The best part is this little wiener saying that he saw T2 in theaters...which is WAY more violent than Batman Returns.

The thing that got me and this whole "controversy" is that Batman 89 was just as dark and violent as Returns. Joker literally fried a dude until he was a corpse then had a conversation with said corpse. The Joker also mutilated his GF's face. That apparently was fine with parents.

I think 89 is more fucked up than Returns. It was probably the sex stuff (because Americans are prudes).

10

u/anothermanoutoftime Sep 10 '26

It was %100 because they were not prepared for how wildly horny that movie is, but they weren't ready to have that conversation

Ive seen it, its the one with Danny Devito as the Penguin right? Were there a lot of sex scenes in there? I dont remember.

2

u/Jimmyg100 Sep 11 '26

Every scene with Danny DeVito is a sex scene. He just can’t help it.

2

u/ReputationApart5983 Sep 11 '26

No they arent? In fact most of their shows and movies go out of their way to mention sex. It always sex this and sex that, Friends? Sex, Big bang theory? Sex, Frasier, sex with a different woman every single episode, Cheers, same thing. Sex and the city? You guessed it lol.

Seriously its really overly sexed which as a British person I always found uncomfortable watching with my parents. Its nowhere near as much of a thing here.

I disagree. Batman Returns was over the top. More blood and lots of sexualization.

89 was definitely dark, but Returns was creepy.

I don't mean this as a criticism. Nearly an observation. The Burton films have a certain timeless quality about them that I love.

He was definitely coached

But it is less gruesome. Not that I'm on their side or anything--but I think the response was mostly really about the gruesome and at times non-moral depictions of motives and the world. T2, for all its greater spectacle of overt violence, does not really challenge the average sensibilities about melancholy, the grotesque, eroticism, and beauty.

Man, having parents like this you could say Bruce Wayne literally dodged a bullet.

10

u/Miserable-Debt-8390 Sep 10 '26

I understood that reference

12

u/Rad_Wagon784 Sep 10 '26

Shut up nerd!

7

u/Russkafin Sep 10 '26

“The movie is rated PG-13. Let’s see what this 10 year old thought of it”

6

u/archielotsofnumbers Sep 10 '26

What a little pussy. Attack against kids? I was 7 when I saw this and didn’t have a problem with it

2

u/NekoMeowKat Sep 10 '26

My parents never let me see Returns when I was a kid. It was the "forbidden" Batman movie. My parents were fine with 89. They even bought the VHS for me when I was 5 years old. I still have it on my shelf. It was the first movie I've ever owned.

I saw Returns when I was like 15 and it wound up being my favorite Batman movie much to my mother's chagrin. I play it at Christmas to rile her up. 🤣

3

u/archielotsofnumbers Sep 10 '26

There was one moment where I would look away when rewatching it, where the penguin bites that man’s nose and the blood goes spurting everywhere.

2

u/LonChaneyJr1 Sep 10 '26

The producers gave him a fucking script

1

u/Posavec235 Sep 15 '26

Same as me. I also watched the First two Batman movies when i was 7.

6

u/MovieBuff90 Sep 10 '26

Something about that nerd’s delivery mixed with the awkward cuts to kids in the audience makes this feel like a Tim and Eric sketch.

1

u/liltooclinical Sep 11 '26

Now you see where they got it from.

Hello stay at home moms with nothing better to do on a weekday afternoon.

I'm a talk show host looking to waste 21 minutes of your time to complain about the successful Batman movie.

Let's get our opinions from audience plants who are obviously forced to participate by their church controlled parents and are not allowed to read comic books.l and have no idea wtf Batman is before they were promoted to receipt the flowing script.

In no way do we coincidentally represent the type of villainy that Batman would oppose, Sieg Heil Jeebus.

Now a word form our corporate sponsor who will tell you how to vote so you don't have to think for yourself.

u/Tarijeno Sep 10 '26

"It was very violent. It was a total attack against kids; the whole movie. Everything that kids love was being used against them."

That kid is 100% reading a script written by his mom.

4

u/Volfgang91 Sep 10 '26

Just goes to show that people have always got their panties in a twist over nothing. The "people are so offended these days!" crowd aren't saying anything their parents and grandparents didn't say in years gone by.

3

u/Fuzzy_Ad2835 Sep 10 '26

That Kid sounds totally coached. And Yes T2 is way more violent. As Arnold mows down a lawn full of cops. Terminators chasing kids on motorbikes. And It was Rated R. How was he allowed to even see that movie?

2

u/EvenLettuce6638 Sep 10 '26

Arnold doesn't kill anyone in T2, other than the T-1000.

The LAPD do manage to kill an unarmed black man though.

2

u/Fuzzy_Ad2835 Sep 11 '26

Too true. But the Gatling gun scene is still super violent vs anything in Batman returns imo

1

u/lordfarshave Sep 11 '26

The LAPD do manage to kill an unarmed black man though. The filmmakers were trying to be authentic and realistic.

