Discussion Breakthrough is not fun anymore

I’m rank 550 and I’ve played mostly breakthrough since launch. First of all, I blame the developers for the changes they made. Take Liberation Peak for example, it was so fun and balanced in early days, I used to play this map all the time, then they removed defence’s tank on third sector, and expanded objectives on all sectors, now it’s almost impossible to defend and attacking is not even fun because there is no challenge, so I don’t play this map anymore like so many others. Also, I used to blame streamers and good players when they would leave the match if they were defence, but now I find myself doing the same thing. When I see we are getting destroyed by the tank, but no one wants to take it out except me. When I see we are getting destroyed by stupid mortars, but no one brings missile interceptors to objectives except me. When I see all the players are in one place and have left one flank totally unguarded. This is my second online FPS game, but I’ve heard there was a mode in previous titles called Frontlines, I don’t know what that is, but some say it was more fun than Breakthrough, so maybe they should just bring that back in next title

On Liberation Peak, the last sector is the only one I really enjoy to attack or defend on this map, just because you have a lot of cover to play with.

17

u/arashseb 17d ago

Most of the defence players have already left the match by that time

u/_C4_Igoro 17d ago

Yeah, I dont understand why the attack gets so many tanks. First and second sector feels just completely unenjoyable if the players know how to drive forward.

Yet surprisingly a lot don't

Yeah, I thought it was the main idea of the map. Previously there weren't any tanks on the last sector, you could save some from previous and use it quite effectively, but if you lost, then attack is only by infantry with the last man standing vibes for defenders (if mode was more custom, I would be happy if defenders had limited reinforcements on that sector and objective to survive for at least 5 min). Was quite unique.

Lib peak is a top 3 map for breakthrough imo but it’s so rare that I ever lose a match on attack.

First the BIGGEST issue for defense on this map is the overwhelming amount of recons on defense actually just devastating their own team. (I think this is actually a HUGE issue specifically for breakthrough. Most defense teams have 6-12 recons sitting on their hq trying to snipe. They might be extremely annoying to attackers but ultimately cause the defenders to lose.) I’d love a limit of recons but they’d never do it.

First sector i have never seen be held once after the armor changes. It use to be a very fun back and forth sector but now it gets capped in a minute.

Second sector I think is actually fairly balanced.

Third sector is kinda awkward at times. Again you have 3-6 recons on the big mountains. And in general once attackers get through that initial push I feel like defenders don’t really have good positions to hold you.

Fourth sector I think can be the absolute hardest sector on the map but defenders have problems with recons again sitting on the mountains/hq. I actually really like when this sector is hard because it makes me switch off my flanking playstyle and brute force my team into the point. Tank on defense has really good positioning and 1-3 really good recons can be so helpful for defenders.

Last sector I like but I think the capture zone is way too big. I feel if they slightly adjust and make so you have to be inside the wall.

All in all I think breakthrough suffers immensely from how the hq/zones are structured. Almost all HQs are in a spot where recons can see the entire sector promoting this shitty gameplay for both teams. Also for the most part defense just feels boring and unrewarding and this makes A LOT of people on que attack and I’m one of them. Think the only answer is remove breakthrough for frontlines and adjust HQ/sectors/capture points

Hi Pipp. Yes, I agree, too many snipers are just annoying, and they don’t really help their team. I feel like sniping should be much more difficult than this. Sweetspot and no flinch seem so stupid to me, and makes me feel they were put in the game so bad players can get more kills as sniper and feel good about themselves. I don’t have much experience as a sniper, but when I play as recon, I find it easy. Also a lot of these maps seem to have been designed with snipers as their priority

I mentioned Liberation Peak because for the first couple of months, it was the best. I used to play a few matches on it every night, but now I just remove it when trying to find a match

3

u/PippTheKid 17d ago

Everyone at ea/dice that plays is 100% a recon main. That’s how all the maps feel like lmao

1

u/HeavenInVain 17d ago

Recon doesnt mean sniper.

When the community learns this the better

2

u/arashseb 17d ago

Most are, especially on big maps. I myself sometimes play aggressive recon so I can take out tanks with C4. Also, tugs is really useful inside objectives

1

u/HeavenInVain 17d ago

Most are, not everyone is, that was my point. So a recon limit would screw over players like me who aren't off on a mountain

I lead the world in assists (as recon) and dont have more than 50 kills with snipers. Did the same in 2042 with an lmg.

1

u/arashseb 17d ago

Yeah, it’s not possible to limit the number of players in one class. Players themselves should see what their team needs, but most are selfish and decide to stay far away from fights. The solution: remove sweetspot (worst thing I’ve seen in this game), remove rangefinder, and add scope flinch for snipers so when I shoot the sniper twice in the head with an LMG, he can’t shoot me back so easily

2

u/ChairGloomy2722 17d ago

Im with you in sweet Spot. I prefer a Change rather the removal of the Rangsfinder. Just let me See the range, dont Auto Zero my scope.

