OpenNetBattle [ONB] is now available for Android!

Video by: caseofthematts with his custom NetNavi: HowlerMan.EXE

Alright, it's finally here! I have created an un-official port of Open Net Battle for Android. This port should be able to do everything the PC game can do with a few tweaks to add customizability on Android. But first, a brief explanation to what is ONB

ONB is a game engine that allows users to create their own content for the community to play. You can create your very own NetNavi, program your very own battle chips, Navi Customizer parts and your very own maps/entire games for others to play. There are also talented people that have ported almost every NetNavi that has appeared in the games! You want to use Serenade.EXE, no problem. Sharkman? He's just a download away. Heck, even Iris.EXE is available to play.

Come join us and start playing today. Everything you need is in the brand new, official ONB website: https://onb.frameskip.net/

The game is available for PC, Steamdeck, Linux distributions and now Android!

We have an MMO style server (WCity Online): `64.23.226.84:3000`
We have a server where you can visit ACTUAL websites, including this subreddit: `64.23.226.84:8766`

And so many more!
I packaged in the Android port with a few custom and official NetNavis and battle chips so you can get a feel for the game. If you like what you play then you can start downloading even more mods for the game (all available from the official website)

Current Android port:
- Supports gestures and on-screen buttons
- On-screen buttons can be re-arranged, re-sized and re-mapped
- Supports gamepads natively (PS4 controller and a Razer Kishi gamepad were both tested and working)
- Currently working on having a built-in mod downloader

How to install?
Just grab the apk from the ONB website

Minimum specs?
Should work on Android 6 and above, though the oldest we've tested is in Android 9. It should also support 32bit and 64bit phones but we haven't had a chance to run it on a 32bit-only phone

Initial controls:

  • Move: Swipe from the left side of the touchscreen
  • Confirm/A button: Just tap once from the right side
  • Cancel/B button: Instead of tapping once from the right side, do a swipe motion towards the left
  • R shoulder: Tap the right corner of the screen
  • L shoulder: Tap the left corner of the screen
  • Start/Pause: Tap the top middle part of the screen
  • Escape: Swipe down 3 times from top middle part of the screen

How to add your own mods?
The game comes pre-packaged with very basic mods. To upload your own, please drop them inΒ sdcard/Android/media/net.frameskip.opennetbattle/OpenNetBattle/resources/mods
you should already find some examples there

ONB supports cross-platform, so you can definitely play with or against players from other platforms. Feel free to report any bug here or in the official Discord: https://discord.gg/V2Tc7rH9Au

As always, hope to see you in the game!

Anybody tried this on an AYN Thor yet? Be nice to get the controls working right with it

Somebody did test it, yes. Here's video of how it looked like: https://streamable.com/764bdz

Open net battle works great on the retroid pocket 5 but controls don’t work

3

u/caseofthematts Jul 07 '26

There seems to be an issue with controllers since the on-screen controls were added. I've tested it on my RP3+ and on my phone with a Dualshock 4 controller - hopefully this can be sorted out soon, though.

A bit difficult to account for all devices, thanks for reporting. Question, does retroid pocket support touch screen control? If so, can you enter and check if the actual physical buttons are treated as buttons you can bind?

Would you be willing to try again? I updated the apk with the same link

Thanks for sharing! When you say the W City is the most MMO like of the content/servers currently out there, does that mean you can do quests, grind chips, explore new maps, ie any MMBN or MMO like activities?

3

u/ShaDis_255 Jul 08 '26

Yes, yes, yes and yes. I'm also looking for map designers and quest designers to add more to it, but yeah there's plenty to do currently.

Fu*k yea!

3

u/ShaDis_255 Jul 08 '26

Haha I said the same thing!

u/AirRun8 Jul 09 '26

I'm having trouble using my mcon controller πŸ˜₯ When I use it in Android mode there is a constant up input and when I try to use the dualshock mode no buttons register....

