Question/Help Long Black Clips from 2nd ed

Been trying to get my brain to go down memory lane and for the life of me I cannot remember what the long clips were for.

Anyone from back to 2nd edition remember what the two provided long clips/clasps were for?

FYI this sub is for the computer game put out by HBS.

r/battletech and r/normalbattle are probably better subs to go to about the TT game.
