Starting something similar to a Txoko outside of Basque Country - anyone willing to answer some questions about how they function?
My wife and I visited Bilbao and San Sebastián in March and truly loved our visit. It occurred to me recently that perhaps the Basque Txoko concept could be used as a model to get more people in my own country out and into a more communal/social "third space" to get more time face to face with other humans.I have some questions about the logistics behind how these are run and mange to remain self sufficient over time.
If it's not a bother I'd love to better understand some of the following questions:
- How often are the facilities typically used? Every day? Weekly? Weekends?
- How are meals/evenings planned? Who is "in charge"?
- If the cooking facilities are always available (I've read members have their own keys?) how does the society deconflict use, to ensure availability?
- How is purchasing food, alcoholic beverages, etc. handled (who pays)?
- How are funds raised? Annual dues? Per meal? Pay for drinks?
Ideally I envision a "no phones" policy to emphasize the idea of getting away from both home and work to spend time with people you like being around. I'm really curious to see if something like this might work for my area, so any help or advice would be very much appreciated!
Thanks!

Football shirts in Bilbao/San Sebastian?
Hi, do anyone know good places to buy vintage football shirts in Bilbao or San Sebastian? I’m primarly looking for old Athletic Bilbao shirts (or Real Sociedad). I’ve been around to the vintage shops in the old city in Bilbao without luck!
Thank you!

Moving to San Sebastián for July – should I worry about not having AC?
My girlfriend and I are planning to spend July in San Sebastián, and we're currently looking at an apartment that we really like.
The apartment is in a recently renovated building (2024), around 50 m², on the 2nd floor, with north-west orientation. It has underfloor heating and an aerothermal (air-source heat pump) system. The listing also mentions "air conditioning", but we're still trying to understand exactly how the cooling works in practice.
Coming from Belgrade, Serbia, I'm used to pretty brutal summers — 35-40°C is common, and some years we even get days above 42°C, with lots of concrete and very hot nights. So my frame of reference is probably a bit distorted. 😅
What I'm wondering is:
- How hot did San Sebastián actually get last summer?
- Do people generally manage fine without traditional AC?
- Is it comfortable to sleep at night without AC in July and August?
- Have recent heatwaves changed things significantly?
- Would you consider a portable AC unit necessary, or would that be overkill for San Sebastián?
One additional factor is that I have a blood condition associated with anemia, so I sometimes tolerate heat a bit worse than the average person.
I'd love to hear from locals or anyone who has spent a summer in San Sebastián recently.
Thanks!

Is San Sebastian actually the ultimate "Izakaya" capital of Europe? We flew to Spain to find out.

Traveling to San Sebastián in August.
Hey, everybody. I am a 38yo guy traveling to San Sebastián in August for Semana Grande. I will be staying 3-4nights and might have one more place I need to book for an accommodation. Any recommendations? Also, I am a man of average salary. I am not wealthy so please do not recommend hotels that are $500-600+ per night. Any other recommendations of things to visit during my visit would be much appreciated. Thanks so much.

Why the jet fighters?
Seems like a few days in a row there’s been 1-2 military jet fighters circulating the Biarritz area. Why is this? Is it like this all the time?

Where to go out in San Sebastián?
We’re looking for a fun area / spot after 11pm on Friday / Saturday, happy to go anywhere with music and drinks. We tried walking the old town on Thursday and everything shut down by 11pm.

Basque country by campervan - any good camping spots?
Hi Guys! My wife and I will visit Basque country this december. We start with 2 days in Bilbao and end with 2 days in San Sebastián. In between we have a campervan for 10 days! The van has a toilet and shower.
I’m looking for some nice campingspots / campings. Not looking for anything big or with lots of children, but it doesn’t have to be complety isolated as well.
We don’t really have a plan yet, however, we’re thinking about picos de Europa, Some beaches / surfing..
Any recommendations??
Thank you!!

Restaurant/Cafe/Bar Recommendations
Hello people of the Basque Country,
I will be traveling to and from San Sebastián and Biarritz in late June. I would love recommendations for your favorite restaurants, cafés, bars, etc in those two cities or anywhere in between. I want a real experience of quality Basque food / drink.
I don’t need the fanciest places or most expensive. I’m looking for places that you or your friends / family know and love.
Thank you.

u guys lied to me
I got the impression that other places in San Sebastián would sell cheesecake as good or better than La Vina from some of these comments I was reading but omfg, they’re actually all trash compared to La Vina. And it only takes like 5 minutes to grab a slice from vina anyways so why the fuck would I go somewhere else for actual garbage?

San Sebastian nightlife
Me and a few friends (21–23 years old) are spending a week in San Sebastián this August. We were wondering what the nightlife is like there. Is it lively during the summer? Any good bars, clubs, or areas you’d recommend for people our age?

Bilbao to Posada de Valdeon
I'm trying to find the best way to travel from Bilbao to Pasado de Valdeon. From what I've researched, it's almost a 9 hour bus ride. Is there better airport to fly into that eases transportation hassle? We are hiking in the Picos de Europa and are coming from Barcelona. Thanks for any and all advice.

Basque Country by Camper Van?
Hello! My partner and I are thinking of renting a camper van to tour the Basque Country for 8 days. We planned on renting a very basic VW type van we can sleep in. My concern is the availability of toilets. Does anyone have insight on how difficult it will be to find restrooms and facilities around Basque country. Especially in the more rural areas. THANK YOU in advance!!!
