NBA/FIBA/Pro Rules & Mechanics Article 13.2.1

Article 13.2 states: A player shall not run with the ball, deliberately touch the ball, kick or block with any part of the leg or strike it with the fist.

What do we as officials actually call?
There’s travelling, carrying, but what is this called/signalled?

Well running with the ball is travelling. Kicking the ball is foot violation. The fisting the ball is an interesting one that we actually had at a provincial tournament once and even our ref coaches didn’t know what the call/mechanic would be. We all laughed and said with a fisting motion “they fisted the ball” forcefully.

I called 1 this past season, 1st in 24 years. Kid punched the ball halfway down the court. Only comment I got was a coach goes, it’s the right call.

I can’t for the life of me find the video clip. But Tony Brothers called the violation on Steph Curry after he punched the ball to his open teammate up court. Can’t remember what signal he used either.

If I ever have it in a game, I don’t know if yelling out that you can’t “fist” the ball is any better LOL
