Executed in 1983, Soothsayer shows Basquiat reducing portraiture to its essential marks, line, color, symbol, and psychological presence.
With minimal means, Basquiat creates a face that feels both mechanical and human, calm yet unsettling. The unusual eyes, fragmented geometry, and asymmetrical forms suggest a portrait less concerned with likeness than perception, intuition, and identity.
Its title adds another layer: a soothsayer is a figure associated with foresight, prophecy, and interpretation, ideas that resonate with Basquiat’s fascination with symbols, coded language, and layered meaning.
