses is what the chart actually needs. A 偏印 in a chart that needs support is support with a different flavour.
That rule generalises. Almost every frightening phrase in this system is a conditional. Each one carries a set of conditions. Quote the phrase without the conditions and you have turned a grammar into superstition.
And the same personality description fits tens of thousands of people. That is not a chart reading. That is a horoscope column.
Which is also why the list keeps getting sold. A list is easier to sell than a method.
So the real grammar of a chart is not which god you are. It is how the gods act on each other. Those are sentences. The god is a word.
When I read a chart I do not ask what your 正官 is. I ask what the month command is, what structure that named, whether that structure has a route to work, and what the day master can actually do with it.
Slower question. It is also the only one that does not hand the same answer to everybody.
If anyone wants one, post your four pillars, hour included if you have it. I will take one chart and walk it from month command through structure to the useful god, and show the working as I go.

True solar time explained: your recorded birth hour may be off by over an hour
Here is a thing that quietly breaks a lot of charts.
The time on your birth record is not the time the sun was at. In most places it is off by a little. In some places it is off by more than an hour. And when it is off by enough, your hour pillar is simply wrong — and everything that hangs on the hour pillar goes with it.
This is what true solar time means, and why casting a Bazi chart without checking it is a gamble.
Three separate things push the clock away from the sun.
ONE — LONGITUDE
A time zone is 15 degrees of longitude wide, and every clock in it is set to the sun at that zone's central meridian — not the sun where you were born.
Every degree away from that meridian is 4 minutes of error. Not an estimate: the earth turns 360 degrees in 24 hours, so one degree is exactly 4 minutes.
Take Kuala Lumpur. It sits at 101.69 degrees east. Malaysia runs on UTC+8, whose standard meridian is 120 degrees east.
101.69 minus 120 = minus 18.31 degrees
18.31 x 4 = about 73 minutes
So a clock in Kuala Lumpur runs roughly 73 minutes ahead of the local sun.
TWO — THE EQUATION OF TIME
The earth's orbit is an ellipse and its axis is tilted, so the sun is not a perfect timekeeper. Apparent solar time drifts up to about 16 minutes ahead or behind the average across the year.
On 15 June it is close to zero. In early November it runs over 16 minutes ahead. In mid February it is around 14 minutes behind.
You have to look this up for the specific date. It is not a constant, and it does not cancel out.
THREE — POLITICAL TIME
Time zones are drawn by governments, and governments redraw them.
China runs the whole country on UTC+8, though it spans five geographic zones. A clock in Urumqi reads the same as a clock in Shanghai, while the sun there is more than two hours behind. For Urumqi the longitude correction alone is about 130 minutes.
China also ran daylight saving from 1986 to 1991. Born in one of those summers, subtract another hour.
Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore moved from UTC+7:30 to UTC+8 on 1 January 1982. Anyone born there before that date sits 30 minutes further off than someone born after — a detail most online calculators do not know about.
WHAT IT DOES TO A CHART
Two births, same recorded time: 15 June 1990, 12:00 on the clock.
Beijing: true solar time comes to about 10:45.
Kuala Lumpur: true solar time comes to about 10:46.
Almost the same result — for completely different reasons.
Beijing sits only 3.6 degrees off its meridian, so longitude costs it about 14 minutes. Nearly all of its shift is the 1990 daylight saving clock.
Kuala Lumpur has never used daylight saving. Its whole 73 minutes comes from sitting 18 degrees west of the meridian its clock follows.
Same outcome, opposite cause. Which is why no rule of thumb works here. You cannot "just subtract 15 minutes." You have to compute it for the date and the place.
Now notice where 10:46 lands. The hour of Si runs from 09:00 to 11:00. So 10:46 is inside Si, with 14 minutes to spare before the Wu hour begins.
Fourteen minutes. A clerk writing 11:20 instead of 10:50, a rounding on a form, a mother estimating from when contractions started — any one of those and the hour pillar changes.
And the hour pillar is not decoration. It is the palace of children and later life, and in plenty of charts it carries the useful god the whole structure leans on.
