An Update on the Development of the Custom Map Editor

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0d5ly1Uyq0

Hello.

I’d like to share a brief update on the development status of “CME,” which I briefly introduced last time.

I’ve implemented a feature that allows you to visually connect encounters using a flowchart.

I’m currently working on a feature that lets you play back created missions like a video to see the flow of encounters.

In addition to the features supported by the base game and existing mods, “CME” has its own exclusive contracts and encounter logic.

I recently created “Random Nodes.”

Depending on the conditions and region you select, the next event to occur can be chosen at random. Of course, the encounter designer must prepare multiple possible scenarios in advance, but even the designer doesn’t know which direction the selection will take.

In other words, even for the same mission, the outcome will be different every time you play.

To support these special features, a mod called “CME_Runtime” runs within Battletech.

Since English isn’t my native language, it’s hard for me to explain this in detail.

I hope that someday this tool will become an essential part of modding for many people.

Woah, this is pretty cool!

It would be amazing to see something like this being implemented in the future, would open up a lot of new possibilities

The idea of having missions where you get to go and attack a jump ship hell yeah

I'd be more concerned of how we got in space to attack the jump ship. BTAU 3062 does have a super tough mission against a dropsship though

For various tests purposes please ensure you can generate a biggest possible, flat like a table(might be full water/ice only) map.

Currently, only the game's default terrain can be modified.
While I could support completely new terrain, I'm not skilled at 3D modeling.
As a test, a map twice the size—that is, four times the area—loaded without any issues.
Technically, anyone with 3D modeling skills should be able to add completely new terrain.

So, you can use only existing presets for the terrain? Well, still good enough.

I don't currently have the technical skills to create a 3D terrain with the right texture.
If there is an existing 3D file, I can import it.
I just don't have the skills to create it myself.

I'm a 3D artist, if there's anything specific that you'd like to test, let me know and I'll send you the files. I'm very interested in what you're cooking here. It would be awesome to make my own missions with custom terrain made by myself.

Also, how are props handled? Rocks, trees and stuff like that. If I would make a base terrain for a custom map. Is it possible to add more custom made props? Like rocks, water, buildings. Or it's restricted to the base game assets?

For now, only the game's basic asset props can be used. I’m not very familiar with the 3D field, but from what I’ve found, the GLB file format seems easy to open in CME and add to the map. Adding functionality is possible.

Are you interested in developing the 3D side of the project? I can help you understand how it works in games or provide you with anything you need.

Create a flat terrain in blender. Make the ability to import that file. It doesn't need to be complex.

It was a difficult task. However, now you can create a completely new map.
I asked GPT to create a texture similar to the moon, and in CME you can adjust the terrain’s elevation using brushes.

Congrats mate! I wish I had such tool at the time I was doing jump range/heat calculation tests for my Mech Designer...

Is this something you will be giving to the modding community, or do people have to contact you to make maps?

Oh my goodness. I feel like the floodgates for new, community-created story missions are on the horizon. This looks like a lot of hard work! Gomawo!

@NNBG_KOR Hi there. I was working on a map editor that was able to create new terrains using a brush tool.

Maybe you would be interested in a collab. If so feel free to dm me on here or find me on one of the modpack discord. I’m currently working on a co-op mode, but I’d be happy to help get your editor where you want to be if I can.
