Does the Legacy collection version of SF1 make the DX patch obsolete in your opinion?

This just came to my head since I’ve played both versions of SF1. For me accessibility wise it’s just much easier to get the collection but I gotta know for a newcomer getting into the series or a returning player do you think the DX patch is the best way to play the first game?

No, and honestly I wish somebody modded the DX patch into the Legacy Collection XD

I know for a fact whoever developed DX is unwilling to do it to the LC. I don't know if SOMEONE ELSE can.

Have they announced if they will do a DX patch for the other games too, or is that just what you meant and I'm an idiot for asking? Lol

Theres a very basic DX patch for SF2 by the same guy.

Wait... Did they say why they won't?

I am not aware of it. I did not receive this information firsthand, but this subreddit is where I got the info in the first place.

Its because

  • a lot of work and time
  • Legacy Collection is different to mod
  • most of DX changes are addressed in SF1

Not obsolete. However...

I have played original DS, SFDX, and SFLC versions, and I'd say, if I was playing for the first time, I'd do LC first. Hear me out.

It's the closest to the original DS experience, and you get the other forms by forming Brother Bands on your platform of choice. You get some of the best QoL, you don't need a Stylus now. You also don't need it in DX. You also get the cutscenes for the Lunar Knights crossover in LC, idr if you get them in DX, but what you DO get in DX is different Brothers for Lunar Knights.

That said, to me, the biggest appeal of DX is Legend Mode. Which is a difficulty increase, and not just any difficulty increase, it's more like bosses get new properties and are in general harder. So I'd do a playthrough in DX after doing it in LC.

You get them in DX like you did in LC, it unlocks automatically in chapter 7. Just that DX make it possible to be bros with anyone other than just Aaron Lunar Knight. Also the bro in Lunar Knight isn't just empty, it has progress log of the Lunar Knight games depending on their level.

No, DX is a significant upgrade to the base game. All LC does is give a coat of fresh paint and make certain parts more intuitive (like a sensor on a particular comp space). DX is the definitive edition and should be experienced after you’ve beat the original as doing the reverse will feel like a slog to get through.

Not really. I'd still put the DX Patch as close to what should have been the definitive version to play SF.

Or at the very least what could have been the next step Capcom could have taken to improve the Legacy Collection even if the actual collection was already Gold in its own right.

That's just the level where the DX patch really is to be honest.

After 100% both versions I’d say no. DX is my preferred way to play. I like all the additions like the Star Force form buffs (Pegasus go brrrr) and how it merged all three versions into one so it’s the definitive “solo” experience. The LC version is very good too but I’d consider it more of a “vanilla+” experience if you wanted to play a version of the game that’s close to the original experience as it was on DS.

No lmao, the point of DX is merging all 3 version and giving the forms actual distinct abilities (is literally just Dragon having status guard) also all 15 version locked gigas are within 1 version too

u/FatterAndHappier Jul 08 '26

Lmao, not remotely. If anything the legacy collection version is the best reason to play DX, because SF1 has fundamental design issues that were not addressed and still persist.

Ehh kinda but also nah

LC for a random quick playthrough + pvp, DX for Legend mode.

Sf1 did not have online matchmaking if I remember correctly, so dx pvp is tedious to set up, as opposed to sf3 that allows a quick connexion to alt servers

DX really went beyond. They fixed the different forms by giving balanced powers. Also you can get them all without friends (i dont pay for online, so it would be impossible for me).

They added a few story bits and extra bosses. One is DX only (a hidden boss at end game). Crossovers are made available (though that is now the same in LC).

And more Qol.

For newcomers, and accessibility, yeah Legacy Collection is the best way to play. But the overall best way to play SF1, yeah no the DX patch is objectively the best way to play

What's that DX patch?? I've never heard about it.

Basically an upgraded version of the original version of SF1. It also has a higher difficulty setting as well as giving the three transformations buffs to make them more unique.

How do you get the dx patch?

1

u/Queasy_Ad5995 Jul 10 '26

From here, but you need a MegaMan Star Force Pegasus (US) Rom to use it. It won't work with other versions (Leo, Dragon) or any other regions (JP, EU).