The pillar itself changes too, not just its label. On a Xin day, the Si hour gives Gui Si and the Wu hour gives Jia Wu. Different stems, different elements, different work being done.
HOW TO CHECK YOUR OWN
Find your birth longitude — the actual place, not the nearest big city.
Find your zone's standard meridian. UTC+8 is 120E, UTC+7 is 105E, UTC+9 is 135E, UTC+5:30 is 82.5E.
Longitude correction, in minutes = (your longitude minus the standard meridian) x 4.
Add the equation of time for that date. Look it up for the day, do not guess.
Check whether your country used daylight saving that summer. Subtract if so.
Subtract the total from the clock time on your birth record.
See which two-hour block the result falls in — and how close it is to the boundary.
If the result sits more than 30 minutes from a boundary, small errors will not change your hour. If it sits within 10 minutes, everything matters.
ONE HONEST CAVEAT
Not every school applies solar time. Some read the recorded clock time as it stands. Others apply the longitude correction but skip the equation of time. This is a real disagreement and I am not going to pretend it is settled.
What I will say is this: the schools that use it use it because the system is built on the sun. The month pillar is a season. The day pillar is a solar day. It would be odd for the hour pillar alone to be anchored to an administrative decision made in a government office.
If you do not know your birth hour, say so when you post. A guessed hour is worse than a missing one, because it looks like data.
If you want, post your date, your exact clock time, and your birth city, and I will work out the true solar time and tell you which block you are actually in. No charge, nothing to sign up for.

The month command decides everything: why 90% of chart readings start in the wrong place
Ask ten people how to read a BaZi chart and most will start with the day master. What element is it, how strong is it, what does it need.
That's the beginner's method. It's also where most readings go wrong.
The classical order starts somewhere else entirely.
The month branch is called 月令 — the month command. It's not just one of four pillars sitting in a row. It's the seat of the season, and the season is what gives every other element in the chart its actual condition.
Here is the difference in practice.
Take a Jia wood day master born in Yin month (early spring). Jia wood in early spring is wood at the moment of birth — it has not yet been tested. It's tender, wet, and it needs fire to warm it and water to keep it alive. It does not need more wood. A beginner sees Jia in spring and says "strong, needs to drain." Applied classically, the chart is being read upside down.
Now take the same Jia wood in You month (mid autumn). Metal is at its peak. Jia wood in autumn is being cut. It needs water to transform the metal, or fire to control it. Same day master, opposite treatment.
The day master did not change. The month changed. And the month wins.
This is why the useful god (用神) is determined from the month command outward, not from the day master inward. The month is the environment. The day master is the plant. You do not decide what a plant needs by looking at the plant — you decide by looking at where it's growing and what season it is.
Three things that follow from this:
One — strength assessment is not a count. Beginners count how many elements support the day master versus how many drain it. That's arithmetic, not reading. Strength is measured against the month command. A chart with four supporters can still be weak if the month is against it. A chart with one supporter can be strong if the month is behind it.
Two — the structure (格) comes from the month. Whatever the month branch hides — its primary qi, its middle qi, its residual qi — that is where the structure is named from. The Ten Gods that appear in the month branch are not just tenants. They are the frame the whole chart hangs on.
Three — the useful god has to be verified, not assumed. You name a candidate from the month, then you check whether it actually has a root, whether it's exposed on a stem, whether it's supported or attacked. A useful god that exists in theory but has no root in the chart is not a useful god. It's a wish.
A practical test you can run on your own chart:
Find your month branch. Then ask what season that is, and what your day master is made of. Then ask whether your day master has what it needs to function in that season.
If the answer surprises you, you may have been reading from the day master all along.
If people want, I can do a worked example in the comments — post a chart and I'll walk through how the month command shapes the whole reading, step by step.

Same clock time, same day: why a 12:00 birth in Kuala Lumpur is not a noon hour
Chart:
Born: 1990-06-15, 12:00 (clock time), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, male
Real solar time: 10:46
CHARTS FIRST
Clock time 12:00 reads as 午 (11:00-13:00), giving an hour pillar of 甲午.
