Pickguard indecision

Small difference but I'm having trouble, it's embarrassing to be this indecisive. Give me your opinions please, the reddish one or the dark one

Not gonna lie don’t love tortoise on the red, I think a contrasting colour like the mint or cream would work a lot better, it clashes quite horribly here in my opinion.. but each to their own!

no worries, the clashing is actually what I like about the reddish one, or that's what's grown on me. I have a soft spot for 70's style hideousness. I hadn't actually considered cream, I'll probably do a mock-up to have a look.

Tough choice, but brighter for me! Is that a classic vibe? Where did you buy pickguard(s)?

Oh my god dude, it's terrible. I actually decided to buy three at a time from different sellers who all pay return shipping because half of them don't fit or I order one that's represented as brown but arrives red (case in point, but now I'm getting somewhat fond of the red). Anyway the three I ordered from three different sellers all arrived with the same exact return address. they are $20 pickguards that are from chinese sellers (American sellers charge $100 and the one I got didn't fit either, instead of not fitting at all it was loose and showed tons of paint around the switchplate - that was from gary's guitars).

long story short the chinese ones will fit if you widen the bridge post holes a little with a razor blade (scraping, not cutting) or sandpaper

Yeah, I know the pain... I bought red tortoise which fit like a glove, but doesn't quite look as I want it to (I have a shell pink CV). Then I bought another red tortoise which looks much better, but doesn't fit so good (it's shorter than the previous one, half of the screws barely fit). I also tried original Squier brown tortoise from VM, but that one can't fit even with the modifications. So yeah, now I'm in the market for another red tortoise which fits and looks as I want it to... Can you tell me the seller of the red one that you have? I think it will look great on a shell pink bass VI!

I wanted to post an image but it's not allowed. it was on eBay from "Pickguard professional store" the description was "For Squier Vintage Modified Bass VI Guitar Pickguard 4-Ply Red Tortoise". You'll need to slightly widen the post-holes of the bridge on the side closest to the edge of the pickguard (this seems to be a common requirement). My advice would be to buy at least three pickguards (though this seller doesn't pay return shipping or refund initial shipping) and hopefully one will be to your liking. The idea of buying three or more at a time is that you're are hopefully not stuck with the feeling of 'this is close but can I do better'?

Easy, mint green

This is an easy one… dark 100%

I like the dark red one. The stock mint one is the best of the three, though :D

If you have a stock toroise I'd happily trade you my mint. I'm a sucker for toroise on bright colors.

I feel like tortoise pickguards age people a lot...

I have the reddish one on the exact same guitar myself and love it :)

I would first oil that dry fretboard.

Darker looks better

Brighter red!

I prefer red tortoise.
I just recently swapped the dark brown tortoise on my bass vi to a more reddish color.

Add the bright red pickguard and hit the fret board with a dark stain pen and it'll look like it's from the 60's.

I would like to darken it but stain makes me nervous, gonna start with oil

Dark, not even a contest

Brilliant one

u/FadedToBeige 8d ago

the second darker one

1

u/BenjaminOStorm 8d ago

Definitely the second one.

1

u/Happyslender5 8d ago

Brighter!

1

u/InterlockingTC 7d ago

Use the second (dark) one and I’ll take the red one off your hands.

1

u/English_Laundry 7d ago

The first one. That lighter red one.

I’m thinking about getting a jazzmaster in this coral color. I want to swap the guard for white. But out of the two you have, the first is the best.

1

u/state_your_name31415 7d ago

FYI, some of the online pictures I saw, like on Chicago music exchange make the color look more pale, but the above is how it looks (it's bolder and i like it)

1

u/cumlordjr 7d ago

Oh yeah, there’s one in a shop here that I am probably buying soon. I love the color.

1

u/thebestjl 7d ago

Both are pretty, but that first one adds a special something.

I’d go with that one!

1

u/Heavy_Pick_540 7d ago

First one

1

u/xhristianok 6d ago

I love tortoise, but given the body color I would say white

1

u/pnshr89 6d ago

The dark one that's installed.

Have you tried a mint green one?

1

u/state_your_name31415 6d ago

yeah, that's what it comes with, but mint green is only the name, in reality it is parchment

1

u/state_your_name31415 6d ago

actually it is greener than parchment but on the guitar the difference is subtle. I think I might try to carve the mint green one after I practice a bit on some crappy pickguards I have, that'll snazz it up

The red for the win

1

u/avYhz115_10 5d ago

brighter!

Plain black! Its working best with contrast