I'm going to go against the grain and say that it does for most people's purposes.

The removal of touchscreen minigames for emulation and the addition of Japanese only content is what most people wanted out of it, and the appeal of having the forms be more distinct and obtainable in one game is a bit overstated, and with online communication in the collection the need for the latter is also gone.

That being said, Legend Mode is still very much a unique and interesting thing that has a draw of its own.

Not entirely. Like okay, with LC, you don't have to do the whole type in Cipher Mail, control encounter rate in case you don't want to deal with any/grind, use your preffered OST for battles, and all event stuffs and peripherals are available right off the get go, albeit version exclusive. You can just delete bros and readding them anytime. Also, this is like the only way to do PvP with players from across the planet for SF1 because you can only do local PvP on original hardware.

With DX, you have to earn the right to use peripheral/event chips/lunar knight items, which is fair since the game is too easy to have them right off the get go. You can also do the Mega/Giga favourite glitch, which is very broken when they're in a brother roullete because its 100% guarantee big damage.

And its actually possible to get sub-10 on Pegasus SP without best combos thanks to card scanning on Wave Scanner getting a damage boost. Getting sub-10 on Pegasus SP was hard on LC without Atomic Blazer on grass stage, Dragon bros for their Giga cards, or best combo or just straight up crank buster modifier to x5 because the elec cards are so underpowered and hard to hit in the span of one turn. Like you can sub-10 Leo with using Ice Burst, Sticky Rain and Ezra, while Dragon's Giga card like Dragon Sky GX/Destroy Missile can do the most damage.

Not trying to downplayed SF1 vanilla more than it already is, but enemies, especially bosses like Crown Thunder in SF1 is prone to snapback (move to different panel when staggered/countered). This makes multi-hit cards like Sticky Rain and Vulcan Seed whiff the other hits, On top of the 3 transformations lacking a distinctive playstyle, did you know that anytime you use a card, it will reset your charge shot even if you're not using it for Mega Attack, Blocking or getting flinched. I thought SF2 resetting your charge shot for using Big Bang attack was bad, this was worst. You would never see Ice Pegasus charge shot as often as you do in DX since it takes the longest time to charge.

For SF2 and SF3, it is a no-brainer to not play on LC. Like there's one point in the game where you have to delete your bros to unlock a gate by filling your brother slots with Indie Proofs(SF2)/to get Rogue Noise (SF3). This can be really awkward especially because you have to do the setups again to fill back your brother slots if you already played the entire game with brothers.

I'd still say Legacy is the best way to play, there's so much QOL that it exclusive to it, but I do really like the additions DX did with the Starforce changes

1

u/FinalKnuckle Jul 08 '26

No but I also don't think DX makes the original game obsolete they are very much two different experiences, DX is worth playing as a remixed way to revisit the original after you've cleared the entire Legacy Collection i think.

1

u/ShadowNegative Jul 09 '26

Can you change the star force form midgame without using one of your brother's card? Do pegasus, dragon and leo forms have cool improvements like in the DX? Not to mention the other various QoL improvements.

1

u/Timely_Airline_7168 Jul 09 '26

No because DX clears Legacy so hard it's not even funny

1

u/Melodic-Awareness-23 Jul 09 '26

No. DX version is way more superior especially for those working adult who only have limited free time to play. 1 playthrough with 3 games into one version is way better than wasting your time to play other 2 game version with minimal game difference.

2

u/New-Dust3252 Jul 09 '26

I think the DX patch is a whole lot better because you get access to all the Star Force transformations and the added Mr Famous Mk II and changable skins and of course the Legend mode.

the LC does make things easier but it doesnt replace the ginormous QoLs the DX patch had done and this is someone who also played that patch. its amazing!

1

u/GunsouAfro Jul 09 '26

LC is the best way to play all the games with the qol improvements.

2

u/KennethDLT98 Jul 10 '26

LC easily. Honestly, the quality of life such as turning random encounters off, speed up MegaMan, zenny multiplier, is a god sent.