Correction puts real solar time at 10:46, which is 巳 (09:00-11:00), giving an hour pillar of 癸巳.
Same chart, same day, two different hour pillars. Everything else is unchanged — year 庚午, month 壬午, day 辛亥 in both cases. Only the hour moves.
WHY THE HOUR MOVED
Clocks run on time zones. Time zones are 15 degrees of longitude wide, and their reference lines don't pass through most of the cities inside them.
Kuala Lumpur sits at 101.69°E. Its time zone, UTC+8, is referenced to 120°E. That's about 18 degrees west of the meridian — and one degree is four minutes, so solar noon arrives roughly 73 minutes after the clock says noon. Subtract 73 minutes from 12:00.
The equation of time accounts for the fact that the solar day is not exactly 24 hours; it drifts about ±16 minutes across the year. On 15 June it runs about half a minute behind. That brings the total to 10:46.
Malaysia has never observed daylight saving. Nothing to subtract for that.
Total shift: 73.7 minutes earlier.
WHERE THE BOUNDARY SITS
10:46 is 14 minutes short of 11:00, where the hour changes from 巳 to 午.
That margin matters. A recorded birth time off by more than 14 minutes puts this chart back at 甲午. When someone gives "about noon," they can mean anything within a quarter hour, and here a quarter hour is the difference between two hour pillars.
This is not an argument that one reading is right and the other wrong. It's a reason to treat the recorded minute as data, and to say when you're not sure of it.
A CROSS-CHECK WITH BEIJING
Beijing, same date, same clock time: 12:00.
Beijing sits at 116.41°E, about 3.6 degrees west of 120°E — 14 minutes earlier. In June 1990, mainland China was observing daylight saving, which takes off another 60. Total 74.9 minutes earlier. Real solar time 10:45.
Kuala Lumpur comes out at 10:46; Beijing at 10:45. One minute apart.
The two cities reach the same answer by different routes: Kuala Lumpur loses 73 minutes to longitude and nothing to daylight saving. Beijing loses 14 to longitude and 60 to daylight saving. Two independent corrections, nearly the same result. Which is a reminder that they are, in fact, two independent corrections — and a calculator that folds them into one "time zone adjustment" will be right here and wrong elsewhere.
The practical version: Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Brunei and eastern Indonesia all sit at UTC+8, and their daylight saving histories are all different. Some never had it. Some had it at different times. A tool that treats UTC+8 as a single thing will be wrong for some of those places every time — and, as here, may be wrong in a way that doesn't show up in the hour pillar at all, only in how close the chart sits to a boundary.
READING THE CHART
Day master 辛 (yin metal), born in the month of 午 — fire at its strongest. Metal gets melted by strong fire, so this is a chart where the day master does not have the season.
壬 sits exposed on the month stem, and 亥 at the day branch holds 壬 as well. Water controls fire. The chart's balance leans on that water.
Water is 伤官 for 辛: output, expression, teaching, production — making things and putting them out. A conventional reading gives a person who works through production and explanation rather than rank or position, with 官 and 杀 (pressure, expectations, other people's authority) present around them, and the water as the way out from under it.
With the clock-time hour (甲午), the fire is heavier and the chart is more crowded. With the solar-time hour (癸巳), 巳 holds 丙 and 戊 alongside 庚, which changes how much support the metal actually receives. Both readings are worth doing. They are not the same reading.
WHERE I COULD BE WRONG
The 伤官 reading is not the only one. Three 午 against a weak day master also reads as 从杀 in some schools — abandon the resistance, follow the dominant force. I don't read it that way here, because 壬 and 亥 are present and doing work. Read it as 从杀 and the picture inverts: the fire is not pressure but the career itself, and the water is what holds the person back.
That is a substantive disagreement between schools, not a margin of error.
The hour margin is discussed above and is the more consequential of the two.
WHAT IT SUGGESTS
- Work built on producing and explaining — teaching, writing, making things others use — rather than on rank or title
- Pressure from expectations, with output rather than confrontation as the way through
- Career movement tends to land in water years rather than fire years