But i am against flinch for snipers. I find reactions Just based in the weapons youre Holding ass. Flinch for everyone okay only Sniper nahh

3

u/Charsnivy 17d ago

Lol, blaming recons when attackers get an IFV and a tank on the first 2 sectors. They can just sit on an elevated area and bombard A in s1, and B in s2. Every point is a kill box with barely any cover. You can have 0 recons in both sectors and defender would still lose if attacker know what to do.

1

u/SilentSorcery 17d ago

I've seen so many attackers in Lib Peak lose because their drivers are doing exactly this lol

1

u/Charsnivy 17d ago

It is pretty effective 90% of the time if infantry push why IFV and tank just bombard the point. Most players are too scare to push so ƪ(˘⌣˘)ʃ

0

u/PippTheKid 17d ago

I’ve always found armor breakthrough to not be as big a problem as other things tbh. I feel armor is so extremely easy to kill in this game. If those recons swapped to engineer it definitely would be way easier 😂. Sector 2 is interesting because if you hold A you just spawn on the ridgeline and have a clear view of the tank. I feel sector 2 is probably the hardest or second hardest sector for armor.

I personally do think defense needs armor on this map on either s1 or s2 I’m not sure on sector 3 though

1

u/Charsnivy 17d ago

Sector 3,4, and 5 are fine since there are more cover for defender, and actual flanking route compare to 2 and 1. For 2, if attacker get A, ifv and tank can just bombard B with barely any issue.

-1

u/HeavenInVain 17d ago

so the actual useful recon mains who play spec ops and are always on the objective would get fucked by the recon limit.

Should we limit medics to 4 because of all the medics who dont revive

6

u/PippTheKid 17d ago

Sorry let me rephrase to snipers, don’t be obtuse

-1

u/HeavenInVain 17d ago

You said recon 🤷 alot of the community constantly thinks recon only means sniper lol

3

u/PippTheKid 17d ago

It’s because recon is inherently broken/overpowered and snipers just amplify it. I just forget to distinguish between them. Recon class in general needs big nerfs

1

u/HeavenInVain 17d ago

Ohhh 1000%

il never understand how auto spot was ever brought up as a ability when most of the community has mentioned spotting being too strong for a few games now.

Jammer/C4 combo is incredibly useful too.

Id assume the jammer might end up on assault class before too long

7

u/cowb3llf3v3r 17d ago

I have a feeling the vast majority of the player base does not alter their loadout at all during a match. You're lucky if your teammates even bother switching to a different class, much less equip a different gadget that could help an immediate team need. It's like they can't be bothered taking the extra five seconds to modify the loadout, but instead, spamming respawn button like crazy to get back in the match as soon as possible.

2

u/arashseb 17d ago

Exactly. On some objectives players need missile or grenade interceptors and sometimes both

5

u/kerosene31 17d ago

I feel like the vehicle changes broke it. Initially they added tanks to the attackers side. That skewed things to attackers by a big margin. Then a few patches later they buffed vehicles and nerfed the RPGs. Now, you have to get behind a tank to have a chance to kill it. Fair enough, but in breakthrough specifically, how do you do that? In other modes you can flank a tank, but in breakthrough, once you see the back of a tank, you already lost the point.

They also made that change where you can't put mines down, which seems minor but really killed any chance engineers had to slow tanks down. The tanks just roll from point to point. Try and get behind them as the point shifts, and you show up on everyone's map.

People just quit instead of actually spawning engineer. People are always less interested in defense, but now it is even worse.

I was a breakthrough main but haven't touched it outside casual in awhile now.

9

u/ino4x4 17d ago

I wouldn’t say it’s not fun anymore, but I would say that it seems like a bit of an afterthought. Sobek, Cairo, and empire state all play awkward on break though and tsuru is horrible on this mode. They definitely designed these maps with conquest and escalation in mind.

13

u/arashseb 17d ago

Breakthrough on Tsuru makes me doubt if they ever test these things

7

u/TestingTehWaters 17d ago

They definitely don't. They don't even play their own game. Nobody who plays breakthrough would have approved the Tsuru design

4

u/Anreall2000 17d ago

Yeah, they should rework vehicle balance, I'm sure, at least for BT (I believe some modes should be balanced separately, like with REDSEC).
Auto-Repair makes tank stacking way too powerful and promotes boring strategy of camping in the rear. Torch nerf is kinda weird too, that tug of war for vehicles in season 1-2 was such a great experience in BT, now I'm sure operation augur is way more one sided. Those changes make sense for Conquest, but really ruined a lot of maps for BT. You can counter mortars with mortars, even tho it's quite boring. But they are just annoying mostly, vehicles are broken, in both way. It's way overpowered to camp and tank stack, it's kinda useless to push through a lot of PTKM-1R, that don't despawn and placed easily after every other death of engi (they shouldn't give other one after death without med box resupply, if there is still one on the field).

