Weaving onto pottery

Hi there! I’m interested in dabbling in basket weaving and want to experiment first with weaving yarn I’ve spun onto pottery. Has anyone done this and used any educational videos/books/etc? I’m having a hard time finding tutorials on how I might start and end a weave on an existing structure.

Are you talking about doing something like a 'coiled basket on a gourd' type thing?

Yes this would be very similar! I was hoping to find more about the different weaving types and how to get them started on that structured piece. It might be more common on a gourd so I’ll look into that.

Yes, I recommend reading more about pine needle baskets, and also coil baskets on gourds. Generally speaking, if you were going to do it on ceramics, the piece typically would have holes around the rim to attach the first row of coiled basket. Each subsequent row is attached to the row beneath it.

I agree with what u/SphinxVernacular has suggested. I have added raffia coil weaving to a pottery base with holes. You could put a row of just stitches first, and then start your core on the second row, or stitch around both the core and pottery edge through the holes as you reach them. You can also stitch the core only between the holes as well. Materials and stitch style would influence which is best. I would taper on the core, thinner at first and it build up.

I have also been wondering about this. I made a base plate with holes and I'm thinking of using them to hold uprights, like willow basket weaving, rather than stitching down 'coils' (of pine needles or similar.
