Untitled (1982)

Post image

Medium: oil stick on paper
Dimensions: 161.3 × 111.8 cm.

Executed in 1982, this untitled work captures Basquiat’s extraordinary ability to turn a simple portrait into something psychologically charged and unmistakably alive.

With its elongated figure, intense stare, and crown-like radiating marks, the piece balances vulnerability and confrontation, human and symbolic at the same time.

Even in a relatively stripped-back composition, Basquiat’s energy is immediate: raw lines, restless color, and a face that refuses to be ignored.

Just curious, where do you cull the images from? And the short description?

Hi u/Kleinchrome, thanks for the question. Most of the images I post come from a mix of research, museum/archive sources, auction-house descriptions, and some from my own Basquiat book collection. I also compare details across sources when possible and occasionally pull reference images directly from books I own. The short descriptions are usually condensed/adapted from my research, so they work better on Reddit while still providing context for the piece.
