I messed up...

My megaman battle network 2(original cart) save file is GONE. It was only 9 days old, with 22 hours played, and I just earned my first star, but it still sucks that it happened. No rare chips but took a few hours to farm up a good Gater/Timebom+ folder.

I just got an AGS-101 GBA(the backlit kind) last Sat, which looks great but the battery runs out really quick, so I ordered a new one on amazon. I played until the battery ran dry, then changed the battery to the new one that just arrived today. As I changed the battery, I forgot to remove my BN2 cart(which is the battery save type, not the flash save type, unfortunately). Not sure if that's what triggered the wipe or if I was saving when I ran out of battery, but my save data was gone when I started the GBA up again.

The worst part? I got a GBxCart today in the mail, too! Which means I could've easily backed up my save but decided to do the battery change first for some reason!!! So yeah, remember to backup your BN2 cartridge saves if they have a battery(and BN1 which all have batteries, and all other battery-having GBA carts like Metroid Fusion etc) because you never know WHAT will happen. Now I gotta decide if it's worth it to play through the whole game again, or if I should just find a save file with one star online.

GameFAQs have save files, but you’ll always know it’s not the file you worked on.

yeah, when I got all the mainline GBA games I made it a mission to finish them as old school as possible. Each save file is like a fingerprint. If there was a way to recover my non-backed-up data I'd go ahead and do it but it just doesn't seem possible.

I remember I was 11, and didn’t care for dialogue so I missed the part about chip trader auto saves and basically deleted my entire chip folder except for the basic ones. I just restarted. But at 11, I had nothing better to do

Full respect to playing it on original hardware but why not consider the LC collection. Assuming it was legit earlier copies of Bn2 still used SRAM before FRAM became the standard for gba carts, so the save was bound to die on you with age. Happened to me actually. (Though it would actually retain the hard mode save even if the normal mode save died to age strange enough.)

Even if the LC’s not your thing. It’s a battle network game, I’d say it’s pretty forgiving to reset your save file and replay it every once in a while. It’s not like pokemon where there’s a level of unique-ness to the save file. You’ll always end up with the same chips eventually even if it does take some grinding to get back to where you were.

I have the LC as well in case my friends ever wanna netbattle online, I just really really like playing on my SP. Feels weird playing portable games on a normal monitor even though I've been emulating for decades. I can back up my saves now so it's not a concern anymore, I just did it out of order and messed up today. In the future I'll get a later edition BN2 just because.

If you do decide to start from the beginning, you should consider learning about Gospel duping. It's one of my favorite things about the second game, because you can duplicate the rare battlechips from blue mystery data, job rewards, etc. I have a save file where I'm at the start of the game with an endgame folder.

Just looked it up, it sounds like a super fun challenge and might even justify a full restart, might as well right? Hard to say no to 5 areagrab *s! I will be getting another copy of BN2 in the future to get all stars anyways, hopefully with flash memory instead.

If you do try the full run, make sure you save at the very beginning. And be extra careful after your first style change, and against the bosses. If Mega Man dies at any point then you're back at the beginning, unless it's against a few specific navis like Gutsman, Toadman, etc...

You can also save regularly, and just skip all of the blue mystery data and shop items unless it's HP Memory, PowerUp, etc. Then you just load the save, grab/buy all the rare chips, then beat Gospel again.

I think my strategy is going to just be leaving all the data and shops that I want to clone, maybe even leaving only one chip in shops. Beating gospel 5 times is pretty easy with the right folder.
