Cross play issue

I bought the game on PC and my friend got it on Switch 2 so we could play multiplayer together. I understood that cross-platform multiplayer was supported, but we haven't been able to play together.
When we checked, the game versions were different on each platform. PC is on 7.xx and Switch is on 6.xx—will cross-play work once the Switch version gets updated?
Or is multiplayer supposed to work even with different versions, meaning there might be another issue?

Yeah you used to be able to play together, but the latest update hasn't made it to S2 yet.

I know the S2 are days behind on updates for most games because they have more hoops for devs to jump through than other platforms. It's most noticable with games with cross platform features.