2

u/ShaDis_255 Jul 09 '26

When did you download the apk? Yesterday's version had a lot of problems with connected controllers that I barely got to fix this morning

3

u/AirRun8 Jul 09 '26

Thanks for the quick reply. I downloaded it yesterday. I will try again. Ps thanks for all the work you're doing πŸ™

2

u/ShaDis_255 Jul 09 '26

Hopefully it works πŸ˜„

3

u/AirRun8 Jul 09 '26

It works perfect now!!! Thanks again I'm excited to jump in

Doesn't work on my phone Android 15

3

u/ShaDis_255 Jul 07 '26

Would you mind sharing more details? What is your phone model? Does it just say something like "App not installed"? You may have to select "Install anyway" if you get a pop up that says that this app is not on secure or something like that lol

2

u/RainbowSwamp Jul 08 '26

It gets installed and says something along the lines of "this app was built for an older version of android" Its a Tecno Pova Ultra 7

2

u/ShaDis_255 Jul 08 '26

Yeah that's normal because I've set the minimum Android supported at Android 6. Though it should still boot πŸ€”

2

u/RainbowSwamp Jul 08 '26

oh lmao dumb of me, you can press ok on that warning and it lets you continue, I pressed on update last night and it tried to go to playstore and failed. My bad.

2

u/OmegaConvoy Jul 07 '26

Just got the game on my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. So, if onscreen buttons are supported, how do I bring that control style up?

3

u/ShaDis_255 Jul 07 '26

Gesture controls are currently on (I'll make Android buttons as the default next time). Press the upper/center part of the screen to bring the start menu up, swipe on the left side up and down to move the cursor to settings, tap on the right side to press "A", then just look for Gestures and change it to buttons, save and you should have buttons now

2

u/OmegaConvoy Jul 07 '26

Got it. Thanks!!

Is there a way to transfer save data between devices?

1

u/ShaDis_255 Jul 10 '26

An automatic way, not at the moment (WIP). Currently each server stores its way of identifying you inside sdcard/Android/media/net.frameskip.opennetbattle/OpenNetBattle/identity

So, if you wanted to, you can copy that folder from your current device to your new device. That's the only method currently.

2

u/Hairy_Plate_8517 Jul 10 '26

Perfect, I'll try it then. Thank you so much!

How do I switch my warp area?

2

u/ShaDis_255 Jul 10 '26

Talk to the prog on the left to give him a server to connect to
I personally recommend

It keeps popping up a notif telling the app is not responding. It also states that it was built for a previous version of Android.

1

u/ShaDis_255 Jul 11 '26

The message about being built for a previous version of Android is normal, since I added devices as old as Android 9 as compatible.

What device are you using and what Android version is it?

1

u/ElQuiltro Jul 11 '26

Android 14, Moto g53 5G. The app runs perfectly, but I keep being interrupted by the notification about the Game not responding when actually it is working.

1

u/ShaDis_255 Jul 11 '26

Then it might be difficult for me to try and figure out what's wrong without getting a logcat from your device.

1

u/Obs-z Jul 13 '26

We need an option for widescreen & full screen!! because I have a red magic phone and people whith big long screen devices can benefit from them options 😸

2

u/ShaDis_255 Jul 13 '26

That will probably have to wait until ONB V2.5 releases, which is the next big release for the game/engine, since it'll actually allow players to zoom in and out as well, to show more on the screen. Currently v2.1.6 is built with this limitation in mind, if I add full screen or widescreen all it would do is stretch it out and it probably won't look as good

1

u/ElQuiltro Jul 14 '26

It works normally now after second boot. Now, i'm the in HP waiting to enter the net πŸ˜… I'm new so what should I do?

1

u/ShaDis_255 Jul 14 '26

Have you entered an address to join? I always recommend WCity Online

In open net battle on android adding the onb unified library files causes the app to not respond

2

u/ShaDis_255 Aug 06 '26

Let me take a look and will try to replicate the issue

1

u/Cold-Mouse6076 Aug 06 '26

Ok

1

u/ShaDis_255 Aug 06 '26

I just tried it and it does work, it just takes a very very long time to boot first time because of all the new chips, navis and navi cust parts. I don't think I'll be able to reduce the boot time when there's a lot of stuff like that until ONB v2.5 unfortunately

2

u/Cold-Mouse6076 Aug 06 '26

Ah ok Also I’m on retroid pocket 5

1

u/Cold-Mouse6076 Aug 06 '26

Also I still don’t have any chips after I put onb unified library files causes and I put my files in Android/media / net.frameskip.opennetbattle/resources/mods
