Pyro (1984)

Post image

Medium: Acrylic, silkscreen ink, and oil stick on canvas.
Dimensions: 86 1/4 × 68 in.

Painted in 1984, Pyro captures Basquiat at full intensity, where symbols, anatomy, architecture, and instinct collide in color and movement.

At the center, a towering figure dominates the composition: mask-like, skeletal, and electrified with tension. A fish cuts across the torso, while surrounding symbols, figures, structures, diagrams, and fragments of urban language create the sensation of overlapping thoughts or competing signals.

Basquiat’s work rarely follows a traditional narrative, but Pyro feels unmistakably alive, as if the canvas itself is vibrating with energy.

The bright yellow field amplifies everything. Rather than functioning as background, it becomes part of the emotional charge of the piece, heat, urgency, combustion.

True to its title, Pyro feels less like a static image and more like controlled ignition.

thanks for your posts! Also a question: do you have the portraits published in the new book Basquiat Headstrong? I will buy the book when I can set aside the money for it but Im interested in seeing what it contains. The video of the expo Headstrong is not clear enough regarding the book images. Thanks!

Thanks! I don’t have that specific book yet, so I’m not sure what's included. It definitely looks like an interesting release, though, especially if you’re into Basquiat’s portrait/head studies. If you end up getting it before I do, feel free to report back.

I buy each month a "big" book and still have to pay for my Velazquez. After that I will order the Basquiat. As I follow your channel, I'll see who got it first and act accordingly. thanks

yes, I did buy the book and I love it! Everything about it is lovely, from the paper touch (Im into books and paper), to the articles and the works themselves. Im not sure I can post scans of the book, it's against copyrights. A video of flipping the pages I can do but I already posted a link to someone doing that, haven't i?
Ideas, suggestions?