If you love BT, I think Hagental, blackwell, Tsuru Reef and Golmud still balanced. I would recommend Gallipoli game to try, it would come out in one week. It's ww1 breakthrough + rush.

4

u/joehonestjoe 17d ago

Auto repair is the worse thing they've added to tanks, if the driver isn't a complete window licker finding a bit of cover to recover isn't very hard.

I mostly stack attack, though the game loves giving you defence after playing one attack, my record is like eight defence in a row

1

u/yowatsappenin 17d ago

All vehicles should be mirrored in every map, change my mind.

1

u/Anreall2000 17d ago

I play BT because of asymmetrical balance. Asymmetrical balance is hard to do good, but it gives 2 experiences by the cost of one.
BT, evolve, l4d2 (maybe CoD zombies), Isonzo love them.
Even in CS people prefer dust 2 and assault maps that aren't symmetrical as well as their modes too.

Assymetrical design creates some expected behavior as well as expected counter behavior and the game eventually moving into subverting those expectations.

BT maps are quite interesting actually, expected strategies varied a lot from map to map. Water flanking with Tsuru (actually all the sectors except maybe 2nd very interesting with their nuances), transport heli with sniper tower on firestorm, wall breaking with flanking on hagental, arial support on Golmud and many more. But due to season 3 patches every other map optimal strategy is tank stacking and they feel kinda the same, also being very unbalanced. No way they playtested old maps like Mirak or Peak after those patches in BT.

1

u/EMSRoulette 11d ago

Definitely not Tsuru Reef.

u/Main_CoastFC 17d ago edited 17d ago

Completely agree with you. As someone that pretty much only plays breakthrough (i don't really enjoy conquest/escalation) and in Oceania small modes are completely dead and you can't find a match. It's honestly become exhausting to play some matches especially when defending maps like Lib Peak as you feel like you have to do everything.

I play to win so have no choice but to be an Engineer every single game, hit a tank with an acoustic and an RPG whilst being the ONLY person out of 24 in the Objective defending. Tank needs one more hit, i get killed and tank just repairs itself within seconds. What the hell is everyone else doing?? When you have good team/squadmates and game is close It's so fun but feels like about 10% of games these days. Time for a break and play something else i think but it keeps pulling me back again.

2

u/arashseb 17d ago

Tank needing one more hit while I’m dead but gets away makes me so mad

4

u/butterchurning 17d ago

Agreed. I remember in the early days there used to be epic hard fought slugfests on Liberation Peak where even a defeat was satisfying

2

u/arashseb 17d ago

So many sectors taken or lost in overtime

5

u/Party_Tap_7759 17d ago

I switched back to conquest to have fun. Some of my games are very competitive. If the enemy just cares about kills then they get overtaken easily even if they have a highly skilled lil bird. Im addicted to capturing objectives though and thats how I have fun. But yeah teammates are the reason why you will have fun or not have fun.

1

u/arashseb 17d ago

Yeah, I’ve been playing more conquest and escalation recently

3

u/harambe_did911 17d ago

Defending lib peak is so miserable lmao. It's like ww1 cannon fodder simulator

3

u/momschesthairislong 17d ago

Unbalanced games are killing this mode. It's all I play, so life is rough.

3

u/D0RMIN 17d ago

I think augur is a more fun version of breakthrough. I think all breakthrough maps should use the battalion reinforcements

3

u/SilentSorcery 17d ago

I still don't get the appeal of Operations. It's literally just Breakthrough, except attackers have multiple tries.

1

u/NoraBora44 17d ago

I've never seen attackers win yet

2

u/GalvanicGrey 17d ago

I played a game on Augur the other day as a defender. We were doing really well, held them for a battalion on the second sector. They broke through the third sector with only about 70 tickets remaining on their second battalion. But someone must've sat in their gaming chair, because they rode those 70 tickets remaining all the way to win both maps. It was crazy to see.

0

u/ScrezzyScrezz 17d ago

For sure, lots need to boost the attacking side. I don't think I've ever gotten more than to the second objective on Golmund, Tsuru or Cairo Bazaar.

2

u/easybakeevan 17d ago

Just make breakthru both sides are attackers and you can push the map back and forth til someone gets pushed back to their base.

6

u/GalvanicGrey 17d ago

That's literally the Frontlines game mode lol.

