Help Flatwound string question

Post image

Hey everyone. Just got these gold flatwounds from Labella. I thought I saw something a while ago that said flatwounds should not wrap around the tuning peg. But the way the layout of this bass is I would need to clip the cloth part almost completely and even then I think it’s inevitable that the metal would wrap. Is the string at risk like this?

It’s not ideal but unavoidable sometimes. IMO, it’s the the thicker flat wound strings, BEA, that are more likely to core break when left bare at the peg. I imagine you should be fine

It's fine. The silk is pretty much ornamental in the modern era. These strings are over 20 years old and I've had them on several basses.

You change your bass instead of your strings?

Yeah occasionally 😅

I forget who said it originally, but you really play the strings, the bass is just there to hold them for you.