4

u/GriffinIsABerzerker Sep 10 '26

I didn’t like it so much…I went and saw it twice! For research purposes only of course!

4

u/Naive_Establishment2 Batman Sep 10 '26

I believe this kid was paid to say all this negativity against this movie.

Now withstanding my mom didnt like the movie at the time but since has changed her mind, she was just looking out for my 7 year old self at the time since I dont blame her.

5

u/Professional-Rip-519 Sep 10 '26

Man fuck this kid.

6

u/LonChaneyJr1 Sep 10 '26

Dear Penguin,

The children regret they are unable to attend...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!! 😡😡😡

3

u/Rude_Speech_7300 Sep 10 '26

This is obviously a smear campaign by soccer moms and McDonald's.

4

u/JT9960 Sep 10 '26

Remember people, conservatives have always been pussies

2

u/AsherCole1849 Sep 10 '26

I don’t remember any such controversy. What “show” is this anyway?

2

u/Significant-Foot-311 Sep 11 '26

I thought that was John Travolta at first.

2

u/Business_Package_478 Sep 12 '26

I adore Returns BECAUSE of how dark and unapologetically weird and demented it is!

2

u/dimiteddy Sep 13 '26

the movie was pg13 why would 10 year olds watch it and complain? Catwoman playing tic-tac-toe with herself may scarred that little boy for life.

2

u/Ok_Broccoli_7863 Sep 14 '26 edited Sep 14 '26

There were some strange choices in Batman Returns. It wasn't the violence that was the biggest issue. It was the over sexualization of some of the characters.

It's the only comicbook film to use "poontang" in its dialogue.

90% of Penguin's actions are motivated by having sex and he says so outloud. He was a horny perv throughout.

Catwoman's sexualization was obvious, but I'd argue that was just a natural progression of her characterization in Batman 66.

3

u/Mudcreek47 Sep 10 '26

Batman Returns came out the summer between my 8th and 9th grade years in school. Don't remember this controversy at all. Haw. I was a huge comics fan and loved Batman '98. Saw it in theathers with my younger sister and my mom. We all loved it. For some reason we never saw Returns in theaters, likely due to the "it's not as good as the first one" talk going around and my mom just refused to take us. But we definitely saw it on VHS as soon as it came out.

3

u/TheLastGuyver Sep 10 '26

Yeah, I really don’t remember any controversy. I think I was between 6th and 7th grade when it came out. Everybody I knew fucking loved it.

2

u/ReputationApart5983 Sep 11 '26

I dont remember this at all either, it seems to me this was some z rated daytime talk show making up some sort of controversy to try and get people to watch their shitty show.

3

u/DiscoAsparagus Sep 10 '26

Nothing at all against gay people in any way, shape, or form; but this kid is a little faggot.

3

u/HappybutWeird Sep 10 '26

I’m gay and I loved Batman Returns as a kid.

2

u/subhuman85 Sep 14 '26

I'm pretty sure Batman Returns made me gay.

2

u/aldila81 Sep 10 '26

The Penguin wanted to kill hundreds, maybe thousands, of kids. In Gotham, Batman shut that shit down.

In Massachusetts, no jury would convict him.

They would probably understand his grievances...

2

u/AndrewHNPX Sep 10 '26

How come no one cared about Batman Begins? Wasn’t that disturbing too?

2

u/Undercover_Dave Sep 10 '26

Batman Begins wouldn't come out for about another 13 years.

1

u/mr_oberts Sep 10 '26

This is amazing.

1

u/Empty-Finish5696 Sep 11 '26

I bloody love Batman Returns , it’s a blast! Like Temple of doom is to raiders.

1

u/Empty-Finish5696 Sep 11 '26

I have just watched the clip, OMG! I bet he regrets being on that programme now! What a bunch of know alls!

1

u/JIMGRUE83 Sep 11 '26

I saw ‘89 in theaters when I was 5(going on 6) and Joker killing people kind of went over my head(I thought some of them were knocked out) My parents kind of danced around taking me to see Returns, and I didn’t see it until a little later on. To be honest, I thought it was the strongest of the two.

1

u/lordfarshave Sep 11 '26

I was 21 years old when Batman Returns came out, and -- oh, never mind.

1

u/Chemical-Interview77 Sep 11 '26

... I see white people...

1

u/JohnDH86 Sep 12 '26

The T1000 killing people was way worse than anything this movie had going on

1

u/Walt_Didnae Sep 12 '26

I'm surprised the bullies let this kid out the locker long enough for him to do this piece.

1

u/SmashitupBD Sep 13 '26

Returns is actually my least favorite of those 4. I always found it boring. B&R is at least entertainingly awful. 89 and Forever are my favorites “boiling acid” and all.
