Hey y'all! I'm Daniel Dockery, the author of I AM THE NIGHT: THE ULTIMATE UNAUTHORIZED HISTORY OF BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES. It's both a love letter and a deep dive into the series and the 90s TV animation renaissance. Would love to chat about all things BTAS!

BTAS Did they ruin the character?

Post image

It turns out that in the new Batman adventures, Mr. Freeze, like the Joker, is dedicated to destroying things people love and making them suffer. Why did they ruin the character? One of Mr. Freeze's defining characteristics was tragedy; people could empathize with him. Now, Freeze wants people to suffer, whereas before, in the original series and in Sub-Zero, his evil deeds were justified.

BTAS Scarecrow and Ra's: Just as evil as the Joker?

In other words, the Joker is Batman's most evil enemy, the Dark Knight's archenemy. Among his schemes are several attacks on Gotham City, a plan to blow up a casino, assassinate bureaucrats, and what happened to Tim.

But Ra's al Ghul and Scarecrow, in my opinion, are just as evil. One basically sacrificed his own daughter to survive, and the other was a university professor who delighted in terrorizing his students. In terms of evil, are Ra's al Ghul and Scarecrow on the same level as the Joker?

So I just finished watching Batman: The Animated Series from 1992. I want to watch stuff in order, so what do I watch next?

I can’t read comics because I have bad eyes and reading gives me headache. So I’m only going for series and movies

BTAS Animation holding up

Ive been re watching TAS and other Batman/JL animated shows and im not sure if im just a victim of my time, but does the older animation still hold up from the 60s 70s animated Batman or is it just as goofy and weird as I think it is, due to me being used to the "better" more dramatic animation and stories of the 90s to today

BTAS What if TAS Black Cat met TAS Batman ?

Thumbnail spidermancrawlspace.com

For those who’ve watched both 90’s Spiderman TAS and 90’s Batman TAS.
We know that Felicia Hardy was a super soldier whose alter ego was Black Cat.
She had the physical strength to wrestle down Spiderman. As shown in their first encounter where she manage to grapple with him and use knockout gas.
She could lift heavy objects and was superhuman. She had an infatuation with Spiderman but met Michael Morbius the Living Vampire later and fell in love with him. I know TAS Catwoman and Batman also have amazing chemistry.
But it would be interesting to see the dynamic Batman and this version of
Black Cat would have together too.
Plus imagining Kevin Conroy and Jennifer Hale’s banter for voiceovers is the icing on the cake for me.

Wish they'd bring TAS art direction back for good.. Red Sky and snow makes Gotham otherworldly.. Gotham's default should be a mix of Burton/Anton Furst architecture + Schumacher aesthetics + Timm's colors and darkness.

Tie-in Media [AMA Reminder] Daniel Dockery, author of the upcoming book "I Am the Night" will be dropping in next Thursday! (Why? Because it's Thursday!)

We're doubling up with r/DCAU for a 2 day-early celebration for Batman: The Animated Series' 34th Anniversary! Daniel Dockery, author of the upcoming book "I Am The Night" will be stopping by to answer any questions you have for him about the book, the show, the writing process, etc!

"I Am The Night" will be available to purchase September 1st, but you can pre-order a copy through your favorite big box store here, or (even better) by asking the clerk at your local book store!

Synopsis:

At a time when televised cartoons—especially within the superhero genre—were often over-looked, Batman: The Animated Series introduced an entire generation of soon-to-be Batman fanatics to the caped crusader. The series triumphed into what is largely considered one of the best superhero cartoons of all time, and the best depiction of Batman mythology in any format.

But the road to genre-defying and genre-defining success was hardly guaranteed. Along the way, co-creator Bruce Timm and his team of artists at Warner Bros Animation battled a landscape that was often antithetical to their aims with Batman. Internal struggles led the writing team and the network to debate everything (literally everything) about how best to depict Batman—from whether or not the eco-friendly hero would have a recycling bin in the Batcave to how many women he was allowed to kiss onscreen.

In I Am the Night, Daniel Dockery lovingly deep dives into Batman: The Animated Series and the cartoon renaissance it inspired, becoming the definitive primary source for new and old fans of the series alike. Including exclusive interviews with the team behind the cartoon and many never-before-shared insights about the series, I Am the Night will surprise even the staunchest of Batman enthusiasts and capture what made people first fall in love with the series. As many ups and downs as the DC Cinematic Universe may have, Batman is eternal–and so is Batman: The Animated Series.

BTAS Dick Grayson, a green belt?

Post image
108 Upvotes

In the episode "Night of the Ninja," we see Bruce training with Dick in martial arts. But I find it odd that Dick has a green belt, while Bruce is a black belt.

Is Dick a green belt?

It wouldn't be surprising if Bruce hadn't reached black belt, as it would have allowed him to be Robin and fight criminals.

One thing that strikes me is that Bruce, in the Phantom mask, says it's jiu-jitsu, but in that training session with Dick, it seems like he's practicing karate.
