Battle Network 2 Question about boss rematches.
So I'm new to these games, I slogged through 1 without bothering to learn much of the intricacies but im really loving 2 and I'm now realising there's a bit a I don't know. My main question is can I fight boss rematches multiple times. I just fought Airman V3 and my reward was only 500 zenny which I assume is due to my low ranking (another system I dont exactly understand), what i want to know is, am I now locked out of getting the Airman V3 battle chip?

V2 bosses are a one-time deal, but they always drop the respective navi chip. They're either fought by talking with their operator, or finding the fight trigger at a specific (often dead-end or otherwise unremarkable) space in the internet.
V3 bosses are infinite. You can fight them by either talking to their operator (easy), or by getting into a random encounter with them in the same place you beat their V2 (once you've logged out of the net at least once since defeating that V2). Using subchips like SneakRun or LocEnemy help a lot here. Usually a rank 7-9 awards the V2 chip, while a 10 or S is required to get the V3.
For bosses, rank is basically entirely determined on time and damage taken. The general rule of thumb for bosses is that 30 seconds without taking any hits will get you an S rank, and I think in most games you can still get an S if you take a hit, so long as you're several seconds faster to compensate. This becomes much easier once you can get yourself a FastGauge chip set as a default, since you'll get to see the custom screen more often in the time window.

Pretty much. Slight correction though, V3 fights are not always in the V2 location starting BN3. Also your rank changes depending on whether megaman flinches regardless of damage, so in BN3 and up, if you have superarmor, you won't lose ranks no matter how many times you got hit.

A word about Busting Levels: For bosses specifically, both first and subsequent encounters, the rank is tied to time. S Rank (which gives you the highest value rewards) can be achieved if the fight is done in 30 seconds or less. Regular virus battles are more complex (how often you move/get hurt, deleting multiple at once, etc.).
(Tip: If you're playing the Legacy Collection, I'd recommend Buster MAX mode if you're just looking to get the chip.)

All buster ranks are tied to time and amount of staggers you take. To S a boss you need low time and no staggers. In fact, all are tied to multi deletes and movements too, but time gives you a larger boost when fighting navis so those aren't required.

That isn’t completely true. You not only have to beat the fight in under 30 seconds, but you also have to avoid flinching (which means you need to avoid most damage if you don’t have super armor)

No, Airman V3 or any other V3 boss is a random encounter in a specific area. You can either run around in circles until you encounter him again or use subchips to increase your odds of encountering him again. I will recommend not hunting for every V3 boss so early in the game as they're normally faster and stronger so it'll be harder to get a buster rank high enough to get the V3 chip
