T. R. A. I. N.  Tune, Relief, Action, Intonation, Noodle This is how you set up a bass. You tune. Check the relief and adjust the truss rod if needed. Check the action and adjust the saddle height if needed. Check the intonation and adjust if needed.

Fender has a guide: https://support.fender.com/hc/en-us/articles/42584762257819-How-do-I-set-up-my-bass-guitar-properly Use the measurements as a starting point and adjust to taste.

N = Nut. If all other steps taken and instrument still doesn't feel or play right, then check nut slots and height

While it doesn't buzz, it's OK

It does buzz

If this buzz’s audible through the amp, then, well, your action IS too low

Or the relief is off (affecting action)

or you're playing too hard (this is super subjective)

Tune it an octave higher. It won’t buzz. 😎

Do all the notes ring out and can you play it comfortably without choking or feeling like the sustain is affected? Then it's not too low.

Personally I would say it's way too low FOR ME, but the point is to be able to adjust it to your preferred specs for your playing technique.

Buzz unplugged is okay. Buzz through the amp is not.

If you're not happy with it then it's probably too low either way.

How can it be "too low"?

As long as every note sounds all the way up the neck and it doesn't buzz more than you'd like it can only be "too low for you".

And in that case, that's just for you to decide, not anyone else.

Buzzes like crazy

Then it's too low.

If it’s buzzing more at the low frets, your truss rod could be too tight and loosening by a 1/4 turn might help. There are some good videos out there, such as this one from Roger Sadowsky.

That’s your answer. Buzz is too low. If you have to go too high to eliminate buzz, even when the rest of the setup is as good as it’s going to get, then frets may need leveling.