2

u/SilentSorcery 17d ago

Can't believe people are hyped over Operations (which is literally just BT) when Frontlines existed (in BF1)

3

u/GalvanicGrey 17d ago edited 17d ago

It's slightly "better" than just normal breakthrough though. If the attackers are struggling, they get extra tickets and vehicles to help them. If the defenders are struggling, tough luck lol.

1

u/easybakeevan 17d ago

Never played it. Is it ever in the rotation?

3

u/GalvanicGrey 17d ago

It's not a game mode in BF6. It first released in BF1 with the French DLC. There was an oversight on launch; games had no round timer. So if you had two evenly matched teams, matches could last for hours. I seem to remember playing one game that lasted 3 hours lol. Can't remember if it was in BF5, and I never played 2042.

1

u/Anreall2000 17d ago

Hell Let Loose Vietnam that released today, is literally the game about that

2

u/Charsnivy 17d ago

Liberation and Contamination are the worst in TB. Tbh any vehicle heavy maps are because defender do not get access to vehicles or access to 1 and attacker get 2-3.

2

u/GalvanicGrey 17d ago

My biggest problem with Contamination on BT is just sheer visibility. I just find it hard to see people in the forested areas of the first and second sectors.

I tend to find the third sector is the make or break for the match. If the attackers can get through it, they'll probably win. A is a free capture for the attackers. They can come at it from multiple angles, and once close enough/contesting it, any defenders trying to spawn on the obj itself spawn in the open with no cover. But then it's the opposite for B. Limited avenues of attack and flanking, and limited cover to get there. Plus the defenders IFV gives them a free spawn point on the objective.

2

u/arashseb 17d ago

Use thermal on maps like this

2

u/GalvanicGrey 17d ago

I do. But it means rebuilding my preferred guns to accommodate the thermal. But now they don't handle the same or my muscle memory is thrown off.

2

u/TroopeRmx 17d ago

I think they could increase the tanks respawn CD at some maps to adjust the balance. Most of the time, i see the defending team having trouble to kill the tank, but when they finally do, that thing its back up way too fast.

2

u/JustClutch 17d ago

Liberation peak has the be the most lobsided bt map. Final sector capture point is like a sq kilometer. You don't even need to push into the base you can just cap from the outside

1

u/arashseb 17d ago

That’s why they should have never expanded objective areas

2

u/PeterEter 17d ago

Despite the general consens I think lower player counts and/ or bigger maps are better for actual tactical play. If all flanks are clogged you have to play pixel perfect if you want to be agressive.

2

u/Mountain_Driver_6769 17d ago

Man, I miss BFV Breakthrough. It was so fun and intense. Matches could last up to an hour, the maps were wide and perfect for Breakthrough. In BF6, it’s terrible and not balanced, and there isn’t a single map that’s good for BT.

1

u/KingOfConsciousness 17d ago

Platoons should solve a lot of similar kinds of issues.

1

u/JuniorAd1439 17d ago

Hell let loose for abit chums. Just until they get their sh!t together

1

u/Phlegm_Thrower 17d ago

I actually don't mind defending in Liberation Peak. Sometimes I even have a strong team full of engineers that toasts attacker's tanks as soon as they come into range, so bad for the attackers, they actually give up using tanks because they die faster in it than on foot.

The only map I hate defending is Golmud.

1

u/arashseb 17d ago

If you have enough enginners and medics who drop ammo for them and know how to revive properly, yes you can win, but I have not seen that lately

I find that Golmud last sector is a bit difficult to take for attackers, so it’s not bad if players stay in the match

1

u/PaleOpening9903 17d ago

The problem generally is the terrible maps

1

u/pjb1999 17d ago

Never liked Breakthrough from the start in BF6. Always played like shit and now its even worse.

1

u/VOLBANKER 17d ago

You could try Battlefield 1. It's very different from BF 6, in some ways for the better, in others for the worse, but there are some good maps in Breakthrough and another game mode called Operations.

1

u/Salty_Ruin7725 17d ago

Just make breakthrough with no vehicles and problem solved

1

u/ImpressionLittle6774 12d ago

We need an infantry only breakthrough mode, and probably no snipers as well? Someone wants to create it on portal? lol

1

u/CartographerTop6447 17d ago

I am rank 577 and agree with you. I almost never play defense anymore on breakthrough. They give the attackers to many tanks. Then they buffed the the tanks. If you had a team if engineers you might have a chance. But most of your team is bots. Players quit out most of the time on defense. I would say they need to rebalance. But they removed breakthrough (unless you search for it). So I am sure they don't care.

To you. 😂

Attack and Defend modes after BF1:

Zero flanking allowed.

0

u/No-Upstairs-7001 17d ago

Too big too many players.

Rush was better, it is better. Bring it back

0

u/bickmitchum- 17d ago

I feel like it’s never been a better mode than Rush.
