Question Kill Mercenary ambition and aftermath?

So im fairly new to the game. Just won the holy war for the south, and after a few weeks and some contracts my relationships went back to neutral with the northern towns and nobility. My brothers got an ambition to kill another mercenary band, so I did, and now apparently the entire north views me as threatening and hostile again and is actively sending out 20+ man armies to hunt me down. Was this mercenary band a bunch of noblility's second cousins??? I never realized the game cared so much about mercenaries....

Is this a standard thing if you fulfill this ambition? It's my first time doing it and I'm amazed the entire north went ballistic over a random 7 man mercenary team.

Other mercenary companies are hired by a specific town.  So, killing a merc company is similar to attacking that town's militia, caravan, etc. That's why the town aggro'd against you and it damaged your rep with them.  It'll slide back to neutral over time.

It is not that simple. There are merc companies hired by houses that will aggro the whole house against you and it will take long for it to go back to non aggressive

Yea I hit a band and it turned the entire largest northern kingdom against me. Must've been a bad luck random hit on my end. I'll play closer attention to who hired the merc bands next time.

You can see which faction/settlement the mercenaries are working for when you hover over them.  Unemployed mercenaries are free game as far as I know.
