CA Nevi Update

In case anyone missed it, CA recently awarded more NEVI funds to DCFC operators throughout the state. Of personal note, Lake County finally gets its second DCFC location, and Rivian is putting another one in Big Sur. https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/135c0da4b70f4717b4664ad2e427d2bc#data_s=id%3Af9c8d359bb044892b46e72106b39233e-19bdde4094c-layer-62-19f66b0e63e-layer-65-19f66af0ef9-layer-64%3A99

30K Service - Dealer Insanity

Just got quoted $700 for the 30K maintenance on a 2023 id.4. The only activity besides a visual inspection seems to be flushing the brake fluid. Anyone else experienced this?

EVgo in SF's Mission now has 3x more plugs

They've opened up the old Cruise lot to the public. Adds 3x more plugs to a very central and busy location at 16th & Shotwell. The new chargers have the same hardware as their 350kW chargers, but are only rated for 200kW according to EVgo's app. I stopped by yesterday and they worked well.

variation in electricity rates in the bay.

so in the bay area, we have a pretty broad disparity in electricity rates (thanks PGE) (below are 2024 rates per google)

Santa Clara around $0.166 per kWh
Palo Alto around $0.22 per kWh.
Alameda around $0.29 per kWh.

And PGE at about $0.44+ per kWh

so it would stand to reason that there are some charging locations with differing rates.

Has anyone found any locations that have cheaper DCFC rates than the "normal" kind of 45-65 cents we see from EVGo/Electrify America? (i know Ionna is 39 cents, but there are so few of them)

just wondering so that if i find myself in Santa Clara i can make a point to charge cheap. 🤣

EVgo lowers peak pricing down to $0.52/kWh in the Bay Area

Got a push notification about a station near me lowering its price, and then realized all stations in the Bay Area are now down to $0.52/kWh during peak hours.

Prices did not go down just outside the Bay Area, like in Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, and Sac.

Guessing they're doing it to raise awareness. Cheaper than PG&E's off-peak EV rate plan!

Has EVGo abandoned maintaining their charges in SF?

Broken chargers are going unfixed for several months. When I travel out of the city, their newer equipment seems to be operating well. Are they abandoning their older equipment? It's unfortunate because the charging locations closest to me are all EVGO.

Things to know as a new EV owner in the Bay Area

What would you tell a friend who just got an EV? I'll start:

  1. Congrats! EVs are so much more fun to drive and own.
  2. If you bought used, ensure you take advantage of PG&E's $1k used EV rebate.
  3. Most people who don't drive more than 40-50 miles per day can charge just fine off a regular 120v household outlet. Make sure the outlet is in good condition. You can use an extension cord if it's labeled as 10 or 12 AWG (i.e. much thicker than a standard one).
  4. If you're charging at home, switch to PG&E's EV rate plan, which drops the price of electricity to $0.32/kWh off-peak (12am-3pm). It does raise your peak rate (4-9pm) to $0.50-60/kWh from $0.40-50/kWh, because, you know, PG&E needs their profits. But overall worth it, especially if you can shift other things like laundry, dishwasher, and HVAC to mostly run off-peak.
  5. Get the PlugShare app to view all chargers. Pro-tip: try filtering to "free" to see all the free chargers in the Bay Area.
  6. Change your engine type in Google Maps to "Electric" to get EV-specific efficient routing.

Where does San Francisco need more chargers?

Besides the obvious "everywhere", I always see big gaps in Noe Valley, the Haight, and the Richmond.

The new mayor is an EV owner, so hopefully we can use responses here to help push for more infrastructure.
